July 2019 From the President’s Desk Hi Everyone, Well after a month away I guess I am supposed to say its great to be back home. I have got to be honest after leaving LA and temperatures in the high 20s and 30s and spend- ing a month having a blast travelling from LA to Chicago and back on Route 66 we did not want to come home. We set off from LA to Chicago with 3 Camaros, 13 Eco Boost Mustangs and 1 V8 Mustang. Wendy and I were delayed getting our car from Hertz and by the time we got there all they had left was a V8! I did not complain. I had the oppor- tunity to give both cars, the Eco Boost and the V8 a good blast out on the freeways and I have to say I was pretty impressed with the Eco Boost. Performance wise it matched the V8 in pick up to the Ton but the V8 pulled away after about 120MPH. On one of the long straights leading into Bonneville I gave the V8 a bit of a burst up to 145MPH but it started to float a little in the rear end so I backed off. The Eco Boost being a lot lighter handled a lot better, if only they could make it sound like the V8 they would be on to a winner. The whole trip was amazing and would recommend it to all. Noddy Watts and his partner Andrea were great tour guides and had every detail covered. All the cars were set up with pre programmed GPS's, covered in silver ferns and Kiwis on Tour stick- ers, and good Hotels were waiting for us at the end of a hard days drive. Every morning we would gather to receive our run sheet for the day. The run sheet laid out recom- mended highlights and stops for lunch on the way, also covered possible speed traps and driving/traffic tips. The whole tour was 29 days and covered close to 6000 miles. During that time we met some amazing people and had some awesome experiences. Here are some of the highlights - smoking the Mustang at Bonneville Salt Flats, standing on the corner in Winslow Arizona with the whole tour group singing Take it Easy by the Eagles at the top of our voices, snow at Mount Rushmore, partying in Fremont Street Los Vegas, three members of our group got Route 66 tattoo'sI was not one, Chicago Jazz band sung Mustang Sally to 50 drunken Kiwi's, Mormon Tabernacle Choir rehearsal in Salt Lake City, drag races at Chicago and baseball, watching the Chicago White Sox, a day spent at the LA roadster show, over 1000 roadsters and a kilometer square of car swaps, cars for sale and stalls, hot laps at the Shelby factory in Las Vegas and many many more. Thanks to our newly formed run committee sounds like the Ten Pin Bowling run was a great success and I am looking forward to the July Waihi Beach RSA quiz and meal run. Finally, what did the Camaro owner do once he had finished beating the Mustang? Turned off his XBox and went to bed. Cheers Darrell See the next page for a few pics from Darrell and Wendy’s trip. BOP Mustang Owners Club. July 2019

    From the President’s Desk

    Hi Everyone,

Well after a month away I guess I am supposed to say its great to be back home. I have

got to be honest after leaving LA and temperatures in the high 20s and 30s and spend-

ing a month having a blast travelling from LA to Chicago and back on Route 66 we did

  • Cooly Rocks

Thanks to Dave and Julie Flett

Cooly Rocks On This is a festival to celebrate every thing there is to like about the 50’s 60’s and 70’s. mu-sic, cars, dancing, nostalgia and lots of fun, even a vintage bake off. This is the 9th year it has been held at Coolangatta on the Gold Coast and is Australia’s largest rock n roll and nostalgia festival. Along with the expected car cruises, show and shine, and beauty pageants, there were some new surprises for me like the Indian Motorcycle club display and parade, the gogo-mobil’s (the gogomobil dart was produced in Australia), poodle parade, retro badge de-sign and making, to name just a few. We spent one day looking at the hundreds of trade tents and retro market stalls spread along the beach front and stopping to listen to the bands and watch the dancing at all the stages spread the length of the beach front. Some 15+ bands were on the program for Saturday alone. The show n shine was a big draw card on Saturday with 1000’s of ve-hicles parked up, some weird and wonderful and some rare and racey. The Queensland police even had their new pursuit vehicle ( Kia Stinger) on display all decked out with the latest technology. To do justice to this show you probably need to allow at least 2 days to see this 5 day event. The highlight for me was meeting and talking with Jim Richards who was on the Shan-non’s display with the first racing Mustang, celebrating 55 years of Mustang racing. What a great event to attend a bit like a mini “Hot August Nights”. Great time of the year on the Gold Coast perfect temperature and no crowds and cheap accommodation. I thor-oughly recommend you add it to your must see car shows. Dave & Julie Flett

  • June Club Run

    10 Pin Bowling

    June Club Run

On a beautiful but very crisp morning the Tauranga contingent met at Tauranga Crossing

to head out to Rotorua where we met up with the Rotorua contingent in the Bunnings

carpark. After the requisite chit chat, Pauline and Grahame led the group of around 20

cars out of town on our way through some spectacular countryside to The Landing Cafe

on the shores of Lake Tarawera.

With the cars all lined up backing onto the lake and looking fabulous, we headed in to

satisfy the inner man or woman as the case may be. Food was very good and company

was great as always. After more chit chat and with a little bit of time up our sleeves,

Pauline and Grahame again led us back to town via the scenic route.

We stopped at the Look Out for the Green and Blue Lakes, and then carried on around

the Okareka Loop Road – a little spot of New Zealand that was new to me and quintes-

sential NZ scenery – just gorgeous.

Then it was into town for the annual 10 Pin Bowling Shake Down with all the usual highs

and lows. Our top scorer, Bryan Ashe, managed to get at least 4 strikes in a row and was

pretty unassailable after that with a final score of 163. The bottom end we will not talk

about – least said, soonest forgotten!

After the bowling action there was only the awards to give out and these went to:

Best presented car as selected buy the staff at The Landing Cafe went to Julie Flett.

Their comment was that it was a very classy car.

Dipstick award went to John for a small misdemeanour around using the Exit as an

Entrance at Tauranga Crossing. There was another contender but it was generally

agreed that getting a little smoke action on your tyres is just part of having a Mus-

    tang!

Bryan Ashe took out the bowling award, but unfortunately we didn’t have it with us

so it is coming to you Bryan.

The raffle lucky draw went to Dave Corrin.

See all the evidence on the next few pages.

  • Some Bits and Pieces from the Editor

The Committee is currently working on the All USA Day which will be held on 17 November. Please mark this date in your diaries. At some stage we will be asking for volunteers as usual.

Convention looms. If you have not already both registered and booked your accom-modation it would be a good idea to attend to these now as both are limited. The theme for Sunday night is Western and we are in the process of organizing a venue to hold a meeting for those attending so we can sort out our dress up for which we are now renowned. Please start to get your thinking caps on so we can uphold our reputation for being stand out and unique. An email will be sent out once we have the venue tied down.

I am always on the hunt for items for the newsletter so if you know of something that would interest our club members, please write a few lines about it and send it through to me with a pic or two and I will happily include it. [email protected]

And this popped up in Facebook recently and thought it would be a good thing to include here:
