I was recently chosen to mentor at an event that challenged creative(s) - comprising of software / app developers, creative professionals and business individuals – to solve socio-economic problems through generating tech-oriented solutions in Nairobi, Kenya.
The excitement, exchange of ideas and leveraging of knowledge were cues that highly impressed me not forgetting the tenacity of these individuals that I witnessed amongst the six groups that were present.
The event comprised of two days of developing solutions through the use of creativity mixed with business sense by utilizing available technology, whereas the last day was dedicated to pitching solutions to a judging panel consisting of affluent private investors, equity firms and creative curators.
Considering such crop of participants are well versed with technology and creativity, I however saw room to encourage “sealing the deal” type of presentation skills that can harvest greater interest from the panel in creating a “buy-in” for the idea in question.
Here is my take on the essential skills (main themes identified during the session) that I thought are key at such events:
Convince yourself to convince others. You may find individuals having the idea framework but may not be able to sell “belief” in the solution. This is evidenced at times with fidgety body language, space gazing, and poor moderation of tone and consistent assurance of the scenario.
The less informative the slides, the more attention you get.You do not want judges to be put off at the first instance by noticing clutter in your slides, limited spacing and being informative to the extent of annoyance. The less information you project, the better avenue to sell your proposition.
Being precise to create “buy-in.”Individuals may express a scenario, instance or a competitive statement in words that are far too many. You do not want to have the judges asking you to explain at the end from square one! It is important to maintain brevity for presentations.
Utilizing floor space with appropriate body language.Moving too much around too frequently together with flaring arms and gestures would intimidate the judges and the audience too. Nobody is interested to view you as a pendulum! You want to be composed, captured and in sync with your body and mind to best maintain body posture and moving across the floor / stage.
Capturing the best and necessary information. You do not want to include information or data that you are uncertain of as that is the primary element a judge or your audience will capture. Moreover, mixing information with numbers concerning costs, revenue or other components with graphics, benefits to capture the idea in detail by being comprehensive and concise.
The list can actually go on with exhausting all available cues for succeeding in presentation skills. But, as mentioned before, these are general elements that I observe from time to time at various events dedicated to entrepreneurial ideas and pitches.

Aches. Sniffles. Fever.Cold and flu season is in full swing. When
you’re sick, you just want to feel better in a hurry. There’s no cure for a cold or flu, but we’ve got a few home remedies that can help, from chicken soup (your
grandma was right!) to hot chile peppers.
Hot Tea with Honey
and LemonWhen you’re sick with a cold or the flu, drink
plenty of liquids to stay hydrated, and make sure
they’re hot. Black tea helps soothe a sore throat and chase away the chills with a good dose of virus-fighting interferon. Add a dollop of antioxidant-rich
honey and a squeeze of lemon for vitamin C.
Hot PeppersHot chilly peppers contain capsaicin, the compound that gives them their kick and acts as a decongestant
to help relieve a stuffy nose. Can’t stand the
heat? Mild bell peppers can help, too. They don’t
have capsaicin, but they’re full of vitamin C.
Orange JuiceCrave orange juice when
you’re sick? It’s full of vitamin C, which may help shorten a cold’s
duration of and work as a natural decongestant.
Aim for 500 mg of vitamin C four times a day. A cup of OJ has 124 mg. Other good sources of vitamin C include strawberries, tomatoes, and broccoli.
OatmealWhole grains, like oatmeal, contain
selenium, zinc, and beta glucan to help support your immune system
and fend off cold and flu infections. Add a generous
dollop of yogurt its probiotics may help keep a virus from settling into your respiratory system.
Chicken SoupGrandma was right a bowl of chicken soup
does make you feel better when you’re sick. This
time-tested remedy contains cysteine,
an amino acid that’s chemically similar to a bronchitis drug to help reduce inflammation. The salty broth also helps thin mucus, and the protein in
the chicken helps you produce disease-fighting
antibodies.
Garlic and GingerBoth garlic and ginger
can offer potent cold and flu relief. Garlic helps bolster your immune system to squelch an
infection, while ginger helps tame nausea. Add a little ginger and garlic to your chicken soup to boost its cold- and flu-
fighting power.
SteamThere’s a reason why you feel better after taking a hot shower or sit over a bowl of
steaming water with a towel draped over your
head. The steam shrinks the mucus membranes
in your nose and throat, and encourages mucus to drain, which helps ease a stuffy nose and
congestion in your chest.
Nasal Decongestant
SprayA nasal spray can help ease congestion. But
don’t overdo it. Using a nasal spray for more than
three days can cause a rebound effect with even
worse congestion.
EYE CENTRE LTD
Eye wear to suit every face.
Variety of designer frames and sunglasssesat a reasonable prices.
