Welcome to the Bordentown Regional High School. You, as a substitute teacher, are an important member of our instructional staff. When a regular teacher is absent, you are called upon to carry on daily instruction and guide the children throughout the day.

This booklet has been prepared as a result of suggestions offered by substitute and regular teachers. It is an outline of procedures and helpful information regarding the responsibilities you undertake. We urge you to see any member of the administrative staff if you have any questions concerning substitute procedures.

BORDENTOWN REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

Dear Substitute:

Patrick M. Lynch Principal

As a substitute teacher, you are taking over the duties of the regular classroom teacher for the entire school day. Upon arrival at the school, you should park in any unmarked spot in the side parking lot. You should report to the main office by 7:20 a.m. where you will be given instructions as to the lesson plans, daily schedule, lunch period, and any duties you will complete in the absence of the regular teacher. It will also be necessary for you to sign an attendance card which is your assurance of payment for your services.

Substitute's Responsibilities

As a substitute teacher, you will assume all the daily responsibilities of the teacher whom you replace. As is the case with the regular teacher, you are in full charge of the students. Please keep the following extremely important points in mind:

1. Never leave the students unsupervised.

2. Take firm control over the class without threats.

3. Take attendance personally for each class. You should call the attendance office (extension 1112) when you have finished. Please note: Students are not permitted to take attendance.

4. Make every effort to complete the work assigned.

5. Treat every student in a fair and equitable manner.

6. Enjoy the teaching and student experience.

7. Maintain self-control regardless of the situation.

8. Make students feel as though the work they are doing is educationally valuable. Unfortunately, all too often, students do not value the work they are assigned when a substitute is in the room. This can lead to problems during the period. 9. Maintain a proper learning environment and refer an individual student to the administrative staff when he/she becomes an impediment to this process. 10. Disruptive students are not to remain in the classroom. Should you encounter any student who refuses to cooperate or is hindering the educational experience of others, he/she is to be sent to the assistant principal's office with a note explaining why he/she is leaving; additionally, you should use the classroom telephone to explain that a student is leaving. For sophomores and seniors, call extension 1112. For freshmen and juniors, call extension 1102.

the person or within control of a pupil; (3) for the purpose of self defense; and (4) for the protection of persons or property;

and such acts, or any of them shall not be construed to constitute corporal punishment within the meaning and intendments of this section. TEASING AND HARASSMENT

Students in Bordentown schools are expected to treat one another with respect regardless of gender, race, color, creed, religion, national origin, or sexual orientation. Inappropriate touching, gender biased or racial comments and/or jokes, and name calling of any kind are not permitted on the way to and from school or on school property. All instances of such harassment will be reported to the building administration. Parents will be contacted and appropriate action will be taken. Interventions include, but are not limited to, supportive counseling, detentions, suspensions, and or contacting district and local authorities. For further information, our district website (www.bordentown.k 12.nj .us) contains the detailed version of our harassment policy.

Problem Solvers

After school activities If you have any questions as to whether or not after school activities will be held, please contact the office for information.

Auditorium/Assemblies

The office will announce the time and location of student body assemblies. You should take your class to the assembly when they are called and stay in the assembly hall until the assembly has concluded; at which time you will either take your class back to the classroom or go to your next assigned class or duty.

A-V Equipment

Contact Ms. Nessi in the library prior to 7:30 a.m., if you require a projector, overhead, radio, cd, or vcr/dvd player.

Cafeteria

The cafeteria provides good lunches at a reasonable cost. Your lunch period is shown on your daily schedule. There is a teacher's lunchroom in the building.

Student Cell Phones

No cell phones are permitted in the classroom. If a cell phone is seen or heard, please send the student to the main office. Please call the main office (ext. 1106) to report that the student is coming with a cell phone.

Class Coverage

Each teacher has a "prep" period built into her/his schedule. On some days, if multiple teachers are absent and we do not have enough substitute teachers to cover all of our classes, you may be asked to substitute in a class for another teacher during the "prep" period of the teacher for whom you are substituting.

Custodians

If you are in need of a custodian, contact the main office at extension 1102.

Fire/Emergency Drill Procedure

In each classroom there is an Emergency Management Plan that is typically located in the drawer of the teacher's desk. If it is not there, the teacher should have left detailed directions to find the manual. Please familiarize yourself with the plan for the various drills (fire, stay put/lock down, evacuation). In the event that you are uncertain of what to do in an emergency situation, please ask a faculty member or administrator

Page 11: BORDENTOWN REGIONAL SCHOOL DISTRICT 318 WARD …...BORDENTOWN REGIONAL SCHOOL DISTRICT 318 WARD AVENUE ... circumstances may require the assignment of a substitute for only a portion

Injuries Should a student suffer a serious injury, contact the nurse (extension 1109) and refrain from moving the student if there is a possibility of any broken bones.

Nurse

Our school nurse is located in the administrative wing in room 219. Students who complain of illness should be sent to the nurse with a note.

Plans and Daily Assignments

All substitutes should have clearly outlined plans and assignments for their classes. The plans should be checked prior to the beginning of school in order to ensure that you understand what is to be covered during the day. If plans are incomplete or materials unavailable, please contact the main office and so indicate on the substitute report.

Schedules

You will be given a copy of the bell schedule with the teacher's substitute folder. If we are working on a modified schedule that day, you will be notified of that upon arriving at school.

Student Discipline

Problem students should be sent to the office when a discipline matter arises. Please complete a "Behavior Referral Form" for any student you send to the office. Punishment of an entire class for misbehavior is not to occur. Furthermore, please write a description of the incident for the classroom teacher.

Substitute Report Forms

Following the completion of the school day, all substitutes are required to submit a substitute report to a main office secretary. It is extremely important for the continuity of instruction that these reports be as detailed as possible. If you require more space than the form gives, use extra sheets of paper. In this case, there is no such thing as too much information.

Leaving School

At the conclusion of the school day, please bring the completed substitute report form and substitute folder to the main office to be placed in the teacher's mailbox. Also, please alert the administration to any situations that may have occurred during the school day.

Dress Code

A Public school employee and educator's professional role goes far beyond the teaching/learning process within the classroom. School district employees are also role models to the students. As a role model, the school employee's influence upon the youth is significant, even though subtle at times.

In the capacity of role model, dress becomes important. The manner in which the adult dresses sends signals to the students that display proper attire and indicate that school is a serious workplace - a place where both the students and staff should come prepared to do important life training in an atmosphere appropriate for the task at hand. School is not a place for play, nor should the atmosphere be informal to the point of losing the importance of the primary mission of education.

In order for this to be reinforced, the staff is expected to come to work for this school district appropriately dressed at all times. While it is understood that "appropriate" varies with the activity, it should be understood that the following clothing are examples of inappropriate attire within the normal school day and normal teaching/learning environment:

(1) any torn, tattered, or unclean clothing (2) sweatshirts, sweatpants, or warm-up outfits (3) jeans (4) tank tops / t-shirts (5) strapless dresses / shirts (6) any clothing combination that reveals the midriff or undergarments (7) shorts (8) sneakers

Items 2, 7, and 8 may be worn if they specifically match a school activity (physical education, for example).

It is suggested that men wear slacks or khakis and a collared shirt. Although a tie is not mandatory, it is preferred.

Women should wear slacks or a skirt of an appropriate length and a blouse, sweater, or other professional top.

It is my hope that you will enjoy working at Bordentown Regional High School. We look forward to working with you again in the future.

Revised: June 2008

Dear Substitute Teacher,

Welcome to the Bordentown Regional School District! As a substitute teacher, you are a very vital member of our instructional staff. When a regular teacher is absent, you as the substitute teacher, are called upon to carry on daily instructions and guide the children throughout the day. This manual has been composed for the explicit purpose of clarifying and delineating the various aspects of the daily functioning of substitute teaching in Bordentown Regional Middle School.

It has been prepared as a result of suggestions offered by substitute and regular teachers and provides an outline of procedures and helpful information regarding your responsibilities. By reviewing this manual, it is hoped that each substitute teacher can better meet the demands of teaching with less anxiety.

We urge you to see any member of the administrative staff if you have any questions concerning substitute procedures. Please use the phone in the classroom to call the office if you have any classroom concerns. Wishing you a wonderful teaching experience at Bordentown Regional Middle School!

                Sincerely,

Robert Walder, Principal

P.S.  Please note Emergency Procedures Booklet (Safe Schools Emergency Plan) is located in

the left‐hand top drawer of your teacher desk.  Whenever an evacuation of the building is

Reporting to School

As a substitute teacher, you are taking over the duties of the regular classroom teacher for the entire school day. You should report to the main office of your assigned school by 7:35 a.m. where you will be given instructions as to lessons plans, daily schedule, lunch period, and any duties you will complete in the absence of the regular teacher.

Your Responsibilities

As a substitute teacher, you will assume all the daily responsibilities of the teacher whom you replace.

As is the case with the regular teacher, you are in full charge of the students. Please keep the following extremely important points in mind. A good substitute:

1. Never leaves your students unsupervised. Students are to be under the active supervision of school personnel at all times. Students are not to be alone in classrooms at any time. Whenever one or more students are in a classroom, they are to be overseen by a teacher or aide.

2. Takes firm control over the class without threats. 3. Makes every effort to complete the work and/or assignments that are provided by the

regular teacher. 4. Interacts with students in a favorable manner, circulates among the students in the

classroom as they work. Does not sit behind the desk. 5. Conducts him/her self in a manner which demonstrates an enjoyment of teaching. 6. Doesn’t lose self-control. 7. Gives pupils a positive impression of helpfulness and not of merely marking time. 8. Maintains a proper learning environment and refers individual students to the

administrative staff when he/she becomes an impediment to this process.

Disruptive students are not to remain in the classroom. Should you encounter any student who challenges your authority, he/she is to be sent to the office with a note explaining the situation. (Each classroom permits immediate contact with the office through the use of the telephone, extension 2000 which is usually located near the door.) Simply pick up the phone on the wall by the classroom door and dial 2000, 2008, 2011 or 2003.

Student Guidebook

If you find yourself substituting regularly in the Bordentown Regional School District, it is suggested that you review copies of both the “Staff Manual” and Student Guidebook”. These two volumes will enable you to become familiar with staff responsibilities, along with expectations of student behavior, which are too numerous to include in this guidebook.

Copies are available from the building secretary.

We expect all members of the MacFarland Intermediate School community to behave in a manner that helps us provide the appropriate atmosphere for learning. Recognizing that our students are in a time of life when personal independence and self-expression are being sought, and when much social etiquette and conflict resolution strategies still need to be learned, the administration and teachers hold firmly to the belief that it is the primary responsibility of the student body to assure that everyone finds MacFarland Intermediate to be a school of peace and safety. To this end the professional staff agrees to support standards for civility, dress grooming and social interaction. Therefore, it is important to document some of the critical expectations for the student conduct and the consequences for disregarding them. General School Rules

It is expected that all members of the Clara Barton School community behave in a manner that helps provide the appropriate atmosphere for learning. As such, we have taken measures to instill positive character traits in students, the encouragement needed to make good choices showing respect for oneself and others as well as taking pride and ownership in the school. Our programs include but are not limited to school-wide character education, adult-student mentoring partnerships, clubs and activities, etc. In addition to fostering and promoting a positive school climate, committees such as the Intervention and Referral Services Team meet weekly to address student issues; both academic and behavioral. Teachers, parents and support personnel work together to develop positive plans of action for students in need of academic/behavioral remediation. These plans are implemented and revisited frequently in order to offer students the greatest possible degree of scholastic success. The CBS Student Code of Conduct is established to achieve the following purposes: 1.) Foster the health, safety and social/emotional well being of students 2.) Support the establishment and maintenance of civil, safe, secure, supportive and

disciplined school environments conducive to learning 3.) Promote achievement of high academic standards 4.) Prevent the occurrence of problem behaviors 5.) Establish parameters for the intervention and remediation of student behaviors at all

stages of identification 6.) Establish parameters for school responses to violations of the code of students

conduct that take into account, at a minimum, the severity of offenses, the developmental ages of the student offenders and students’ histories of inappropriate behaviors.

Re: Welcome

Dear Substitute Teacher: Welcome to Peter Muschal Elementary School! You provide a very important service to us when you accept the responsibility for carrying on the instructional programs for our children during the absence of the regular classroom teacher. This handbook has been prepared to help you have a productive day and to familiarize you with procedures within the building. The guide is organized into three sections:

General information about the building and instructional programs General School Procedures Pupil supervision

Part three also includes some specific details of classroom routines provided by the teacher for who you are substituting. An index for easy reference to specific items follows part three. We at Peter Muschal School value the services you provide for us and hope that this manual will help make your assignment productive and enjoyable. Please feel free to ask any member of our team – custodial, clerical, paraprofessional, teaching, and/or administrative – for clarification or for more detailed information. Sincerely, Robin Blue Assistant Principal

PART I

Substitute Responsibilities

Again, welcome to the Peter Muschal School. As a substitute, you are an important member of our instructional staff. In a regular teacher’s absence, you are called upon to carry on daily instruction and guide the children throughout the day. We thank you in advance for your efforts.

As in the case with the regular teacher, you are in full charge of the students. Please keep the following extremely important points in mind.

A great substitute:

1. NEVER leaves the students unsupervised. 2. Takes FIRM, POSITIVE control over the class. 3. Makes EVERY effort to complete the work assigned by the regular teacher. 4. Interacts with students in a FAVORABLE manner. 5. Maintains SELF CONTROL. 6. Conducts themselves in a manner which demonstrates the ENJOYMENT of

teaching. 7. Gives pupils a POSITIVE impression of helpfulness and not of merely marking

time. 8. Maintains a proper learning environment and refers individual students to the

administrative staff only when they become an impediment to this process.

Disruptive students are not to remain in the classroom. Should you encounter any student who challenges your authority, they are to be sent to the Office of Student Services with a note explaining the situation. Each classroom permits immediate contact with the office through the use of the telephone in the classroom and dialing the Office of Student Services (Ext. 4112).

Student Illness or Injury

The school is staffed with a nurse, Mrs. Linda Eaton. Her office is located at the top of the ramps (Room 138).

Illness: Students complaining of illness should be sent to the nurse using the appropriate pass. Please use your good judgment to determine this need. In case of serious illness, notify the office to send a nurse to your room.

Injury: If injury requires a nurse’s attention, send the child to the nurse’s office, or contact the office to have a nurse come to your room.

Accidents: In case of accidental injuries in class or on the playground, you will be requested to fill out an accident report giving details of the incident. Please complete this form and return it to a nurse before leaving the building. It is also important to leave a note for the regular teacher.

Fire Drills: State law requires two fire drills per month. Signs indicating primary and alternate fire exit routes are posted in each classroom. Please familiarize yourself with these routes before students arrive.

Students are expected to be silent and to follow directions whenever the fire alarm sounds. It is your responsibility to take the teacher’s grade book and to take attendance when you are safely outside. In addition, you are to take the green and red card with you outside. Once attendance is taken, if you have any children missing or extra children from another class, show the RED side of the card. If all students are present, show the GREEN side of the card.

Students who are away from their class when the alarm sounds have been instructed to exit the building at the nearest exit and to report the teacher closest to that exit.

General School Rules

We expect all members of the Peter Muschal School community to behave in a manner that helps us provide the appropriate atmosphere for learning. Recognizing that our students are in a time of life when personal independence and self-expression are being sought, and when much social etiquette and conflict resolution strategies still need to be learned, the administration and teachers hold firmly to the belief that it is the primary responsibility of the student body to assure that everyone finds Peter Muschal to be a school of peace and safety. To this end the professional staff agrees to support standards for civility, dress grooming and social interaction. Therefore, it is important to document some of the critical expectations for the student conduct and the consequences for disregarding them. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ACCESS AGREEMENT

I, _________________________________, as a substitute in the Bordentown Regional School District, am aware of the significant responsibilities associated with the use of information technology and the Internet. By my signature below, I certify that I have read the following policies, that I understand them and that I agree to be bound by them. Specifically, I agree to:

1) Use district Informational Technology Resources for education purposes only.  2) Treat with respect and exercise reasonable care in the use of all district computer hardware, software and communications resources.    3) Not reveal to anyone else passwords or other access codes assigned to me so that I may use the Information Technology Resources of the district; not to trespass in another’s folders, work or files for any reason.    4) Make responsible, cost effective use of district consumable supplies such as paper, electronic media and printer ink and toner.    5) Not develop, acquire, display or transmit any material by electronic means or hardcopy that could be considered by a reasonable person in our community as obscene, racist, abusive, degrading to men or women by gender or demonstrating intolerance or prejudice toward any ethnic or religious group.    6) Not use district technology resources to support political or religious causes or support candidates for public, elected office.

7) Not to violate copyright laws. Unless authorized by the Technology Department…

1) Make no attempt to in any way, alter, modify, upgrade, or repair any district hardware, including, but not limited to, computers, interface cards, monitors, printers, scanners, wiring, or cabling.    2) Make no attempt to damage, modify or upgrade any district software;    3) Make no attempt to install software of any kind on any district computer or network or download and install programs of any kind to any district computers.

Technology is a powerful tool that can enhance instruction. All classrooms are equipped with computers that have Internet access. The district has installed filtering software to block sites that are considered inappropriate. The filtering software currently used is Marshall 8e6. Although the software is highly effective each and every staff member

maintains the responsibility to closely monitor student use of the Internet when that student is assigned to him/her. If a staff member suspects any misuse of technology by a student, the staff member will report that suspicion to the building principal or designee.

Each staff member will:

1.                  Receive an e-mail account that is assigned by the district. E-mail IS NOT PRIVATE and may be monitored by the school district.

2.                  Be given a password to access the computer system. In accepting this password, the staff member agrees to keep if confidential and report any breaches of security to building principal or designee.

3.                  Contact appropriate supervisors or school administrator if special provisions are needed such as the establishment of individual or group student e-mail accounts that would enhance instruction.

4.                  Report and malfunction or hardware problem to the district Technology Department via the online reporting system.

5.                   Note: the use of the computer, including the Internet/ E-mail connections is closely monitored and IS NOT PRIVATE. Network storage space, called home directories, is provided for every staff member and is treated as lockers. The home directories are closely monitored and may be inspected at anytime if there is reason to believe that there is a difficulty. This means the Network Administrator reviews files and communications contained in the home directories to maintain system integrity and insure that users are using the system consistent with district policy. User should not expect that files stored on district servers will always be private.

6.                  If a staff member inadvertently accesses an inappropriate site, it must be reported immediately to the Director of Technology.

Bullying: Guidelines for Teachers Some anti-bullying policies actually do more harm than good. Educators can use the following tips to intervene appropriately when bullying occurs.

THE DO's:

Stop the bullying immediately. Stand between the bullied student and the bully(ies), blocking eye contact. Don't send any bystanders away. To avoid escalating the tension, wait until later to sort out the facts. Talk to the parties involved separately once they are calm.

Refer to school rules regarding bullying. Speak in a matter-of-fact tone of voice to describe what you heard or saw. Let all students know bullying is always unacceptable.

Support the bullied child. Do this in a way that allows him or her dignity and to feel safe from retaliation. Make a point to see the child later in private if he or she is upset. Increase supervision to assure bullying is not repeated.

Offer guidance to bystanders. Let them know how they might appropriately intervene or get help next time. Tell them you noticed their inaction or that you're pleased with the way they tried to help.

Impose immediate consequences. Wait until all parties have calmed down. Do not require that students apologize or make amends that may be insincere. The consequences should be logical and connected to the offense. A first step could be taking away social privileges i.e. recess or lunch in the cafeteria.

Notify colleagues and parents. Let the bully know he or she is being watched.

Follow up and intervene as necessary. Support the bullied child and the bully, enabling them to vent feelings and recognize their own

behavior. The bully may need to learn new methods of using his or her power and influence in the classroom.

THE DON'Ts:

Do not confuse bullying with conflict. Bullying is a form of victimization, and addressing it as a "conflict" downplays the negative behavior and the seriousness of the effects. Educators should strive to send the message that "no one deserves to be bullied," and to let the bully know the behavior is wholly inappropriate.

Do not use peer mediation. It can be very upsetting for a child who has been bullied to face his or her tormentor in mediation. Giving both parties an equal voice can empower the bully and make the bullied student feel worse. In addition, there is no evidence that peer mediation is effective in stopping bullying.

Do not use group treatment for bullies. Some schools use therapeutic strategies such as anger management, skill-building, empathy-building and self-esteem building to reach the bully. In practice, group members can actually reinforce each others' bullying and antisocial behavior.
