self-sponsored and self-produced, is the multi-concert annual event, “The Sounds of Christmas”. In this fifty-year span, DCCC has had four principal con- ductors: Dan Croci, Margaret Johnson, John Calo, and presently Crystal Hogan. Since the first ecumenical service, the Clergy Association has sponsored each Lenten concert. It will again on Holy Tuesday 2016. The association accepts an offering at the free services, and the proceeds are directed to charitable causes in the community. The Chorus will perform their 2016 concert as spring arrives, at 7:30 pm CDT, Tuesday, March 22. At the time of publication, it will perform at St. Mary and St. Joseph Church at the corner of A St. and Prospect Ave., Iron Mountain. ALERT: Because of construction and a possible mold problem at the church, the Chorus may instead perform at Kingsford High School’s auditorium on Hamilton Ave. (Check the local media, including www.communitychorus.org for updates.) As usual, soloists and small ensembles will sing and play music during a thirty-minute prelude. The traditional reception will follow the concert in the church basement or the high school cafeteria, depending on location. Associate Conductor Gail Vornkahl is the musical director and conductor for this year’s ecumenical service.

On Aug. 14, the season will continue with the Phil Lynch Quartet, a regional jazz ensemble; on Aug. 28, Dave Wickerham will again flaunt the faculties of the Mighty Moller theatre organ. The concert series will conclude on Sept. 11 with world-renowned pianist Frederick Moyer performing on the theatre’s revered Steinway D grand piano. A pre-season concert on Sunday, May 22 will welcome the Bill Hassey Orchestra, a six-piece ensemble from Eagle River, WI playing the “songs that never die”. Bringing Back the Braumart A New Life for Our Community Theater

that showcases all art forms, from film screenings to live theater, live music to dance, art shows, and children’s programming. It will collaborate with artists, schools, performance groups and cultural organizations. A vibrant arts center in the heart of a down- town district will help breathe new life into the area. The area will be a place to meet and greet, shop and eat, to be the heart of the community once again. Planned renovations will bring the theater to a clean, comfortable and inviting condition. A main floor barrier-free restroom will be added. The lobby will be completely remodeled. A much- needed new roof membrane will be installed. The building will be thoroughly cleaned. Existing heating and cooling systems will be brought back into service. Long-term plans include restoring the theater to its original glory. A wonderful group of volunteers is preparing to bring back its luster. The historic Braumart Theater is a treasured asset; the area deserves this ambitious restoration program. What we do today will speak volumes about who we are as a community and who we wish to be.

By John Estes, Vice President, Friends of the Braumart Excitement is in the air! The historic Braumart Theater in Iron Mountain is being brought back to life. The theater—originally opened in 1925—was purchased on February 11, 2016 by Friends of the Braumart. Renovations have begun. Imagine the spectacle at the opening of the theater 90 years ago. More than 2,000 people lined the streets trying to secure a seat in the 999 seat auditorium; all were dressed in their best, excited to be among the first to enjoy the Braumart experience. They stood as the Braumart Concert Orchestra played the National Anthem. The lights dimmed, the Mighty Wurlitzer organ, an instrument rivaling any in Chicago or New York, took the audience on a musical journey around the world. In 2009, a diverse group of artists and community leaders came together to bring this historic space back to life. Friends of the Braumart, a non-profit, tax-exempt, all-volunteer organization, began the planning of the purchase, renovation and operation of the Braumart as a community arts center. It will be a gathering place

POETRY

Genean’s Pity Party

Borderland Arts member and award-winning poet, Genean Granger of Iron Mountain, has been chosen as a finalist in the Tucson, AZ Festival of Books Literary Awards challenge. It is a tough competition with nearly 500 entrants. In her own words:

“My poem, Pity Party, reflects on how I’m viewed with my new accessories, a nasal cannula and portable oxygen. In 1999 I was diagnosed with bronchiectasis and I’ve struggled with breathing issues my entire life. Post having pneumonia in April 2014, I have been oxygen-dependent 24/7. I’ve never wanted to be defined by my illness and prior to being on oxygen, I backpacked around the globe, performed in Community Theater, raised two children, and worked full time as a Certified Occupational Health Nurse.”

I’m gonna’ tell you this world makes it hard to be different, to go around sporting a blue wheelchair sign. I dislike stares that don’t count me as normal. I wear a hose in my nose ‘cause my lungs really suck. Within each a snowstorm battles, while the body they live in weakens and wanes. I’m more than what’s not working inside me. I pull a can of oxygen behind me like a dead dog. Children point and whisper. “Mama, what’s wrong with that lady?” I hear the Calliope, the Carousel’s awhirl. I’m star of the Big Top. A Un-circus experience, I’m a Geek in the making. It doesn’t matter that I wear lipstick, take care of my clothes. It doesn’t count that I smile and I’m pleasant, unlike many who walk in my world. More often than not I’m disregarded, seen but invisible, not someone of worth. It doesn’t matter that I’m educated or that I’ve traveled the world. What they see is not the Who that’s me. People see me lugging groceries, tipping my oxygen into a cart. I see pity in their faces, but their pity’s the last thing I want. I’m still the Me that’s hidden from sight.

I’m funny and smart. I’ve been desired, wedded and bedded. Now, I’m seen as damaged, less than someone who’s whole.

---Genean Granger

Association of Student Artists By Jeff Gurchinoff

It’s time that attention is focused on the next batch of artists emerging to cast influence and inspiration in our world. For the past 23 years in April, the Association of Student Artists has presented an Art Show and Awards Banquet. Last year, with several hundred in attendance, colleges and local groups presented cash awards and scholarships to talented budding apprentices in art. Over $150,000 was awarded by Bay de Noc College, Finlandia University, Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, Kendall College of Art and Design, and Concordia University. As the annual program approaches, we welcome a new group of artists to the stage while we celebrate and view hundreds of their creations and their bright futures.
