Join us for a great send off as the band prepares for the 2014 North West 3rd section championships in Cheltenham.

Martin Stephenson was born in Durham, in 1962. He formed The Daintees in his teens with the deliberate intention of showcasing a broad range of musical styles. His debut single Roll On Summertime was issued by Newcastle’s Kitchenware Records in 1982. Successful and critically acclaimed albums Boat To Bolivia and Gladsome, Humour & Blue followed over the next ten years, before Stephenson began to cut his ties with the mechanics of the mainstream music business.

The Searchers’ remarkable career continues. With such classic hits as Sweets For My Sweet;  Needles And Pins;  Don’t  Throw Your Love  Away; Sugar And Spice and When You Walk In The Room, they have contributed enormously to establishing the UK as the world’s leading nation in the music industry.

Their special ‘solo’ concert is a highly entertaining show and has been enthusiastically and warmly received throughout the world. Combined with anecdotes and reminiscences, this fully self-contained concert includes all their famous hits, plus many album recordings, B-sides and a selection of other collector and well known favourites.

Quadrophenia Night is a club night, live gig, theme night and tribute to the iconic movie, Quadrophenia. You can expect a big screen film show playing the movie throughout the night in the background; DJ Drew Stansall (Saxophonist from The Specials) spinning the best in ska, two-tone, ‘60s, soul and mod; live music from Manchester’s own Danny Mahon; headlining band, The Atlantic’s (ex

The Screening), playing hits from the film including Louie Louie, You Really Got Me, Green Onions, Da Doo Ron Ron, Be My Baby, My Generation, The Real Me 5-15, Bell Boy, etc; and a DJ to finish the night ‘til late!

The only other thing you need to know is the dress code: Handsome!

Happy Mondays headline FAC 51 The Haçienda’s return to Blackburn as The Haçienda takes over King George’s Hall. The Mondays perform their full live show in a rare club setting along with a soundtrack provided by many of The Haçienda’s finest DJ’s including Marshall Jefferson, Graeme Park, Jon Dasilva, Peter Hook and Herbie Saccani.

The party sees The Haçienda back in Blackburn for their first event in the town since 1991 when FAC 51 used to hold a Haçienda Blackburn residency at local club, Manhattan Heights.

With the town known as the birthplace of the legendary Northern warehouse

party scene in the late Eighties and early Nineties, Blackburn has consistently supported The Haçienda and the relationship between two is long standing so a great atmosphere to open up the shows is expected.

With The Mondays looking to mix up their best known material, album tracks and rarities from their extensive back catalogue, fans can look forward to a wide ranging set delivered by the original line up who have been touring to great reviews and reactions since they first came back together around two years ago.

This year’s festival still retains a Blues foundation and international flavour; it has been expanded to encompass a greater diversity of music. The awesome Chantel McGregor returns to headline, joined by five other top class acts in the line-up; Stevie Nimmo Trio, Erja Lyytinen, Grainne Duffy, Stray and The Spellkasters. This

will most definitely be a  festival to remember and one not to miss!

With this calibre of artist stepping on stage, festival goers can expect to see top class live performances and hear a range of incredible sounds with sets that incorporate Blues, Rock, R & B, Folk, Soul and Roots Music.

Right On Music, in associaton with The Agency Group, presents Funeral For A Friend with support from Goodtime Boys and The Hero Complex.

Over the course of a decade, Funeral For A Friend has changed British rock music forever. A bold, brave, yet undeniably true statement. The band’s journey, from hardcore roots and DIY shows in Bridgend to major label records and worldwide tours, has built a long and prosperous road that many home-grown bands from across the alternative spectrum have been travelling along ever since.

Hard to believe we know but it is true: Kirk Brandon has now been leading Spear Of Destiny for over 30 years. 2014 will see the release of the band’s 13th  studio album 31 (Thirty-One). Spear Of Destiny were formed in 1983 after the demise of Kirk Brandon’s post punk iconic rockers Theatre Of Hate. (Brandon had also, before TOH, been the main man in every punk rockers favourite band of that era, The Pack).

The current line-up of Spear is the longest serving to date and features Adrian Portas (New Model Army / Sex Gang Children), Craig Adams (Sisters of Mercy / The Cult / The Mission) and Mike Kelly (The Mission).

The Summer of 2012 saw Madchester legends, The Stone Roses, reform for a series of memorable shows, most noticeably 3 nights at Heaton Park in Manchester. The gigs are sure to go down in the memory as an I was there moment.

The Clone Roses are the closest thing you will find to recreate the look and sound of these shows. The band include all the classics in their set such as Waterfall, Made of Stone,

This is the One, and of course, I am the Resurrection. The Clones have been touring up and down the UK for over a decade, playing to sell-out crowds week in week out. The band’s attention to detail is admirable, from the clothes and instruments to the Manc swagger and stage mannerisms, while the musical and sonic accuracy of their performance is second to none.

Heaven 17 & Blancmange head out together on tour for the first time ever with The Tour of Synthetic Delights’

This will be a special night of Synthetic Delights. Heaven 17 and Blancmange – a marriage made in Heaven…. Which is better than a marriage made in blancmange (I think). The fans are going to have a night to remember

with two bands who fit perfectly together. The Tour of Synthetic Delights is going to be exactly that – Heaven 17 and Blancmange at their Synthetic best.

Stay after the show for FREE ADMISSION to our Ultimate Retro Party Night, Club Tropicana, which continues ‘til 3am!!!

The award-winning production Let’s Hang On takes you on a musical journey through the prolific career of one of the most successful bands of all time - Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons.

From the beginnings in the early ‘50s, the show takes you through hits such as Beggin’, Grease, Bye Bye Baby, Sherry, Take My Eyes Off You, December 1963 (Oh What a Night!), Working My Way Back To You, Walk Like A Man, Big Girls Don’t Cry, and many more, climaxing with a

spectacular finale with, of course, Let’s Hang On!

Having only last year been invited to the Royal Albert Hall by Frankie Valli himself, we are very proud to have the opportunity to present this recently revamped production which now features brand new sound, lighting and AV screens.

Definitely not a night to be missed!!

Lindisfarne was Tyneside’s best-loved band for over thirty years and The Lindisfarne Story is a celebration of the group’s music and achievements. The show is devised, written and performed by drummer/founder member Ray Laidlaw, and Billy Mitchell, front man for the final eight years of the group. Ray and Billy perform acoustic versions of Lindisfarne’s classic songs and tell the inside story of the group’s rise to fame that saw them one of the major British groups of the seventies.

The show is illustrated with personal archive photographs and describes their worldwide tours, festival successes and TV appearances, their triumphant return home and their unique relationship with Newcastle City Hall, venue for over 130 Lindisfarne performances. Enjoy hearing their biggest hits such as Lady Eleanor, Meet Me On The Corner, Fog On The Tyne, Run For Home, and discover the stories and inspiration behind their composition.

The Wedding Present’s oft-called ‘lost album’, Watusi, could also be called their ‘marmite’ album… it polarised opinion like no previous Wedding Present release. Watusi was the first time the band committed to their lo-fi pop sensibilities… bravely eschewing the usual snarling guitars.

Oh, and before you say that you’re one of those people who didn’t like Watusi

when it came out… think again! No other Wedding Present album comprises such an eclectic array of material, thoughtfully arranged and consistently strong: Spangle, Let Him Have It and Catwoman would all demand inclusion on a Wedding Present best-of. The band will be playing all 12 tracks from Watusi at this show.

Steve Strange is an iconic figure of the ‘80s. A true pioneer and one of the original new romantics. Close friends with David Bowie and Boy George, Steve has recently built up a strong relationship with Electro ‘80s.

Shortly after leaving punk band, The Photons, Steve Strange formed Visage with then Rich Kids members Rusty Egan and Midge Ure, and Magazine members Barry Adamson, John McGeoch & Dave Formula. The following year, Strange appeared in the video for David Bowie’s no.1 hit, Ashes To Ashes, a song which

helped to propel the burgeoning New Romantic fashion movement into the mainstream. The single Fade To Grey followed soon after and became a top 10 hit in the UK and topped the charts in several other countries.

In early 2013, Strange announced a new version of Visage featuring himself and former member Steve Barnacle, along with former Ultravox guitarist Robin Simon and vocalist Lauren Duvall. A new album, Hearts And Knives, was released in May 2013 (the first new Visage album in 29 years).

Due to phenomenal demand Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott have announced additional dates to their autumn tour.

These dates follow the sold-out success of Paul & Jacqui’s spring tour and also the release of the new album: What Have We Become, their first album since the multi-million selling days of The Beautiful South. The

record has been a massive success, both critically and commercially, going straight in the charts at Number three on release.

New single, Moulding Of A Fool, is a brilliant Northern Soul stomper, richly melodic and lyrically full of Heaton’s trademark wit and social observations and was released on 21st July.

Andy Fairweather Low’s pedigree is the stuff rock dreams are made of. He first came to prominence at the vanguard of the new youthful expression of music as the lead singer in Amen Corner. The ‘60s saw them clock up hit after pop hit. Songs such as Bend Me Shape Me, Hello Suzy, (If Paradise is) Half As Nice are internationally remembered to this day.

Their UK Autumn 2013 tour in support of the Zone O Tone was so well received that further early spring dates in 2014 were added in the UK and Germany. The band includes: Andy Fairweather Low – Guitar & Vocals, Dave Bronze – Bass & Vocals, Paul Beavis – Drums, Nick Pentelow – Sax & Clarinet.

Frank Zappa is one of the twentieth century’s most important composers. His works of more than eighty albums is by far the most voluminous and versatile of the entire generation rock – encompassing of course jazz as well as avant-garde and orchestral music.

To mark the twenty years which have passed since Frank Zappa’s untimely death on December 4 1993, a whole bunch of his most popular collaborators have re-banded to turn his multi-dimensional compositions from syllabus material at the music academies into blistering experiences in the world’s concert venues again.

The Band From Utopia, referring to Frank Zappa ‘s album, The Man From Utopia, was first to perform his music again after his passing. This was initiated by an invitational show at the Stuttgart Jazz Open which was televised in Germany. Now they call themselves Banned From Utopia, please the connoisseurs and convert the curious into dedicated fans. Having played on innumerable Mothers / Zappa albums, the musicians of this virtuoso fusion ensemble are performing classics from all eras, suffused with the authenticity of their deep Zappa history.

rOBErT nEwMan’S New Theory of Evolution

“He is the funniest comedian I have ever seen…A passionate, chaotically brilliant comedian.” The Sunday Times

Rob describes the 150 year controversy in evolutionary theory and explores how the latest science demonstrates that DNA is not destiny. From a Devil’s Orchard made by lemon ants, to female buffalo voting which way to go, from Prince Kropotkin escaping a Tsarist dungeon to altruistic vampire bats and Richard Dawkins’ postman wrestling naked, Rob Newman argues that cooperation drives evolution more than competition.

Rob said: “Natural history is so full of freaky facts that when you tackle the complexity, you find that there is a wealth of detail, oodles of oddity which lend themselves to comedy.”

“I am completely in awe of Robert Newman. Of his talent, his passion, his intelligence, and the way he turns them to comedy with real firepower. If this world could be saved by a Superhero whose Superpower was Comedy, that hero would be Robert Newman.” Kate Copstick, The Scotsman

A unique opportunity to see the man himself up close and personal before he embarks on a massive UK tour.

Punchline. Def: The final part of a joke, speech or funny story which is intended to provoke laughter or thought or both. Punchlines generally derive their humour from being unexpected - “Punch” indicating that the “Line” should always come as a surprise or shock. There is a large school of thought that suggests that very few Punchlines are inherently funny out of context. There is another school of thought (actually Dave’s

school of thought) that the opposite can be true. In this new show he will present evidence to support this. Examples include: - “Where do you want your blinds?” / “It’s not my dog” / “Isn’t that some kind of fancy liquor?” / That’s my Thermos flask”. Then of course there’s Nuns. Nuns in baths, Nuns on bikes and Prince Charles wearing a Fox hat. Dave will also argue that you don’t always need a Punchline for a joke to be hilarious and suggests that if you doubt him, you should ask the bloke with the big orange head next time you see him.

Based on the bestselling children’s classic by Jill Tomlinson.

Plop is a baby barn owl. He lives at the top of a tall tree, in a field. He is fat and fluffy. He has big round eyes and very knackety knees. Plop is exactly the same as every barn owl that has ever been - except for one thing. Plop is AFRAID of the DARK.

One day, Mr Barn Owl suggests that Plop fly down into the world and find about the dark for himself. And this is where Plop’s adventure begins... This gentle, reassuring tale is brought to life with an irresistible blend of music, puppetry and storytelling.

Written especially for small people aged 3-7, and grown ups who still sleep with the light on.

The Private misses the farm. The Captain dreams of painting. The Corporal relishes the fight. And a hundred years later, The Woman seeks to understand.

A startling new play about action, humanity, and the legacy of war. This astonishing production immerses

you in the reality of conflict in vivid, thrilling detail. It charts the experiences of a young farm worker serving on the western front, linking his story to a woman today, just home to her village after a tour of the battlefields. You’ll never walk past a war memorial in the same way again.

BBC phIlharMOnICRossini The Thieving Magpie: Overture Mendelssohn Violin Concerto Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 4

Diego Matheuz conductor | Veronika Eberle violin

Tonight’s concert is packed with some of the greatest tunes in the repertoire. Rossini’s famous overture, with its beautiful central melody and thrilling conclusion, is followed by a true masterpiece for the violin. Mendelssohn’s concerto has a lullaby slow movement and sparking finale, impossible to hear without smiling. It will be played by the young German violinist, Veronika

Eberle, who has already gained a reputation for technical brilliance and emotional depth. Our evening ends with Tchaikovsky’s mighty Fourth Symphony. Dominated by its great opening ‘fate motif’ this is a work that not only moves the audience from darkness to light, but completely overcomes the power of fate itself, ending in a blaze of joyful celebration.

Featuring an impressive cast and accompanied by a large live Orchestra with over 30 musicians.

After successful performance of Carmen last year, The Russian State Ballet and Opera House is back with another world-class Opera, Rigoletto - a tragic tale of misunderstanding, revenge and sacrifice.

Rigoletto is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi, set to an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, and

based on the play “Le Rois’amuse” by Victor Hugo.

Its tragic story revolves around the hunchbacked court jester, Rigoletto, his beautiful daughter Gilda he loves and the Duke of Mantua he serves.

Rigoletto is one of Verdi’s best-loved masterpieces, and is considered as standard repertoire. The opera includes the Duke’s much loved cynical aria ‘La donna e mobile’.

ThE halléBrahms Tragic Overture Bizet Carmen: Selection Butterworth A Shropshire Lad Sibelius Symphony No. 5

Sir Mark Elder conductor

Carmen, Bizet’s last and greatest work, was initially treated unkindly by some famously harsh critics, but is now rightly regarded as a masterpiece, with a wealth of wonderful, memorable melodies. George Butterworth was tragically killed in the Somme only four years after composing his pastoral orchestral

rhapsody A Shropshire Lad, an extended meditation on the poetry of A.E. Housman. Its dark undertones are also reflected in Brahms’s Tragic Overture, of which the composer said ‘I could not refuse my melancholy nature’. Perhaps, but this is also a piece with great power and majesty. The evening concludes with Sibelius’ Fifth Symphony, which emerged as Finland struggled for independence from Russia, and was immediately adopted as a patriotic symbol. This life-affirming and wonderfully optimistic work ends gloriously with what Sibelius called his ‘Swan Hymn’.
