chocolate! But what is it and where does it come from?

We all love

Chocolate comes from cocoa beans, which started growing on trees in Central America about 100 million years ago. Cocoa trees can only live in hot, rainy places near the Equator. The trees have large orange fruit, about the size of small pumpkins. Inside the fruit are many small beans, like peas inside a peapod. The raw beans are really good for you, full of vitamin C and magnesium, but they’re bitter. They also have a fair amount of caffeine in them, like coffee or tea. People started eating cocoa beans about 17,000 years ago.

Around 4000 years ago, people in Central America (modern Mexico) were grinding up the beans and making them into a chocolate drink with vanilla or chilli in it, or a sort of spicy porridge with corn and chillies in it. Sometimes people sweetened chocolate with honey. Our word chocolate probably comes from the Aztec phrase “cacaua atl” which means “cacao drink”.

During his conquest of Mexico about 500 years ago, the Spanish explorer Cortez noticed that the Aztec Indians used cocoa beans to make the royal drink called “chocolatl”, meaning warm liquid. The Emperor Montezuma, who drank 50 or more cups every day, served the drink to Cortez in golden goblets, treating it like a food for the gods.

Montezuma’s chocolatl was very bitter though, and the Spanish did not like it very much. To make the drink nicer Cortez sweetened it with cane sugar.

In 1528 Cortez arrived back in Spain where he presented the Spainish King, Charles V with cocoa beans as a gift. Cortez also taught him how to make the Aztec chocolate drink, Chocolatl.

About 400 years ago Chocolatl started to spread around Europe but eating hard chocolate only became popular in 1847, when an English chocolate firm, Fry and Sons began to produce sweet, hard chocolate for eating from ground cacao beans, mixed with the addition of cacao butter and sugar.

In 1875, a Swiss chocolate maker developed a hard milk chocolate, using fresh milk. Since then various chocolate factories around the world have developed different kinds of chocolate – sweet, semi-sweet, bittersweet, with milk, without milk, with nuts, without nuts, endless kinds of chocolate to satisfy every taste.

So, now you know!

The mini-world water cycle The science bit: The water cycle is demonstrated in a box by the ‘Sun’ causing warming of the ‘sea’. This causes increased evaporation of water particles (molecules) from the liquid water surface into the air as water vapour. As the air absorbs more water vapour it becomes humid. Eventually the water condenses from the humid air onto the cooler parts of the box. The freezer pack speeds up this condensation, which begins as droplets, growing into drops. When the drops become large enough, they fall as ‘rain’. Get creative: Brighten up the mini-world by standing the box on blue paper to make the ‘sea’ blue, adding a Plasticine™ sunbather with a sun shade to the sandy ‘beach’, and cotton wool to the freezer pack to make it look like fluffy clouds. Weather questions this experiment helps you answer:• Why is there more rain in most tropical areas than in cooler

areas? (more solar energy, greater evaporation)• Why is there more evaporation from the sea than from the

land? (greater surface area of water)• How can water evaporated over the sea cause it to rain on

the land? (humid water from over the sea is moved across the land by air currents i.e. wind)

• How does water rained on the land return to the sea? (by flowing downhill in rivers and by flowing underground through soil and rock)

• Does it only rain on the land or can it rain on the sea as well? (it rains on both)

• Which parts of the water cycle can be seen in Nelson/Tasman? (all of them)

A demonstration water cycle in a transparent box, using materials readily available at home.Time needed to complete activity: 15 minsThis neat little project will help you learn how warming water increases evaporation, how cooling humid air causes condensation, and how these things make clouds and rain. What you’ll need:A desk lamp/reading lightA clear box (a sandwich box) Frozen freezer packSome sandSome water

Make a sandy ‘beach’ in the box and add the shallow ‘sea’. Switch on the lamp (‘Sun’) and wait for a few minutes for the water to become warm (or ‘cheat’ by adding warm water from the kettle). Add the freezer pack to cause the effect of cooling air which will form ‘clouds’. After a time, the water droplets that condense on the underside of the box lid beneath the cool ‘clouds’ grow, and fall to the beach as ‘rain’.

1. The name ‘Viking’ means ‘a pirate raid’.

2. The Vikings were famous for sailing huge distances from their home in Scandinavia but they were also traders.

3. When important Vikings died, they would be placed in a burial ship with all their clothes, jewellery, and even their animals. This would either be buried in the ground or set alight and pushed out to sea.

4. The Vikings believed in many gods including Thor, the god of thunder, and Loki, who could shape-shift to become any kind of animal he wanted. Pretty cool!

5. Christopher Columbus ‘discovered’ the American continent, but the Vikings got there 500 years before him landing in what is now Canada in around AD 1000.

The Blobfish

The blobfish (Psychrolutes marcidus) is a fish that inhabits the deep waters off the coasts of Australia and Tasmania. Due to the inaccessibility of its habitat, it is rarely seen by humans.

Blobfish are found at depths where the pressure is several dozens of times higher than at sea level. To remain buoyant, the flesh of the blobfish is primarily a gelatinous mass with a density slightly less than water; this allows the fish to float above the sea floor without expending energy on swimming. The relative lack of muscle is not a disadvantage as it primarily swallows edible matter that floats by in front it.

The Aye-aye

The Aye-aye (Daubentonia madagascariensis) is a strepsirrhine native to Madagascar that combines rodent-like teeth with a long, thin middle finger to fill the same ecological niche as a woodpecker. It is the world’s largest nocturnal primate, and is characterized by its unique method of finding food; it taps on trees to find grubs, then gnaws holes in the wood and inserts its elongated middle finger to pull the grubs out!

The Dumbo Octopus

The octopuses of the genus Grimpoteuthis are sometimes nicknamed “Dumbo octopuses” from the ear-like fins protruding from the top of their “heads” (actually bodies), resembling the ears of Walt Disney’s flying elephant. They are benthic creatures, living at extreme depths, and are some of the rarest of the Octopoda species.

Recipe Corner A kiwi classic to keep you going through the holidays…

Anzac BiscuitsSoldier’s wives used to bake the

se biscuits

and send them to soldiers serving overseas

in World War 1, because the ingredients

don’t spoil easily and the biscuits kept well

while being transported. So they should last

you the whole holidays!

Ingredients

• 1 cup flour

• 1 cup caster sugar

• 1 cup desiccated coconut

• 2 cups rolled oats

• 125g butter

• 2 tbsp golden syrup

• 1 tsp baking soda

• 3 tbsp boiling water

Method

1. Heat oven to 180C (160C fan bake). Line

two baking trays with nonstick baking paper.

Place flour, caster sugar, coconut and

oats in a bowl and stir to combine. Make

a well in the centre.

2. Place butter and golden syrup in a

saucepan to melt, or microwave in a

bowl to melt. Dissolve baking soda in

boiling water. Add melted ingredients and

dissolved baking soda to dry ingredients

and mix to combine.

3. Roll spoonfuls into balls and press onto

prepared baking trays, allowing space for

biscuits to spread while cooking.

4. Bake for 15 minutes or until firm and
