A two-week study program, offered by Hong
Kong-America Center, is open to all students of
universities in HK during the semester break.
Join the HK student delegation to Arizona and
Southern California this summer.
One week on Arizona-Mexico Border and
one week in LA. Program Fee: HK$ 25000
– This includes accommodations, local
transportation, and admissions to all
museums. Airfare and US Visa application
fees are NOT included.
Pre-departure orientation and follow-up
reflection program in HK.
Students may be eligible for university
subsidy.

Saturday, December 28 – Friday, January 3, Week 1
Day 1, Sat December 28: Depart HK, fly to LAX, transfer, fly to Tucson AZ, arrive Sat eve; gain 1 day) Recovering from jet lag
Day 2, Sun December 29: Orientation and cultural program in Tucson: Visit “Old Tucson,” attend Mariachi Mass, eat Mexican food.
Day 3, Mon December 30: Introductory video on the “Migrant Protection Program.” Visit the U.S.-Mexican Border in Nogales, AZ: Look at the militarization of the border and the desert environment, study early Chinese immigration to Mexico and the U.S. at the Pimeria Alta Museum. Compare border cities: Hong Kong and Shenzhen/Nogales AZ and Nogales Mexico.
Day 4, Tue December 31: Presentation by immigrants, excursion to Mt. Lemmon, stay overnight in the mountain lodge. Celebrate New Year’s Eve.
Day 5, Wed January 1: Hike among the pine forest; return to Tucson for relaxation. Enjoy the Chinese banquet.
Day 6, Thu January 2: Service learning unit at the migrant shelter in Tucson, simulation and presentation about migrant detention centers. Write to detained migrants in Chinese and English.
Day 7, Fri January 3: Immigration Policy: Possible panel on the “push-pull” factors of out-migration. Desert hike.
Saturday, January 4 – Friday, January 10, Week 2
Day 8, Sat January 4: Immigration Politics: Simulation of the Electoral College and Voting Rights. Arizona’s role in the political landscape. Enjoy last evening in Tucson with dinner and shopping on Fourth Avenue.
Day 9, Sun January 5: Fly to Los Angeles. Check into Hotel. Multicultural Activity in Los Angeles organized by Ms. Sarah Rodriquez of UCI and Mr. Edward Chung of HKAC
Day 10, Mon January 6: Program Overview, Orientation and LMU Campus Tour by Dr. Yongsun Paik of CAB Director & LMU Professor. Lecture: “Global Talent Management” or “Migration Policy: Implications for US and Mexico”
Day 11, Tue January 7: Morning Lecture: Sociology of U.S. Immigration; Guided tour to Downtown LA; Site Visit: Los Angeles Immigration Court or Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights
Day 12, Wed January 8: Morning Lecture: Contributions of the Foreign-Born to the California Economy by Prof. Jeff Thies of IBES Director & LMU Professor; Movie Screenings & Discussion: 1. Out of Many, One, 2. Between Borders: American Migrant Crisis. Free Time for afternoon
Day 13, Thu January 9: Bus to Downtown LA -> Loyola Law School; Morning Lecture: “Immigrant Advocacy on the Ground” by Prof. Kathleen Kim; Site Visit: Loyola Immigrant Justice Clinic @LLS or Catholic Charities of Los Angeles
Day 14, Fri January 10: Check out of the hotel -> Program Reflection in the morning -> Farewell Session -> Departure to Hong Kong
