Message fromTHE PRESIDENT

Welcome to the Sunway campus.

Leaders are vital. As the cliché goes, people join the company but leave to get away from the boss. Yes. Good leaders are hard to come by. Their DNA caninclude: sharp intellect; good people skills; superb energy; strategically curious; and personally humble. That’s a rare combination of talents. My experience points to favour the impression that leaders are first born, then, made. Ways have beendeveloped through coaching to unlock people’s potential, by helping themto learn how to learn. To develop the three core skills of leadership: influencing, improving, and listening. This art of self-discovery was first developed by the Greek philosopher Socrates and has since been renewed, in the belief that we are more like acorns, with all the potential to become a magnificent oak tree– given motivation, encouragement, and opportunity.

Good luck.

Message fromTHE SENIOR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Welcome to the Asia Leadership Youth Camp!

Sunway Education Group

Dr. Elizabeth LeeSenior Executive Director, Sunway Education Group

With innovation accelerating on a global scale, therapidly changing world is reshaping and changing the way we work, particularly the way we teach andinteract with our young people. As we welcome our newest batch of young leaders, I feel prompted to be a little creative in my message with a verse from thenot-so-new song, Katy Perry’s “Fireworks”.

Do you ever feel like a plastic bagDrifting through the wind, wanting to start again?Do you ever feel, feel so paper thinLike a house of cards, one blow from caving in?

Do you ever feel already buried deep six feet under?Screams but no one seems to hear a thingDo you know that there's still a chance for you'Cause there's a spark in you?

This song was released five years ago and emerged as a great hit which captured many young heartsespecially those with a desire to achieve greatness. You may disagree, but I feel that the lyrics of this song are an epitome of your true self today. There may be times that people underestimate youbecause of your age. Don't be discouraged. The fact that you have signed up for the Asia Leadership Youth Camp is reflective of the drive in you – you know that "there’s still a chance for you" – to outgrow yourself and take your place among the futureleaders of our nation.

The Sunway Education Group (SEG) and theJeffrey Cheah Foundation recognise this – theendless possibilities and potential in you as theleaders of the future. We are collaborating with the Asia Leadership Institute (ALI) once again to present you this five-day amazing and enlighteningAsia Leadership Youth Camp.

In this camp, you will meet and learn aboutLeadership from an impressive line-up of Harvard speakers and facilitators. Our wish is to helpimmerse you in the Harvard model of leadership and equip you with skills, courage and confidence. We aim to ignite the light in you and make you shine. In time, we hope you will rise to be a leader who will be able to light up our future like fireworks.

I wish you a fruitful and enriching learningexperience at Sunway International School.

Thank you and God bless.

Message fromTHE PRESIDENT

Dear Delegates,

Asia Leadership Institute,Center for Asia Leadership Initiatives

Samuel KimAsia Leadership InstituteCenter for Asia Leadership Initiatives

As President of the Asia Leadership Trek at the Asia Leadership Institute, I am honored to welcome you to this program. This program marks the fourth time we have visited Sunway University and we will ensure to make it the best one yet.

Our theme for this year’s high school program, "Values Into Action," stems from the rationale that every individual must embark on one's own learning journey that can help him or her examine one's own values. It is only then that their true character and calling can begin to emerge. Success also means that when we face the challenges in our life – personal, professional, or communal – that we always have the unique opportunity to make adifference. We are able to turn downsides intoupsides and contribute to make our world a better place.

All of our fellows, from the Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard Graduate School of Education,Stanford Graduate School of Business, and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, have had the privilege of undergoing our own leadership journey by visiting communities across Asia. Through mentorship, inspirational stories onleadership, discussions on best practices, as well as capacity building workshops on the topics of change leadership and social-profit initiatives,

namely entrepreneurship, innovation in education, and social responsibility, we seek to humblycontribute to Asian communities' capacity to face and solve its challenges.

ALI's ultimate goal is to raise the most capable and ethical individuals; help organizations playleadership roles in their communities; anddisseminate world-leading best practices andinstructive tools. Our programs incorporate active learning models through the methods ofengagement, simulation, experience, and dialogue. I hope you take full advantage of this learningexperience and use it as a stepping stone to impact your own society in positive ways.

VALUES INTO ActionIntroduction

How will Malaysia’s young people lead in the 21st century?

High school students are at a juncture in which their decisions, attitudes, and habits play acritical role in shaping the rest of their lives. Those growing up in Malaysia face particularchallenges as their society evolves and foundational values face a more modern, global context. Leadership begins with self-awareness of one’s personality, character, and values. It thentranslates into personal growth and one’s ability to work with others to tackle commonchallenges whether it be in the family, school, or community.

“Values into Action” is the theme for the Asia Leadership Institute’s SummerFellowship Program 2015. The program has been designed and adapted for high schoolstudents, college students, new graduates, and young professionals and features workshops in leadership, public speaking, and practical skills; seminars on professional development and applying to overseas universities; as well as special talks and networking opportunities. Theprogram aims to prepare and empower young students for the leadership challenges they will face in their personal, school, and communal life, as well as help them translate theirvalues into action, and that action into meaningful and material value for others.

The Role of Rejection How It Saved Me $135,000 & Forever Changed My Life

The sting of rejection is seldom sweet. However, it's not always a negative experience and oftentimes crucial in the development of self. Sharing a series of true life stories, John Lee will speak on some of his biggest rejections and how it dramatically altered his life.

JOHN LEE

Thinking Creatively About Communications

Musicians are trained to be self-critiquing for their own individual improvement. When put with a group (chamber music, chamber orchestra, orchestra), the communication skills required forimproving the ensemble are balanced between a supportive / collegial environment and critique to improve upon a shared artistic vision. Furthermore, music provides a way to communicate without saying anything - by a gesture, nod, eye-contact, or musical phrase played a certain way, musicians use the art to communicate with one another. Building from ideas from theGroup Learning, Arts of Communication, and Public Narrative courses, the talk aims to provoke thinking about what defines effective communications, specifically the relationship between verbal speaking and interpreting non-verbal actions.

Designing Your Life

Why not apply the design thinking process to problems and concerns you have in life? Based off of the course from the Stanford design school, this talk will take a deeper look into what it means to design your life starting with optimizing partnerships to gratitude and mindfulness. The designprocess offers tools with which one can reframe their own concerns in order to better optimize their life outlook and choices. These tools aid in long term goal setting, career aspirations, and how toprototype on a daily basis.

CAMP AgendaWorkshop Series

Leadership Practice: Adaptive Leadership

Difficult problems that a student faces in group projects, on a sports team, or in any aspect in life, are often difficult to solve solely by the person in charge. It requires the creativity, commitment, and courage of everyone involved in the problem. In this workshop, participants will have understood the difference between technical and adaptive challenges – and have applied that to their owngrassroots experience and context; understood the difference between leadership and authority; have experienced how uncertainty often calls for authority while leadership is needed; and will have encountered some basic strategies on how to lead in uncertain situations. Using case materials and an experiential case-in-point methodology, this workshop will expose and train students to a powerful way of thinking and acting when addressing the leadership challenges in their life.

FATON LIMANI

Leadership Communications: Public Speaking

Effectively communicating as a leader means engaging those around you through the use of stories that binds and motivates people through common cause. It is firstly, a “story of self,” communicating who I am: my values, my experience, why I do what I do. Secondly, it is a “story of us”communicating who we are: our shared values, our shared experience, and why we do what we do. And lastly, it is a “story of now” articulating the present as a moment of challenge, choice, and hope. Based on research and courses conducted at the Harvard Kennedy School on the leadershipframeworks and communication techniques of the most effective leaders – this workshop trainsparticipants in essential leadership principles, while allowing them to practice provencommunication techniques, in the end equipping them with a powerful public narrative toolkit.

Leadership Practice: Transformational Leadership

“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate,”– Carl Jung. Self-awareness is the foundation for a fulfilling life, a growth mindset, and an effective leadership style. In this workshop, participants will learn how individual development, motivation, and mentorship can be tied together to improve leadership development. By identifying what isholding oneself back from achieving one’s goals, participants will also gain an awareness of one’s own values. Participants will undergo in-depth processes to understand oneself better. In theprocess, of improving and then transforming oneself, the participant will then learn how to undergo strategic conversations and work with others to undergo change. Participants will then gain anauthentic, transformational leadership outlook, approach, and style offering an opportunity totransform their own leadership path.

Innovation: Skills for the 21st Century Workplace

The 21st century has brought a new kind of workplace, in which individuals are encountered with complex, multidisciplinary, open-ended problems that don’t come in multiple-choice formats or ready-made standard solutions. Through lectures, strategic games, simulations, and casediscussions, this workshop will enable participants to learn the mindsets and practice the skills needed to walk into professional settings and tackle complex problems. Individuals will find ways to uncover the purpose and possibility hidden in problems; they will then learn steps to diagnose the group dynamics they are operating in; they will then learn how to strategically approach others with a mindset towards creating value rather than claiming value; lastly, they will deploy themselves through purposeful communications that mobilizes action.

JOHN LIM

Innovation: Design Thinking and Innovation

Design thinking is a practical and creative problem solving approach, with the intent of an improved future result. The approach, rooted in the most innovative companies of Silicon Valley, has beenapplied to products, services, spaces, and interactive experiences. Through interactive activities, discussions, and mini-projects, this workshop will not only give an overview of the design thinking process, but also have students learn by doing. They will understand that design should always start with the end user and then identification of the unique problem; create a reflection and conversation around the design process; get students to understand the value of the process; and develop a bias towards action. Participants should also experience that design is a constantly iterative process while touching on all five steps throughout the lifecycle.

JAYE BUCHBINDER

Practical Skills: Disciplined Entrepreneurship

When we think of entrepreneurship, we think of starting a business. But entrepreneurship begins as a way of thinking strategically about any challenge. This has been the starting point on how the most successful entrepreneurs have developed the most innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing problems. In this workshop, students will engage in case study discussions and lectures to build contextualized and experiential knowledge in aspects of entrepreneurship and intrapraneurship: mission and vision, positioning, funding and resources, as well as impact and measurement.Crucially, participants will develop relevant skillsets in these areas through hands-on activities and simulations. At the end of this workshop, participants will be better equipped to approach and lead a new entrepreneurial venture as an independent start-up or within a large organization.

MARTIN ATTIQ

INNOVATION AND PRACTICAL SKILLS

Practical Skills: The Practice of Negotiation

Negotiation is often thought of as being in the realm of political and diplomatic leaders. Butnegotiation is a skill for one’s everyday life. This workshop introduces the fundamentals ofnegotiation analysis and practice and will help participants develop a set of mindsets that will help them better analyze and prepare more effectively for any negotiation. Through participation insimulations, participants will have the opportunity to practice their powers of communication and persuasion, and to experiment with a variety of negotiation tactics and strategies. The aim of the workshop is to provide the participant with a set of concepts and tools that they can applyimmediately, in effect, helping them to approach situations in personal and professional life moreintentionally and intelligently.
