Checking Out eBooks @ Your Library1/16/2012

Rebecca BrendelYuma County Library District

Yes, we have eBooks!

• Catalog is at http://yuma.lib.overdrive.com• Download from anywhere with Internet

access– For some devices you don’t even need a

computer! (I.E., “there’s an app for that”)• 5 books per card, 3 downloads per book– You can place holds on books that are “out”– Standard checkout time is 3 weeks– You can return books early

Can I get eBooks on my…?www.overdrive.com/resources/drc/

The Basics

• Search the library catalog for an eBook you want– Double-check it’s the format your device supports!

• Add it to your Cart• Log in with your library card # & PIN• Check the book out• From “My Bookshelf”, download the book– How you download depends on what you have…

Three basic procedures

• Kindles check out Kindle books and are redirected to Amazon’s website

• Nooks, Nook Simple Touch, Kobos, and Sony Readers check out Adobe ePub books and click-and-drag using Adobe Digital Editions

• iPads, Nook Colors/Tablets/HD, and Android tablets/smartphones check out ePub books and download the Overdrive Media Console app

• Pick up the relevant brochure!

I need extra software?!

• Sometimes! • Download it from the Overdrive website– Bottom left-hand column

• Nook Color/Tablet/HD users, visit www.bn.com and search for the “Overdrive Media Console” app

• Everyone who doesn’t have a Kindle needs an Adobe ID (sign up at https://www.adobe.com/account/sign-in.adobedotcom.html)

Let’s walk through a sample search!

• I hope to do a live demo but just in case, here’s the screenshot version….

Step 1. Find a good book

Step 1. Find a good book

Step 2. Check the book out

Step 2. Check the book out

You can click “Continue Browsing” to keep searching, but it will usually reset your search!

Step 2. Check the book out

- If your library card number starts with letters, you don’t need those! Numbers only.- Your PIN number is usually the year you were born (19XX).- If you can’t log in, call the library (928-373-6492). Once a year, cards get blocked so we can

check everyone’s contact information.

Step 2. Check the book out

Step 2. Check the book out

- You can always view what you have out under “My Account -> My Bookshelf”

If this were a Kindle title, this button would say “Get for Kindle” and would take us to Amazon’s website

Step 3 is different for different devices!

- Download the software you need from this sidebar- Reminder: Nook Color/Tablet/HD need to use B&N’s website!

- If you have the app, you’ll complete the process we just walked through via the app – not the browser! It’ll direct you to our website

-Let’s do a live demo using the Overdrive app on the Nook Color!

- For device-specific procedures from here out, please consult the brochures.

- If multiple people here have the same type of device, however, I’d be happy to set someone’s up after the presentation as an example!
