Step 1: Your home location All Boral roof tiles are salt-safe and frost resistant makingthem suitable for any location, particularly coastal areas.Boral roof tiles are built to last with a 50-year warranty*against defects.
Step 2: Shape The profile refers to a roof tile’s shape and design. Boralroof tile profiles range from smooth flat tiles to prominentundulations or waves on the surface of the tile. Keyconsiderations when choosing a tile profile will be the pitch ofyour roof as well as its style.
Step 3: ColourWhen it comes to choosing a colour, it’s easy to beoverwhelmed by the number of options available. Boralhas carefully selected colours for each roof tile range, so youcan be confident in choosing the right roof colour for your
home.
Step 4: Roofing essentialsSarking
Talk to any good roof installer and they will likely tell you Sarking(reflective foil insulation) is essential for enhancing the energyefficiency and performance of your roof. Sarking is a thermalbarrier, water-resistant, dust resistant and a fire retardantmembrane; its use is recommended under all roofing materials.
Installation
Choose a qualified roofing installer and ensure yourroof is installed properly and to Boral specifications. Werecommend an established independent installer from theBoral preferred installer network.

exceptional beauty and performance
Terracotta roong has brought beauty and character to the roofscapes of Europe and Asia and has stood the test of time.
Colour Retention Terracotta tiles are crafted from prepared natural clays that
are kiln-red to temperatures of 1100°C for exceptional
character, strength, high colour retention and negligible
maintenance requirements. Terracotta roong substantially
retains its appearance with age, maintaining the aesthetic
appearance of your home over time.
Long Lasting – 50 Year WarrantyWith a 50 year warranty against defects 1, Boral terracotta
tiles are manufactured to last and will make a beautiful and
hardwearing roof for your home. Terracotta roong has
brought beauty and character to the roofscapes of Europe
and Asia and has stood the test of time over centuries in
these continents.
Salt-Safe & Frost Resistant
All Boral Terracotta tiles are salt-safe making them suitablefor any location including coastal areas and sites with close
proximity to breaking surf.
The 50 year warranty on Boral Terracotta tiles is provided to
all terracotta tiles regardless of the location of the property.
Thermal Performance The thermal performance of a roof refers to how it affects
the temperature within a house and relates to the energy
used within the house to maintain the temperature at a
comfortable level.
Further improvements in thermal performance can be gained
by using sarking, increased insulation, a lighter roof colour and
changes in the overall design considerations. The addition of
sarking under tiles considerably reduces the need for cooling
in the home and is recommended in all roong applications.
Sound PerformanceEnjoy more peace and quiet with Boral Terracotta roof tiles
as their density helps reduce sound inside the home such as
trafc, aircrafts and trains. 2
Low MaintenanceOnce Terracotta roof tiles are properly installed they have
negligible maintenance requirements for the life of the roof.
Should a section of the roof ever be damaged or require
modication (e.g. installing a skylight), only the affected tiles
usually require replacement or removal.
Fire ResistanceBoral Terracotta roof tiles are non-combustible and can be
safely used in bushre-prone areas. In areas assessed as BAL-
12 to BAL-40, sarking with a ammability index of not more
than 5 must be installed under the tiles and cover the whole
roof. In BAL-FZ areas, specic construction requirementscan be obtained at www.rtaa.com.au.
Rainwater & Tank SafetyBoral Terracotta roof tiles are non-toxic and provided your
roof is clean and healthy, can be suitable for the collection of
rainwater for reuse. Any excess water can be channelled into
grey water tanks. This is good news for those thinking about
water conservation and great news for your garden. Boral
Terracotta roof tiles are manufactured to AS 2049 ensuring
the surface treatment is free of any elements or chemicals in
concentrations known to be hazardous to health.

living energy-wise
Energy efficient roof systems
TIP Sarking should always be used in low pitched roofs to protect against wind-blown spray and condensation, and is mandatory in bush fire zones and high wind areas
Awareness of the impact of our energy and water consumptionon the environment has today reached new heights.
ORIENTATIONSite orientation or the position of a building relative to the sunprovides the opportunity to take advantage of the naturally available
energy. With northerly living areas the use of extended eaves willblock the higher summer sun while allowing the low winter sun toenter your home.
Consideration should be given to the following factors to enhancethe thermal performance of tiled roofs.
THERMAL MASSMaterials with high thermal mass, or ability to absorb and storeheat energy, are important in most Australian climates where thereis a need to average out temperature extremes. The density of clayand concrete effectively delays the flow of heat producing a warmerhouse in winter and a cooler house in summer.
COLOURHome builders are increasingly recognising the opportunity toimprove energy efficiency simply by selecting a lighter colour for theexposed roof surface. Although the research is continuing, so far ithas shown that light coloured roof tiles can lower the airtemperature in the roof space by up to 9 degrees compared todark tiles. * To find out the Boral tile BASIX colour ratings, go onlineor call us on 1300 363 072.
VENTILATIONCross-ventilation, with openings on both sides of a home, allowsbreezes to circulate for a cooler home. This is of high importance in
the roof space, so radiant heat building up from the hot summersun can escape. Ideally, vents should be installed in the roof tohelp regulate air flow all year round.
SARKINGInsulating walls and ceilings is one of the best ways to efficientlyregulate temperature. Now recognised as of equal importance is
the reflective foil insulation, called sarking, which sits between therafters and roof tile battens.
Sarking is a type of foil used as insulation and can reflect radiantheat from your roof space on a hot summer day. This dramaticallyreduces the temperature in the roof on hot days, and in winter itworks in the reverse by reducing heat loss through the roof.
In the wet, the waterproof benefits of sarking cannot beunderestimated and it provides an extra level of security againstunpredictable storms. We recommend its use for all tiled roofs tomaximise the energy efficiency of your home and to ensure yourroof remains watertight.
RAINWATERIn terms of collecting tank water, a roof’s span will clearly affect thevolume of rain collected, so ensure a guttering and downpipesystem of adequate size. Tiled roofs of greater pitch will moreefficiently deliver rainwater to this system, particularly if the profileis shaped.
So too has the many ways our homes can more efficiently manage these resources.
Legislative change is turning this knowledge into action through minimum standards for new houses that will provide bigsavings in energy, and by default, energy bills.

Building your home to be energy efficient can beeasier than you think however, it will involve designand planning around key considerations including;
• environmental impact
• your comfort at home in hot and cold weather
• energy use
Environmental ImpactIt’s all about taking a long-term view of ourimpact on the environment. An energy-wise homewill use the best combination of sustainablebuilding considerations such as site orientation(where a home is positioned on a block), wall andceiling insulation, ventilation and building materialsto reduce energy consumption and greenhousegas emissions.
Your Comfort at HomeIn Australia, it is estimated that 38% of energyused in homes is for heating and cooling the
spaces in which we live*. This means that withgood design and planning, building with roof tilescan actually make a difference to the temperatureinside your home and reduce the need for heatersand air-conditioners. Great news for your comfortindoors and particularly helpful for saving onenergy costs. And you can rest assured Boral rooftiles are supported by Boral’s 50 year warrantyagainst defects. ^
‘Built in’ energy savingswith passive designRoof tiles used together with good design principles such as passive solardesign can make a significant difference to energy consumption used forheating and cooling your home – energy efficiency that is virtually ‘built in’.
Note: It is recommended passive design features are used in combination, not individually, and they are tailored to each climate and home.
Passive Design – How it Works
ORIENTATION AND SOLAR ACCESSSite orientation or the position of the house relative to the sun – house cantake advantage of naturally available energy.
GLAZING AND SHADINGUse of eaves and glazing windows and doors.
SEALING AND VENTILATIONCross ventilation – openings on both sides of the home means fresh breezescan circulate better. Thermal mass in internal walls is still needed to help
moderate (even out) temperatures. Vents should also be installed in the roofspace to help regulate air flow year-round.
INSULATION The use of insulation to enable walls and ceilings to act as a barrier to heatflow is essential to providing year-round comfort.
THERMAL MASS The ability of a material to absorb heat energy. High density materials suchas bricks and roof tiles have high thermal mass which, when used correctlycan moderate internal temperatures by averaging day/night extremes.
