DEMENTIA/ALZHEIMER’S KITS
Palo Alto City Library is excited to announce our new collection of Dementia/Alzheimer’s Kits, available for checkout at Rinconada Library. Research indicates that interactive and multi-sensory materials used with people with Dementia/Alzheimer’s promote positive results.
We have three different types of kits:
Memory Lane KitsThese kits contain music, photos/books, artifacts, cookbooks, conversation cards, and games from the 1940s, 1950s, or 1960s.
Memory Activity Kits These kits contain memory games, manipulative activities, reusable art projects, music CDs, photos/books, conversation cards and puzzles for Early to Mid, Mid to Late, and Late Stage Alzheimer’s/Dementia levels.
Caregiver KitsThese kits contain resources and information for caregivers including, books, consumable pamphlets on various aspects of Dementia/Alzheimer’s, and supplemental materials include topics such as self-care, stages of the disease, caregiver tips and strategies, as well as national and California resources.
All Dementia/Alzheimer’s Kits are funded in whole or in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the LSTA grant, administered by the California State Librarian.

ABOUTPalo Alto City Library is excited to participate in the California Center for the Book/California State Library Book to Action program! This grant-funded program expands the book club concept to create a dynamic series of events for adults and intergenerational groups centered on an issue that is important to the local community. From the book, we move to action with a service project designed to engage the community with the selected issue.
Our Book to Action series is based around the adult graphic novel, Wrinkles by Paco Roca. This at times funny and heart-wrenching story captures a snapshot of life with Alzheimer’s and humanizes a difficult topic.
Throughout July and August, we will be giving away copies of the book for free to patrons (while supplies last) and hosting a series of events throughout the month of August that are focused on creating understanding and empathy around aging, Alzheimer’s and dementia, and encouraging engagement and connection with the Seniors in our community.
Our service project will be centered on ameliorating isolation and loneliness for Seniors in our community through writing Letters of Love. We will be hosting a virtual event for teens to write letters for delivery to residents in care facilities, and hopefully developing lasting intergenerational relationships. We encourage anyone in the community to participate in our Letters of Love campaign, and consider offering your time to be a pen pal with care facility residents.
