First of all, praise the Almighty God who has given His grace to all of us.

I would like to say thank you for entrusting us to accept all of you as the exchange

program students in Hasanuddin University, Makassar.

AMSA Hasanuddin University was born on September 22nd, 2002 in Makassar and had

been active as a member of AMSA Indonesia since 2003. Since its establishment, AMSA

Hasanuddin University has been entrusted to host the national events until now, such as

National Conference and National Work Meeting AMSA Indonesia. AMSA Hasanuddin

University had also gained recognition as the Best AMSA University in AMSA-Indonesia

version. So, we think this is the right time for us to take our organization progress to a

higher level by hosting this Asian Medical Students Exchange Program (AMSEP) with AMSA

Philippines, and we are truly honored for the trust that had been given by AMSA

Philippines to us.

Last but not least, we hope you enjoy your stay in Makassar and we will try to give our best

H I S T O R Y Asian Medical Students’ Association Indonesia (AMSA-Indonesia) is the peak representative body for medical students in Indonesia. Founded in Yogyakarta, August 10th 1996, AMSA-Indonesia has been actively participating in plethora of national and international events. Its contributions to AMSA International as the root of the organization are succinct, having hosted four Asian Medical Students’ Conference (AMSC) in 1990, 1996, 2003, 2010 and one East Asian Medical Students’ Conference (EAMSC) in 2006.

H A S A N U D D I N U N I V E R S I T Y (Indonesian: Universitas Hasanuddin, Unhas) is one of the biggest stated-owned universities in

Indonesia, based in Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi province. The university was established in

11 June 1956, named after Sultan Hasanuddin, a King of Gowa Kingdom. Before the official launching by

the first vice President of Indonesia, Dr. Mohammad Hatta, there had been in Makassar a faculty of

economy of Indonesia University,centered in Jakarta. This faculty is later known as the seed of

Hasanuddin University. Now, Hasanuddin University currently has 15 faculties, 59 undergraduate

programs, and 32 post-graduate program.

The Medical Faculty of Hasanuddin University was established on 22 October 1953, based on the decree of the Indonesian Government. On 28 January 1956, the Minister of Education officially named this institution Fakultas Kedokteran Makassar (the Medical Faculty of Makassar) that then turned into the Medical Faculty of Hasanuddin University when the University was established. On 31 December 1963 the faculty graduated 4 medical doctors. Now the Faculty has changed a lot.

AMSA Hasanuddin University itself was founded in 2002 by three founders: dr. Yose, dr. Akhpar, and dr.

Dimas. The observers just needed 6 months to accept AMSA Hasanuddin University as member of AMSA

Indonesia. In 2004, our members were accepted as a board in AMSA Indonesia and in 2005, as a board in

AMSA International. AMSA Hasanuddin University has been developing very fast until its member

achieved 479 right now.

ACTION. As medical students, we are concern to the community around us and try to do something to

make their life and health better.

O R G A N I S A T I O N S T R U C T U R E

AMSA Hasanuddin University is led by a representative whom is assisted by a General Secretary, a

Treasurer, and five coordinators who are in charge of their each division as followed:

1. Academic Affair involves in all activities to promote the SCIENTIFIC philosophy of AMSA Hasanuddin

University.

2. Internal Affair involves in all activities to develop the quality of human resources in AMSA

Hasanuddin University.

3. External Affair aims to promote and publish AMSA Hasanuddin University and build up good

relationship organizations in order to maintain our FRIENDSHIP philosophy, and also to delegate

AMSA Hasanuddin University member to events of AMSA Indonesia and AMSA International.

4. Social Affair involves in all activities to promote one of our philosophy, ACTION, in order to improve

life and health of people around us.

5. Fundraising involves in all activities to raise fund in order to support programs of AMSA Hasanuddin

University.

HERE ARE SOME OF OUR HIGHLIGHTS PROGRAMS:

1. Open Recruitment 2014 This program is for recruiting new members for gaining more qualified human resources. We

have four steps of this program: Socialization, interview, AMSA knowledge class, and

Inauguration Camp (I-Camp) as the final step.

2. Academic Seminar This academic seminar aims to help people explore on the most important health issues of the

current situations. There are group discussions and lectures to get an ain-depth education.

3. Asian Medical Students’ Exchange Program (AMSEP) This program is for joining AMSEP from national work plan through AMSEP Challenge or Bidding

for Hosting the AMSEP and running the event itself.

4. Social Effort for Children (SOFTEN) A program where AMSA Hasanuddin University giving a care to the orphanages in Makassar. This

program activities are English language and self hygiene teaching.

5. Merchandise AMSA Making and selling of AMSA Hasanuddin University’s accessories.

ormerly called Ujung Pandang, the city of Makassar is the largest city in east Indonesia. Located on the busy trading route along the deep Straits of Makassar, the city of Makassar is a bustling cosmopolitan town with settlement of many races and ethnic groups of Chinese, Europeans, Javanese, Balinese, Ambon and others. Today Makassar is also a university town, where youth from all over the islands, especially from the eastern archipelagos gather to gain higher education.

Makassar is a multi-ethnical city, most are Makassar and Bugis people, the rest from Toraja, Mandar, Buton, Tionghoa, Javanese, etc.

G E O G R A P H Y

In South Sulawesi, Indonesia. 0°12’-8° South latitude and 122°36’ East Latitude. This province is abuting Central Sulawesi and West Sulawesi on north, Bone Gulf and southeast Sulawesi on East, Makassar strait on west, and Flores sea on south. The shape of this island is very unique as it resembles the letter ‘K’, makes people call it ‘The K-shaped island’. Sulawesi is th world’s eleventh largest island in the world, covering an area of 174,600 km2. The island is surrounded by Borneo Island to thw west, by the Philippines to the north, by Maluku to the east, and by Flores and Timor to the south.

Mostly using Bahasa Indonesia with Makassar dialect Sulawesi Island is one of the five biggest islands in Indonesia.

C U L T U R E S Tari Kipas Pakarena (Pakarena Fan Dance): As the art expression for promoting Sulawesi Selatan. In local language, “pakarena” comes from “karena” means “visit”. This dance express the softness of women that polite, faithful and obey to men, especially to their husband.

Baju Bodo’ is a traditional clothes for women and Lipa’ Sabbe is silk sarong that used as skirt, usually it has a plaid pattern. As for men, they use long-sleeved formal suits with sarong (lipa garusuk) and cap (passapu). These clothes usually used for marriage or attending traditional event.

Paduppa Dance is a Bugis-Makassar traditional dance that performed to welcome the guests. It shows Bugis people politeness, open to the globalization but still keeping their culture as Bugis ethnic.

H A N D I C R A F T S Tenun Makassar Is a clothing material with typical pattern of Makassar. It is usually made by hand, but nowadays they have machine to produce Tenun. The word ‘Tenun’ itself means weaving, and so the process of making Tenun is using weaving system. We usually find this kind of craft in souvenir store. In Makassar, the store basically located at Somba Opu street. There are many various kind of wooden craft. We can find it as keychain, miniature, or even statue. The typical form from Makassar and most well-known is Phinisi Ship, it’s a traditional ship for Bugis people for sailing.

A famous literature from Makassar and usually performed in drama.

The epic La Galigo tells about how the gods came down to Luwu in

South Sulawesi and created a kingdom here, and then continues

further to tell the story of the following generations. While the

drama performance takes the episode where prince Sawerigading,

falls in love with his

beautiful twin sister We Tenriyabeng, who were separated from each

other since birth, because it had been predicted that the two would

meet and fall in love. Fate somehow brought them together, and

indeed they did fall in love. However, to avoid incest, Sawerigading

was forced to marry another woman.

F o r t R o t t e r d a m This fort is a historical artifact of the

greatness of the past kingdom in South Sulawesi. Viewed from the

sea, the kingdom of Makassar during that period was an area that

was completely fortified. In year of 1967, when Gowa, the strongest

and the most glorious kingdom during the 17th century, was under

the power of Dutch, all forts was destroyed except Fort Rotterdam.

During the period, the ford and its area started to be the center of

governmental and commercial activity. During the Japanese

colonialism, the fort functioned as the center of agricultural and

language studies.

The Old Graveyard of King Tallo These old tombs located in

the northern part of Makassar City. Formerly, Tallo Kingdom was an

area ruled by Gowa Kingdom. The kingdom was later divided into

two major divisions since the king had two princes which both

ambitious to become the next king. The two kingdoms are: Tallo

and Gowa.

Paotere Harbor is the place to anchor the sailing boat of people

coming from all part of Indonesia. The sailing boat anchored there

varied in styles and shapes. It is even more beautiful and

fascinating during the sunset with its colorful rays.

The Graveyard of Prince Diponegoro Prince Diponegoro was

the prince from the oldest kingdom in Java, who let the struggle

against the Dutch. He was eventually caught through a trick and

was later moved back to Makassar where he was first arrested. His

tomb build in the family graveyard preserved and seriously cared. It

was build with the Javanese tombs.

C U L I N A R Y Mostly, culinary in Makassar is full of spices and taste better with lime, especially for the main course.

Makassar culinary is so well-known within the nation also become the tourist favorite.

Jalangkote

A cake that filled with carrot, potato, bean sprout, and soun (white noodle). Shaped like half circle with unique folded shape on top. Served with chili sauce

Burasa’ Food consisting of rice steamed in a banana leaf. Made of rice that boiled with coconut milk. We can eat it plain, with dried coconut, or with main courses like Coto Makassar and else.

Gogos Just like Burasa, but Gogos is not steamed but baked. Usually filled with fish and vegetables. Just like Burasa, but Gogos is not steamed but baked. Usually filled with fish and vegetables.

Coto Makassar Like soup, but rich of spices. Consist of the soup itself and beef.

Mie Kering Deep fried noodle, gives a crispy texture. Served with chicken or seafood, fried meatballs, and vegetable in delicious gravy.

Nasi Goreng Merah Red fried rice in English. The difference from other fried rice is, this fried rice cooked with special tomato sauce that gives the red color to the rice.

Sop Konro

Konro soup is cooking beef ribs soup special that comes from traditional Indonesian Bugis and Makassar. This soup is usually made with beef or beef ribs.

Kapurung The texture is sticky, made from palm flour. Cooked with fish or beef and vegetables.

Pisang Ijo Made from Banana that covered with green colored skin made from flour, coconut milk and pandan leaf extract. This dessert is the most favorite dessert of all.

Barongko Typical dessert from Bugis-Makassar. Made from banana that steamed in banana leaf with sweet taste. Usually steamed with jackfruit and coconut.

Sarabba The texture is sticky, made from palm flour. Cooked with fish or beef and vegetables.

called as “pisang epe. All the lucky delegates can both enjoying our traditional food and satisfy

their eyes by seeing the beautiful sunset of Losari Beach, Makassar!

Natural Beauty of Sulawesi

In Bantimurung and Rumah Kupu-Kupu at Maros, you can find the beautiful waterfall with

hundred butterflies fly around you. You can also breath the real air because of so many trees

around, enjoy the waterfall as well and even easily found so many beautiful spots for taking

picture in Malino.

Historical Monuments

To appreciate all efforts that had been done by the past heroes in order to get our independency,

Monumen Mandala, Monumen 40,000 Jiwa, and Museum Kota was built. From all of those

buildings, the delegates can learn more about the real history, how serious and how hard we got

our independency, what actually happened in that time, and what kind of lesson can be learned.

Balla Lompoa Museum

This is the reconstruction of Gowa Kingdom palace. The entire building is made of wood and

contains full of high historical value objects!!
