Tools/Strategies ● Be brief but to the point - Encourage students to

prepare a very short and brief testimony that includes ○ How their sin separates them from God that

they can never on their own merit God’s love or grace

○ How they believe in Jesus, the perfect Son of God, who died for them, taking their sin and punishment.

○ How Jesus is the only one who saves them because of his sacrifice

○ How they are assured of salvation because of the promises of God in the Bible

● Be contextual - As they write their testimony, encourage the students to be thinking about their likely audience (kids in Mexico, or maybe at a church service) and be sure they are using simple words and language that will be relevant. Ideally, if students can even boil down a testimony to a short enough presentation to learn in Spanish, even better.

● Be relational – take time to establish friendships with the kids. Maybe students can be intentional to target one or a few kids and love on them with the intention of sharing a testimony with each one. Groups can maybe divide up the kids who they will focus on so that no one is missed.

● Follow up – students engage with the kids for a week, but the Church is there all the time. Do your best to connect the kids with the local church if they are not already plugged in.

Day 1: Sunday - Kick off and Outreach Event Lesson Focus: Love Verse of the day: 1 John 4:10 “This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” Verse of the day in Spanish: 1 Juan 4:10 “En esto consiste el amor: no en que nosotros hayamos amado a Dios, sino en que el perdón de nuestros pecados.” Intro: I want you to think about someone that you really love. This might be a parent, grandparent, brother, sister or a good friend. Do you love this person all the time or are there times that you don’t get along and fight? I can’t think of one person in my life that I love that I haven’t gotten mad at once. If someone hurts you (sinned against you) would it be easy to forgive them? What about a big hurt? I can’t love perfectly. God is Love: So why do we love? Why do we try to love people, even when we don’t always want to? Read 1 John 4: 7-12 The Bible tells us that we love because he first loved us. He loves us so much that he sent his one and only son Jesus to die for us so that we can have eternal life. I can’t love perfectly, but God does. Jesus Storybook Bible: Running Away - The story of the Prodigal Son pg. 272 Read the story then ask these questions

1. Why did the son run away? 2. Why do you think the Dad welcomed his son home after he ran away? 3. What does this story tell us about what God is like?

a. We are like the son and God is like the father. God cares for all sinners, all of us. b. God calls you his Son or Daughter c. All are loved by God

Jesus came for sinners and runaways like us. Mark 2:17 Jesus says that you are loved more than you know. God’s children could never run too far, or be too lost, for God to find them.

Day 2: Monday Lesson Focus: Joy and Peace Lesson Goal: By God’s grace we will see that true joy and peace come only through Jesus. Verse of the Day: Romans 15:13 “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Verse of the Day in Spanish: Romanos 15:13 “Que el Dios de la esperanza los llene de toda alegría y paz a ustedes que creen él, para que rebosen de esperanza por el poder del Espíritu Santo.” Intro: What kinds of things make you feel peaceful? What kinds of things bring you joy? What is Joy? In one way, you is the happiness you feel when something good happens. In a bigger sense of how the Bible talks about joy it is waiting and longing for the great things that God promises even if there is pain and suffering now. What is Peace? Peace is what happens when God makes us whole, complete and secure in Him. You have a calm and restful heart as you trust in Him. What kinds of things take away your feeling of peace or joy - or make you feel sad? Are we sometimes the cause of sadness and pain too? I am here to tell you that God made a plan to rescue us from these things so we could know true Joy and true Peace as he intended? Would you like to hear the story? Jesus Storybook Bible - “Operation ‘No More Tears’" After reading, ask these questions

1. What is God doing for his people in this story? 2. How can Jesus coming as the Rescuer bring us joy and peace? 3. In today’s verse, God is the “God of Hope.” How does hope in Jesus give us joy and peace? 4. What happens in the verse when we are filled we joy and peace? (answer: we overflow with hope

from the Holy Spirit - this hope can point others to joy and peace in Jesus too.) 5. How can believing and trusting in God’s rescue plan change the way you live?

Jesus came to rescue people from sin and the things that cause pain and suffering. Because of this we can have joy and peace as we trust in Him.

Day 3: Tuesday Lesson Focus: Patience and Self Control Lesson Goal: By God’s grace the hearers will come to know that though we fail to be patient and self-controlled, God is always patient and self-controlled with us. Verse of the Day: Psalm 103:8 (NIV) “The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.”

Verse of the day in Spanish: Salmo 103:8 (NVI)

El SEÑOR es clemente y compasivo, lento para la ira y grande en amor.

Introduction: “Ten Ways to be Perfect” from the Storybook Bible (summarize as needed) (Moses and the Ten Commandments, from Exodus 16–17, 19–40) Who in the story was not patient? What were some of the things that the Israelites (The group of people from the story) wanted? How was God patient with the Israelites and us? Patience: What is patience? Are we always patient? What does it look like to be patient? Why would God need to be patient with us or the people of Israel? How is God patient with you? Self-Controlled: What is self-control? What is an example of God showing self-control? Why is self-control hard for us? Outline: God’s is Patience and self-controlled

1. God is patient with the impatient a. The Iserialits were not patient to receive what they wanted. b. We are not patient to receive what we want.

2. God is self-controlled with those controlled by self. a. The Iserialits did not control themselves but did what felt good or easy. (Sin) b. We do what we want over what God wants. (Sin)

3. God is patient in giving us good things a. God lead Israel to the promised land at just the right time. b. God will take us to the promised land at just the right time.

Day 4: Wednesday Lesson Focus: Goodness & Faithfulness Verse of the Day - Psalm 100:5 “For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.” Verse of the Day in Spanish - Salmos 100:5 “Porque Jehová es bueno: para siempre es su misericordia, Y su verdad por todas las generaciones.” Intro: Can you think of someone in your life who is good? How about someone who is faithful? Goodness and faithfulness can be shown in many different ways. But we will see in Jesus, through the story today, that goodness and faithfulness come from a heart that knows God, and is obedient to God’s plan. God is Good Are we always good? God is good to all his children. Even when they don’t want to listen to him. God is Faithful What does it mean to be faithful? Someone who is faithful is your friend. Always. God showed us that he is good and faithful when he served his disciples, and when he died on the cross and rose again for us. Jesus Storybook Bible - “The Servant King" After reading, ask these questions How was Jesus being good and faithful in this story? Who was he showing his goodness and faithfulness to? Why did Jesus choose to be a servant? Jesus shows his goodness and faithfulness by being a servant. He was obedient to God the Father by doing what God asked. He gave us what we need.

Day 5: Thursday Lesson Focus: Gentleness and Kindness Lesson Goal: By God’s grace we will see that Jesus is kind and gentle with us even though we are not gentle and kind ourselves. Verse of the Day: Titus 3:4-5a – But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. Verse of the Day in Spanish: Tito 3:4-5a – Pero, cuando se manifestaron la bondad y el amor de Dios nuestro Salvador, él nos salvó, no por nuestras propias obras de justicia, sino por su misericordia. Intro: Ask if the kids have ever seen a mother cat cleaning her kittens. Have them describe how she is gentle and/or kind to her kittens. Then ask them: What does it mean to be gentle? You could let the children give a few responses if that seems appropriate. Then you can define it something like this: (note to teacher – ‘gentleness’ is also rendered ‘meekness.’) Gentleness in the Bible is similar to what we think of like mother cat cleaning her kittens, but it is also a picture of great power being controlled like the fact that the mother is strong and dangerous to an enemy who might try to harm her kittens. What does it mean to be kind? You could let the children give a few responses if that seems appropriate. Then you can define it something like this: Kindness in the Bible is a lot like what we think of – doing good things for others to help them. In the Bible kindness also includes the love that would make you want to do good to others and help them. Let’s hear a story about Jesus’s kindness and gentleness. Jesus Storybook Bible - “The Friend of Little Children" (Reading Note: One could consider rephrasing the end of the second paragraph by inserting ‘kindest or gentlest’ in place of “nicest” at the end of this paragraph. For example, “–That if they were the cleverest, nicest , kindest, gentlest or something, Jesus would like them best.”) After reading, ask these questions:

1. Were the disciples kind to each other or gentle with each other at the beginning? 2. Were they gentle and kind and to the children? 3. Are you always gentle and kind with people? 4. How did Jesus show kindness and gentleness in this story? 5. What can we learn from our verse for today about Jesus’s kindness? 6. How can trusting in God’s gentleness & kindness lead us to be more kind and gentle?

BEFORE WE GO Get Your Meds

SHOTS: We encourage a current Tetanus shot for every team member. The town streets are dirt, and you may even see sewage running out into yards or street. We are also aware of dogs or other animals that could cause problems if they were to bite you. Another option is a Hepatitis A shot.

ISSUES & MEDS: Traveler's Diarrhea is always of concern. Each year someone is affected, usually multiple people. So please take our precautions seriously. First line of defense is PREVENTION!!!! Select safe food and water (food thoroughly cooked, no salads or raw seafood, avoid milk, ice cream, yogurt and dairy products; drink bottled water, avoid ice cubes, use safe water to brush your teeth and take any medications) Please be sure to notify your leaders if you or one of your team are having difficulty. We are a long way from home and must take care of each other. Pepto-Bismol and an Anti-diarrheal medication (Imodium or Lomotil) should be part of every individuals personal medication supply. Antibiotics Sometimes antibiotic is needed. The three choices below are recommended to use. You can discuss this trip with your doctor.
