Let's introduce Nmes!

but where is Nmes actually?

Nmes is located in the South of France, it is about 40 kilometers far from the Mediteranean Sea.

Nmes was created more than 2OOO years ago around a divin source (located in les jardins de la Fontaine that you will probably visit). Nmes became one of the most important Roman colony because it was a huge crossroads of commercial and cultural exchange. Nmes was at its height in the time of the Emperor Auguste. Furthermore, the oldest and better preserved monuments of the city date back to Auguste's reign. Nmes suffered during the religious war, but fortunately at the end of the Middle Age, the city knew a booming mainly thanks to its textile industry. Many private mansions were built which hide beautiful achitecture as inside as outside. Nowadays its numerous inhabitants and its large surface contribute to make Nmes a very attractive city which suggests the existence of many activities such as sports, theatre, music, arts in general. All of that is possible thanks to Nmes' theatres and cinemas, but also to its olympic-size swimming-pool Nemausa and its new auditorium : Paloma. Moreover the city has recently developped another means of tranport: the trambus which helps people to gain time. They mainly use it to avoid traffic-jam. Thanks to that it is up to them to let their car which often represents a burden when you work in a big city.

Les Arnes de Nmes

Les Arnes were built at the end of the first century to entertain Nimois people. During the Grandes Invasions, it was used just to protect Nmes' inhabitants. From the Middle Age until the xix' century, les Arnes became an authentic district full of streets, shops and pubs. Then, les Arnes were upgraded to host the famous courses de taureaux. They totted up more than twenty corridas and courses camarguaises that are games with toros, sometimes it can go until the beast's death. Many events take place in les Arennes such as concerts-on-air, festivals, and so on). But, if you do abstraction of these events, the construction hosts thousands of tourists each year, many guided tours are organized and it is never empty.

La Maison Carre

LaMaison Carre is a roman temple which was built at the beginning of the first century in Nmes. La Maison Carre is dedicated Lucius Caesar and Caius Julius Caesar who were Auguste's grandsons. In the course of centuries, the temple has become a consular house, then a church and finally a museum. It is one of the most preserved roman temples of the world. In 1993, le Carr d'Art, a huge library was constructed in front of La Maison Carre. Many students go there to study during their free-time. Sometimes, there are some kind of exibiotions inside.

Les Jardins de la Fontaine

Les Jardins de la Fontaine are located on a hill located right in the middle of the town centre. It is a wonderful historical garden where several roman architectural styles coexist. Its creation started during the Enlightenment, in 1745. The aim was bringing out the source and the roman remains that were previously discovered. Les Jardins de la Fontaine represent a nice place where people like to go with their friends or family. It is not so far from our school so you will probably go there for a walk.

Le Temple de Diane

Le Temple de Diane is a Roman monument. This building dates back to Auguste's era but the faade was modified to be fitted to different needs. In the Middle Age for exemple, many monks lived there. Nowadays, le Temple de Diane is connected to Les Jardins de la Fontaine. Infornately, I can't tell you more because its first fonction and origins are still controversial.

Le Pont du Gard, walking on our ancestors' feet...

The Nmes aqueduct was probably built in the first century of our era, as evidenced by the ceramic. The zone was refurbished, some stones of the bridge were changed and a museum was contructed on one of the banks. The site hosts thousands of people from every part of the world. It is a very famous place where you easilly feel at home.

Moreover, every year, on summer the Pont du Gard is enlighten and in the early July is organised a concert next to the Pont du Gard with many popular guests.
