Imagine being trapped in a small town where nothing has changed since

your great, great grandfather built his home during the Civil War. That?s how it seems in Kami Garcia and Maggie Stohl?s novel, Beautiful Creatures.

Nothing ever happens in Gatlin County, North Carolina; it?s pretty much the middle of nowhere. At least, noth-ing ever happens to Ethan Wate. But the monotonous nothingness all changes with a dream. Ethan has been dreaming of a girl? literally? he has reoccurring nightmares of a girl slip-

ping through his f ingers and being pulled into darkness. That girl, Lena Duchannes, begins attending Ethan?s school. Lena is the school outcast; she doesn?t dye her hair blonde or tan.

To make matters worse, she lives with her uncle, Macon Ravenwood, the town shut-in. Although rejected by her peers for being dif ferent, Ethan f inds himself inexplicably drawn to Lena. But Lena, l ike many residents of the sleepy town of Gatlin, has a secret. Her family has been cursed. Can Ethan save Lena from the curse, or better yet, herself?

Beautiful Creatures is the f irst book in a f ive book series. It is a tale of fam-

ily t ies and sacrif ice, a tale of love, and a tale of discovering the power of your inner strength. Kami Garcia and Maggie Stohl magnif icently weave historical f iction, supernatural mystery, and young romance into the plot. There are many secrets to be discovered and sev-eral family mysteries to solve.

I particularly l iked the fact that the story is told from the male lead charac-ter?s perspective; all too often we see YA novels from only the female lead standpoint. This is a great series for YA historical f iction/high fantasy fans.

Book Reviews

Set in the f ictit ious South Louisiana town of Mudbug, cit izens become alarmed when FBI agents Raissa Bordeaux and Zach Blanchard meet the unexpected. Zach is beaten and left for dead while Raissa is kidnapped and taken into the deep swamps surrounding Mudbug. How could this happen?

Game Warden Jadyn St. James and Sherif f Colt Bertrand team up to solve the mystery behind these events. Solving the mystery isn?t easy when the FBI converges on

Mudbug and begins their own investigations. Jadyn, with the help of her cousin Maryse Robichaux LeJeune and Maryse?s ghostly ex-mother-in-law Helena, experience one hilarious adventure after another.

With twists and turns and a very unexpected ending, Jadyn and Colt solve the case of ?Missing in Mudbug.?

I recommend this thoroughly delightful and interesting novel and am excited to begin another of Jana DeLeon?s Mudbug mysteries.

The 2015 Summer Reading Program kicks off each year June 1, when people of all ages sign up for reading goals and summer programs.

This year, we're kicking off the SRP in a big way with veteran performer Frank Levy whose infectious love of theatre gets kids off their seats and acting up (in a good way) in this high-energy performance.

See Frank here:

- South Lafourche Branch: June 8, 10:30 a.m.

- Holy Savior Catholic School Cafeteria in Lockport: June 8, 2 p.m.

- Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center, Jean Lafitte National Historical Park & Preserve in Thibodaux: June 15, 10:30 a.m. & 2 p.m.

JiggleMan will also bring his comedic excellence to the library system this summer in July.

Children under age 9

Any child under the age of nine (eight years old or less) must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all t imes.

An exception exists for children attending a planned, scheduled library program without a parent or caregiver in the room. However, the parent or caregiver is expected to remain in the library building and join the child at the end of the program.

Children age 9 through age 11

Older children ages nine through eleven may need adult supervision to ensure their safety and to maintain appropriate behavior. Although they may be by themselves in the library a parent or caregiver must be in the premises at all t imes. Staff members will use their judgment and discretion in determining whether or not an unattended child needs a parent or caregiver for supervision.

The Right Word: Roget

and His Thesaurus

by Jen Bryant

Books were Peter?s friends. When Peter was eight years old, he started to write a book of his own entit led Peter, Mark, Roget, His Book. He didn?t write stories in this book, however, he wrote lists. He wrote lists of words to help him remember his Latin lessons. He wrote lists to name all the plants and insects in London?s parks. He wrote lists to try to f ind the right word to express his thoughts and feelings.

Peter grew up, studied to become a doctor, traveled around Europe, and worked on his lists. ?In 1805, Peter f inished his f irst big book of word lists. It had about one hundred pages, one thousand ideas, and listed more than f if teen thousand words! He kept it on his desk so that he could f ind just the right word whenever he needed it.?

This engaging book is packed with fascinating facts and intriguing il lustrations. Each page has opportunities for discovering hidden details. A ?List of Principal Events? gives a time line of Peter?s life. The back endpapers give a list of Peter?s original 1000 ?ideas.? Easy to read and understand, this book captures the reader?s interest until the very last page. Then you can go back and f ind the details that you?ve missed the f irst t ime around!

CAROLYN S.(& CHARLIE)

CIRCULATION MANAGER

Profiles of Lafourche Library Staff

Carolyn's face is l ikely one of the f irst friendly faces you'll see when you walk into the South Lafourche Branch.

The library's circulation manager, Carolyn has worked for the library since January 2004. Before then, she was a regular customer of and frequent volunteer at the library -- helping to shelve books and assisting with arts and crafts activit ies, so much so that she was asked if she'd like to apply when a job opening became available.

She did and was hired.

Everyone seems to know and love Carolyn, from the toddlers she works with while conducting Babytime to the older adults with whom she "shakes what your mama gave you" -- as she likes to put it -- during the line dancing classes that she leads. She enjoys the work, but she

especially enjoys greeting and assisting her customers.

Before that, she worked as a head cashier and off ice worker at a local grocery store, a job that also had her interacting with people on a daily basis.

"I really love to help people," she says of her work.

Some of Carolyn's other loves: two adult daughters Dana and Terry, many other family members, and two "sausage dogs" -- her Dachshunds Charlie & Ruby, both rescue dogs.

A reader, of course, Carolyn counts among her favorite books Richard Paul Evans' series The Walk and Richard Bach's Jonathan Livingston Seagull.

She is also an avid reader of inspirational books.

Watch out for an exciting new art workshop that pays homage to writer / il lustrator Ezra Jack Keats

& Louisiana artist George Rodrigue.

Thanks to a mini-grant from the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation, children and teens ages 5-16 can take part in a hands-on workshop where they will learn more about art and the artists who bring it to life.

Participants will bring to life their own interpretation of ?Curious Cajun Cat? who takes to

the city streets, bayou sides, parade-routes and other well-known Louisiana landscapes.

Participants' paintings will be featured in an art exhibit open to the public.

I?m not a scrapbooker.

I have a scrapbook, but my idea of scrapbooking involves taping postcards and concert tickets into it and then writing the date and with whom I was with.

I?m not crafty. If I affix something to a scrapbook, I consider it an accomplishment. Mostly, I just slide stuff between the pages and leave it there for a few years. (Oh, yeah, my scrapbook is the paper page kind. Very retro.)

But this time, this trip was different. I just returned from my ?trip of a lifetime?? England and Scotland, and, yes, to Haworth, the home of the Bronte sisters, my dream destination for the past twenty-something years. So I thought: I should scrapbook this and actually try to make it look nice.

I didn?t know what that would involve, except for a quick visit to a craft store to hunt down a scrapbook and a couple of sticker sets, those focusing on London landmarks, thinking that would be sufficient.

I had $40 in cash with me, which I again thought would be sufficient. After an hour and much more than $40 charged to my credit card, I forced myself to leave.

I got a scrapbook and some stickers, yes, but also things that I never dreamed existed or would ever purchase:

- Washi tape (huh?) with the Union Jack flag on it;

- Victorian-looking paper clips with flowers on them, thinking they reminded me of Charlotte Bronte and that their use would become apparent later.

- Mod Podge Paper, thinking I could use it as matting.

- A miniature map of the British Isles from the hobby section that I was sure would add a nice 3D touch somewhere.

- I'm not even sure what else.

I?ll spare you an exhaustive list, but the point is, ?Who knew??

I didn?t know much when I embarked on this scrapbooking project.

I didn?t know, for instance, after having used a scrapbook with paper pages in it for the past few decades, that there is specialized scrapbook paper to embellish and cover with memories that you slide between clear protective coverings.

I didn?t know I?d be spending my evenings, sometimes until 1 a.m., hunched over a scrapbook page, searching through trip photos, postcards, museum tickets and the like, intent on

preparing the perfect layout.

I never knew the perfect layout existed.

I never cared.

There?s still a lot I don?t know, like how I?m going to use those Victorian-looking paper clips that still remind me of Charlotte Bronte.

But there are a few things I?ve come to understand.

I realize now that real scrapbooking is a challenge and that if you do it well, it can be really rewarding.

More importantly, though, I realize that my desire to scrapbook is an attempt to hold onto my trip for just a little longer: in a way, to still be immersed in it somehow because it means so much to me.

I realize that a scrapbook isn't just a repository for holding old stubs, as I'd previously used it, but for retaining memories.

It's worth more than $25 price tag.

It's priceless.

The Island of Dr. Libris, by Chris Grabenstein

Besides the security cameras everywhere, there?s Dr. Libris?s private bookcase. Whenever Billy opens the books inside, he can hear sounds coming from the island in the middle of the lake. The clash of swords. The twang of arrows. Sometimes he can even feel the ground shaking. It?s almost as if the stories he?s reading are coming to life! But that?s impossible . . . isn?t it?

Dr. Critchlore's School for Minions: Book 1, by Sheila Grau and Joe Sutphin

No student is prouder to be at Dr. Critchlore?s than Runt Higgins, a twelve-year-old werewolf. But not everyone loves Dr. Critchlore?s as much as Runt. After a series of disasters, each worse than the next, it?s clear that someone is trying to shut the school down. It?s up to Runt, who knows the place better than anybody, to f igure out who?s behind the attacks . . . and to save his home, and Dr. Critchlore himself , from total destruction.

My Life as a Gamer, by Janet Tashjian and Jake Tashjian

Derek Fallon gets the chance of a lifetime--to participate in a gaming company focus group and to test out a new video game called "Arctic Ninja." Together with his friends Carly, Matt, and Umberto, Derek thinks his gaming talents will be showcased. But he soon realizes that everyone has got him beat, including whiz kid El Cid. On top of that, school reading tests have begun and Derek feels doubly off his game. Isn't there anything he's good at?

All his l ife, Call has been warned by his father to stay away from magic. If he succeeds at the Iron Trial and is admitted into the Magisterium, he is sure it can only mean bad things for him. So he tries his best to do his worst - and fails at fail ing. Now the Magisterium awaits him. It 's a place that's both sensational and sinister, with dark ties to his past and a twisty path to his future. The Iron Trial is just the beginning, for the biggest test is stil l to come . . .

From the remarkable imaginations of bestselling authors Holly Black and Cassandra Clare comes a heart-stopping, mind-blowing, pulse-pounding plunge into the magical unknown.

After their home burns down, fourteen-year-old Nick, his younger brother, and their father move into a ramshackle Victorian house they've inherited. After getting rid of the odd antiques in a garage sale, they discover that all of the objects have extraordinary properties. Nick f igures out that the attic is a strange magnetic vortex, which attracts all sorts of trouble. It 's as if the attic itself has an intell igence . . . and a purpose.

Ultimately Nick learns that the genius Nikola Tesla placed the items-his last inventions-in the attic as part of a larger plan that he mathematically predicted. Nick must retrieve everything that was sold at the garage sale but the task is fraught with peril-in addition to the dangers inherent in Tesla's mysterious and powerful creations, a secret society of physicists, the Accelerati, is determined to stop Nick.

Fans of intrigue, action, humor, and nonstop surprises are guaranteed a read unlike any other in Tesla's Attic, Book One of the Accelerati Trilogy.

The purpose of Men's Health Month is to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys.

Men's Health Week, from June 15-21, gives health care providers, policy makers, media, and individuals an opportunity to encourage men and boys to seek regular medical advice and early treatment for disease and injury.

There are a number of steps you can take that will go a long way toward minimizing your chances:

- Don?t smoke. Smoking causes 90% of lung cancers and greatly increases the risk of cancers of the mouth, kidney, bladder, pancreas and esophagus.

- Limit alcohol to two drinks a daymaximum.

- Limit your exposure to sunl ight . A

litt le bit of exposure will stimulate your body to produce vitamin D, which researchers think may reduce the risk of a number of cancers. But too much can cause skin cancer.

- Eat a low-fat , high f iber diet with lots of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

- Limit foods that are smoked, sal ted, pickled, or high in nit rates (such as hot dogs and luncheon meats). These foods are associated with increased risk of stomach cancer.

- Limit your exposure to PVCs (poly vinyl chloride), tar and creosote (a dark brown or black f lammable tar deposited from wood smoke on chimney walls). These are linked with a number of cancers, including cancer of the liver and skin.

- Get screened as recommended. These tests are designed to detect certain

types of cancer (such as colon, bladder, kidney, testicles, prostate) in their earliest stages. Caught early, these cancers can be treated successfully.

- Take aspirin. Some recent research indicates that people who took aspirin 16+ times a month were 40% less likely to get several types of cancer.

TIPS FOR NATIONAL MEN'S HEALTH MONTH

JUNE IS NATIONAL SAFETY MONTH

National Safety Month raises awareness of what it takes to stay safe at home, at work, and on the road. Observed annually in June, it focuses on reducing leading causes of injury which include:

- Motor Vehicle Crash- Poisoning- Falls- Choking- Drowning- Fires & Burns

The National Safety Council recommends these tips to be safer and prevent injury at home:

- Assign one family member to learn f irst aid and CPR.

- Program the poison control number, (800) 222-1222, in your home and cell

phones.- Remove clutter, small furniture, pet

gear, electrical cords, throw rugs and anything else that might cause someone to trip.

- Arrange or remove furniture so there is plenty of room for walking.

- Secure carpets to the f loor- Wipe up spills immediately- Have an emergency kit in your car and

at least three days of food and water at home.

- Be sure to store all important documents ? birth certif icates, insurance policies, etc. ? in a f ire-proof container.

Choking hazards for children include food, toys and household items. Signs of a choking child include: dif f iculty breathing,

a weak cry or cough, bluish skin color, loss of consciousness or inability to make a sign/high pitched sounds while inhaling. To prevent choking in children, keep small objects out of reach, cut food into small pieces and keep hard candy away from children.

The NSC suggests keeping these items in your car in case of emergency:

- A properly inf lated spare tire, wheel wrench and tripod jack

- Jumper cables- Tool kit and/or a multipurpose util ity

tool- Flashlight and extra batteries
