Student Staff Spotlight: Jessica Williams

“My dad taught me that you don’tneed something expensive or super

high tech to take a good picture. It’s all about composition and

what you see.”

Jessica Williams has always had a passion for writing, but it wasn’t until her senior

year of high school when she also discovered how much she loved photography.

After taking an advanced photography class, Jessica realized that she was able to

combine her love of writing with an eye for taking photographs and turn her skills

towards a career in journalism.

“I’ve always enjoyed reading the news and writing. I also have an interest in

photography and all of those things just seemed to add up to journalism,” Jessica

said. “My dad taught me that you don’t need something expensive or super high

tech to take a good picture. It’s all about composition and what you see.”

A Port Jefferson Station native, Jessica is a commuter student and has been

attending Stony Brook for a little over a month, although she has been working in

the Provost’s Liaison’s office since August. While currently undeclared, Jessica

aspires to pursue a major in journalism or creative writing.

“I chose to attend Stony Brook because it was affordable and they have a great

journalism program,” said Jessica. “I really liked all of the opportunities that were offered at Stony Brook and the variety of classes

that I could take. I also love that there are so many students.”

When not writing or taking pictures, Jessica enjoys playing the piano. She also hopes to join the University newspaper, The Statesman,

next semester.

Jessica says that she began working for FSA because she wanted a job that would give her skills for the future, not solely financial

support. “What I thought I would gain as far as skills was participating in special projects, working with the people on campus,

networking, and understanding what it’s like to work in an office.” says Jessica. “I also learned about working as part of a team and

hearing other people’s perspectives.”

Aside from the experience she has gained, Jessica feels that she has gotten so much more from working in the Provost’s Liaison’s

office besides a paycheck. “I understand a lot more about how the Bookstore works on campus. I can use this information for my

benefit because I now know what is smart as far as buying books is concerned. I’ve also made some really cool friends.”

Book Review: “The Longest Ride”

If you can’t get enough of romance novels and are looking for the next instantclassic, be sure to pick up a copy of The Longest Ride for a story of hope in theface of disaster and loneliness.

The Longest Ride is the latest novel from the #1 New York Times Bestsellingauthor Nicholas Sparks, who also penned favorites like The Notebook and A Walkto Remember. The book follows 91-year-old Ira Levinson as he clings to life aftera deadly car crash, and also chronicles the romance between college studentSophia Danko and a young cowboy named Luke.

Sparks says on his website that the book is proof “that even the most difficultdecisions can yield extraordinary journeys: beyond despair, beyond death, to thefarthest reaches of the human heart.”

Like Sparks’ other novels, The Longest Ride does an excellent job of juggling bothlove stories and ultimately tying their journeys together. While the concept itself isreminiscent of some of his other novels, the message behind it remains aspowerful as ever.

The Longest Ride is now available at the University Bookstore. Get yourself a copytoday and don’t miss out on this endearing and heartbreaking tale of romance.

Faculty Spotlight on Angela Agnello

“I just get satisfaction out of seeing

students grow. I love having that

connection...I’m as proud of them as

if they were my own kids.”

Angela Agnello has a job that keeps her on her toes. From working with

students to holding meetings with campus managers and promoting events

around campus, Angela seems to be the go-to person for students and

faculty alike.

During her 13 years at FSA, Angela has done everything from teaching

freshman seminar classes to helping the University Bookstore teach

students about the many textbook buying options available.

“My job is a juggling act,” said Angela. “I’ve always worn many hats.”

As FSA’s Director of Marketing and Communications, Angela is constantly

working with members of the University Bookstore and the Provost’s

Liaison’s Office to keep students informed on new products, services and

opportunities available to them. A large part of her work with the bookstore

involves communicating to students the many options to buy textbooks on

campus, including new, used, rental, and e-books.

“I love working with the staff at the bookstore,” says Angela. “The

bookstore is always looking to give a better experience to their customers.”

In addition to her position with the Faculty Student Association, Angela has

also been teaching freshman seminar classes for 12 years. She is currently

teaching a technology course for freshmen in the ITS undergraduate college, where she hopes to help students understand the

importance of integrating technology into their studies. Besides the amazing projects that her students produce each

semester, teaching gives Angela the opportunity to connect with Stony Brook students and with the university as a whole.

“I just get satisfaction out of seeing students grow. I love having that connection,” says Angela. “I’m as proud of them as if

they were my own kids.”

Teaching has also helped Angela become a mentor to students working with the FSA. During her tenure at FSA, she has

worked with more than a half-dozen students who eventually took on roles as full time management trainees. Angela says that

working with student employees helps them to acquire new skills outside the classroom and get professional experience for a

world outside of Stony Brook.

“It’s about giving students the opportunities to connect with the university but it’s also a way to teach them about academic

success,” she said.

When she isn’t working at Stony Brook, Angela enjoys spending time with her husband and children, reading books, cooking

and watching movies.

“I like it here because I work with really good people,” said Angela. “We have a great relationship and we are able to

accomplish a lot under very tight deadlines.”

Complimentary Desk Copy Program

Complimentary Desk Copies

In 2009, the Provost’s Liaison’s Office with the cooperation of the UniversityBookstore introduced a new courtesy service for faculty and staff members toobtain free copies of textbooks for their classes by providing their course materialinformation for the upcoming semester. This has helped the University Bookstoreto obtain the necessary course materials forstudents to ensure that they are preparedfor each new semester.

We conducted a survey to measure thesuccess of the program in the Summer2013 and Fall 2013 terms.

Of the instructors who responded after theyreceived their complimentary desk copies, amajority of them were completely satisfied and claimed that this was one of theeasiest and most convenient ways to get desk copies for their classes.

The desk copy success story continued this semester with more than 240 courseinstructors ordering over 650 copies.
