William D. HartWilliam D. Hart of Allenton died Saturday, January 18, 2014, at St. Joseph’s Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born March 6, 1931, in Richfield to the late William and Helen (nee Kuckuk) Hart.

Bill proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Following his discharge he was united in marriage to Patricia C. Boden on June 30, 1956, at St. Mathias Catholic Church in Nabob.

Bill was a painter for over 40 years, working for several painting contractors during his career. He enjoyed buying and restoring antiques, was a very talented woodworker and an accomplished bowler in his younger years.

He loved spending time with his family, listening to polka music and taking care of the yard.

He was a member of the Fohl-Martin Post #483 American Legion in Allenton and the local painters union.

Bill is survived by his wife of 57 years, Patricia, 4 children: Steve (Carol) of Allenton, Barbara (fiancé Rick Beckett) Ortlieb of Menomonee Falls, Bob (Michelle) of West Bend and Brian (Eva) of Allenton and grand-children: Lindsay (Tom Schilz) Hart, Nicole (Aaron

Lahr) Hart, Derek (Stephanie Chevallay) Ortlieb, Ashley Ortlieb, Samantha Hart, Brett Hart and Macario Diaz. He is further survived by his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Gertrude Disler of West Bend, Raymond (Marcella) Boden of Hartford, Audrey Rosbeck of Theresa, Lorraine Boden of Harford and Ruth Boden of Nenno, dear friends Larry and Marilyn Klein and nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents William and Helen Hart, his son Jeff, his siblings: James (Marion), Donald, David and Tom and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Kathleen (Fritz) Wagner, Jacob Disler, Daniel (Pat) Boden, Leroy Boden, Bob Rosbeck, Ralph Boden, and Marilyn (Alex) Reinders.

A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, January 23, 2014, at 6:00pm at Resurrection Catholic Church in Allenton. The family will greet relatives and friends from 3:00pm until 5:45pm.  

We would like to extend a heartfelt Thank You to the Allenton and West Bend Rescue Squads and the staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital for their compassionate care.

Dorothy L. GehLDorothy L. Gehl, age 89, of Hartford passed away Monday, January 20, 2014, surrounded by her loving family at the Wellington Place, Hartford.

She was born April 28, 1924, in Clayton, Wisconsin to Adolph and Grace (nee Infalt) Pederson. She was united in marriage to Albert W. Gehl on November 12, 1948.

Dorothy worked for Broan Manufacturing for over 25 years and also as a greeter at Walmart. She enjoyed flowers, knitting, (especially knitting scarves for her children), making angels, and bowling.

She is survived by her loving children, Jerome Rettler of Alabama, Kurt (Noreen) Rettler of Florida, Barbara (Dean) Mullins of Menomonee Falls, Bonnie (Wayne) Lien of Black River Falls, and Gloria Zimmerman of Hartford, Mary (Ken) Rahlf of Mayville, Michael (Peggy) Gehl of West Bend, and Phyllis (Bill) Schuppel of Slinger; 20 cherished grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; her dear sister, Mildred Zurn; 1 half-brother and 4 half-

sisters. Dorothy is further survived by other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Albert; 7 siblings-in-law and their spouses; her daughter-in-law, Marlene Rettler; and her brother-in-law, Bob Zurn.

Funeral services for Dorothy will be held Friday, January 24, 2014, at 7:00pm at the Shimon Funeral Home (824 Union Street

Hartford) with Fr. Richard Stoffel officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends on Friday at the funeral home from 4:00pm until the time of service.

$ 1 (8 oz.) sour cream

$ 1 (4 oz.) can  mushrooms or sliced fresh mushrooms

$ 1 pkg. onion soup mix

$ 1 can cream of celery or mushroom soup

$ 11/2 lb. round steak cut in thin strips

Mix all ingredients except sour cream in a cov-ered casserole (I usually use my 9x13-inch pan and cover with aluminum foil). Bake at 275˚ for 4 hours. Stir in sour cream and return to oven for a half hour more. Serve over noodles or rice.

Steak Salad-Stuffed PocketsDEBBIE CULLEN, WEST BEND

$ 1/4 c. lemon juice

$ 3 Tbs. extra-virgin olive oil

$ 2 tsp. Dijon mustard

$ 1/4 tsp. salt or to taste

$ freshly ground pepper, to taste

$ 1 lb. top round steak, 11/2 inches thick, trimmed

$ 4 c. romaine lettuce, chopped

$ 1 medium cucumber, diced

$ 1 large tomato, diced

$ 8 (4-inch) whole-wheat pitas, or four (8-inch) pitas, split open

Position rack in upper third of oven; preheat broiler. Whisk lemon juice, oil, mustard, salt and pepper in a large bowl. Place steak in a shal-low dish and pour half the dressing over it. Let marinate at room temperature, turning once, for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, prepare salad by add-ing lettuce, cucumber and tomato to remaining dressing in bowl; toss to coat. Transfer meat to broiling pan. Broil for 5 minutes on each side for medium-rare, or until it reaches desired done-ness. Transfer to a cutting board, let rest for 3 minutes, then slice thinly against the grain. Mix the meat with the salad and fill each pita. Serve immediately.

Marinated Round SteakELLIS KRELL, WEST BEND

$ 3 Tbs. cider vinegar

$ 2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce

$ 1/4 c. finely chopped onion

$ 1 can spaghetti sauce with meat

$ 1 tsp. salt

$ 2 lb. round steak, cut 11/2-inch thick

Mix all ingredients (except meat) together in small saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 10 minutes. Cool.  Put meat in shallow pan; pour sauce over. Put in refrigerator at least 4 hours or overnight.  Drain and scrape off sauce. Place meat over hot coals for 8 to 10 minutes per side. Baste meat with sauce, turn meat over, and cook to taste. Save sauce. Heat and use as gravy over meat and baked potatoes. Cut meat in strips and serve.

$ 11/2 lb. round steak, cut 1/2-inch thick

$ 4 medium carrots

$ 4 medium potatoes, pared and cut in half

$ 1 can cream of mushroom soup

$ 1 envelope dry onion soup mix

$ 1 pkg. frozen peas

Heat oven to 450˚. Cut meat into pieces. Place peas in colander; run cold water over peas until they break apart; drain. Tear off 4 pieces heavy-duty aluminum foil, 18x15-inches ea. On center of each piece place 1 carrot, thinly sliced, one potato, cut into quarters and 1/4 of the meat. Stir together soup and soup mix; spoon over meat and top with peas. Wrap securely; place on ungreased baking sheet. Bake 50 to 60 min-utes or until tender.

Swiss Steak in FoilEUNICE HECKENDORF, JACKSON

$ 1 c. ketchup

$ 1/4 c. flour

$ 2 lb. round steak

$ 1 large onion, thinly sliced

$ 2 Tbs. lemon juice or 1 lemon thinly sliced

Tear off 5 foot length of aluminum foil; fold double. Combine ketchup and flour; spoon half of mixture in center of foil. Place steak on top. Season with salt and pepper; cover meat with onion slices and remaining ketchup mixture. Sprinkle with lemon juice or top with lemon slices. Fold foil over and seal edges securely. Place in shallow baking pan. Bake at 350 to 400˚ for 1½ hours or until meat is tender. Remove foil and cut steak into pieces.

$ 11/2 lbs. boneless round steak

$ 1/4 c. chopped onion

$ 1/4 c. butter, melted

$ 2 c. fresh bread cubes

$ 1/2 c. chopped celery

$ 1 Tbs. dried parsley flakes

$ 1/2 tsp. salt

$ 1/2 tsp. poultry seasoning

$ 1/4 tsp. pepper

$ 1 c. flour

$ 2 Tbs. cooking oil

$ 1 can (103/4 oz.) cream of mushroom soup

$ 11/3 c. water

$ 3/4 tsp. browning sauce

Pound round steak to 1/3-inch thickness. Cut into 6 pieces. Combine onion, butter, bread, celery, parsley, salt, poultry seasoning and pepper. Place 1/3 c. mixture on each piece of steak; roll in flour. In large skillet, brown roll-ups in oil. Combine soup, water and browning sauce, pour over roll-ups. Cover and simmer 2 hours or until meat is tender, turning occasion-ally. Makes 6 servings.

$ 2 lbs. round steak, cut in bite size pieces

$ 1 whole pepper, cut in chunks

$ 1 large tomato, cut in wedges

$ 1 medium onion, chopped

$ 3/4 c. flour

$ powdered ginger, salt and pepper to taste

$ oil for frying

Mix flour with seasonings. Dredge steak in flour mixture. Brown steak in hot oil on both sides. Lower heat, add peppers, onion and a little water. Cover and simmer until tender. Add tomato just to heat through. Serve over hot rice.
