Bighorn River AllianceMISSION STATEMENT:The mission of the Bighorn River Alliance is to protect, preserve and sustain the wild trout fishery of the Bighorn River. Understanding that the placement of the river within the Crow Tribal Reservation provides, unique conservation challenges, the BHRA (Bighorn River Alliance) works to collaborate with tribal members, federal and state agencies, and local businesses to preserve fishing opportunities and encourage river and land use practices that are in the best interest of wild trout.

About the Bighorn Wild Trout Fishery

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The Bighorn wild trout fishery is one of the worlds top fly fishing destinations for anglers around the world. Every year, thousands of anglers visit its waters for the opportunity to catch wild trout. The wild trout section, defined as waters below the Yellowtail/aferbay dam to thecity of Hardin hold some of the highest trout populations found in the state of Montana. The recreational impact of flyflishing brings in an estimated 40-45 million dollars a year to the state of Montana and to one of the poorest counties in the state Bighorn County. The Bighorn River is a desinatino river, located within Crow Tribal Reservation boundaries, which makes it a unique fishing experience for anglers.

Symptoms of Bighorn Problems

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Most of these problems are results of Bighorn Water Management and over conservative water accounting that the river ultimately ends of paying the prices for.

River Recreation vs. Lake Recreation

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Reservoirs all over the US are managed to always hit full pool to meet the multiple use demands of our water resources. On the Bighorn, the Lake is managed for 1. Hydropower development at the Yellowtail Dam, and 2. Lake use recreation. However, climate change (with more precipitation occurring as rainfall as opposed to snow pack and the issue of sediment accumulating and eventually filling in Horseshoe bay, calls for us to revisit the discussion of target elevations, and how we can best manage the lake in a way that puts less stress on the river. , angler use, economic evidence and the rate of sediment fill behind the dam

River Changes

Flow 3600 cfs

Flow 2500 cfs

Flow 2000 cfs

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Feeling the need to specific lake elevations in March affects the downstream health of the fishery, especially during the spawning time of Brwon and rainbow tout. If snowpack levels (which do not reflect precipitation due to warmer temperatures) show low pack, then cuts are made, often to the expense of the river) to increase hitting March targets. With more moisture appearing as rain, we often run int othe problem of hitting full pool early, and then having to release too much water in the summer, which impacts recreation and trout recruitment.
