Garritzmann, University of Konstanz & University of Zurich Silja Häusermann, University of Zurich Bruno Palier, Sciences Po Paris Local hosts and organizers: Hanspeter Kriesi Maureen Lechleitner Reto Bürgisser Purpose and format of the workshop: The main purpose of this workshop is to improve the chapters and the coherence of the two volumes that will be form the output of the project “World Politics of Social Investment” 1 . Hence, rather than having paper-givers “defend” their papers, the goal is to get as much feedback as possible on the individual papers and their contribution to the overall project. Thus, we have assigned two discussants for each paper and organized the conference following the structure of the two books. We cluster the discussion along the respective book sections and have assigned 45 min for each paper. In order to use this time most efficiently, we opted for the following procedure: Instead of having paper-givers present their own papers, a ‘paper discussant’ will provide a brief summary of the paper and critically comment on the chapter: paper discussants will have 12 min (max) to present and critically discuss the paper. Afterwards, a second, ‘section discussant’ will comment on all the papers in the respective section of the book (15-20 min), paying particular attention to the coherence of the section and the coherence within the volume (e.g., Do the papers contradict each other? What are broader lessons across the chapters?). After the section discussant’s comments, we will collect 1 (Almost) all chapters from volume I and the “regional chapters” on Latin America from volume II will be discussed at this workshop. The chapters on Europe and Asia (for volume II) will be discussed in separate workshops in Kyoto and Paris in June 2018.

Practical Information Taxi Florence airport is located 8 km from the center, approx. 20-25 minutes by taxi or bus. Taxis can normally be found outside the arrival terminal. There is a fixed rate of €22 (€24-25 weekend/night) from the airport to the center. The conference hotel, however, is outside the center and a taxi should cost approx. €30-40. Getting around by taxi in Florence can be quite expensive and you do have to know that taxis cannot be flagged down as they pass you along the street. Taxis are instead “stationed” at special taxi parking stands in most of the major squares and at the airport and they can be requested by phone. In Florence, the numbers for calling a taxi are: +39.055.4242 / .4390 / .4499. Airport Shuttle The airport is also connected to the main railway station (Santa Maria Novella) by a shuttle bus that leaves every 30 minutes and takes about 25 minutes. Tickets are available on board for € 6.00 (one way) or € 10.00 (round trip). This is the schedule of the shuttle:

Bus To get from Santa Maria Novella train station to the European University Institute (EUI) and the conference hotel (Pensione Bencistà), take buses 1, 6, 17 or 23 towards Piazza San Marco. In Piazza San Marco, take bus 7 towards Fiesole. For the EUI, get off at “San Domenico 01” (Attention: there are multiple stops called San Domenico, so please make sure to get of at 01). For the hotel, get off at “Regresso”. Bus tickets can be purchased from authorized sales points (bars, tobacconists, newsagents – anyone with “ATAF” stickers on their shop windows), from ATAF vending machines at Piazza San Marco and Santa Maria Novella and even from the parking meters. You should also be able to buy tickets at the conference hotel. A single ride costs €1.20 and is valid for
