Yom Kippur 5782

Memorial Meditations

To this sacred place I come, drawn by the eternal ties that bind my soul to the soul of my beloved.

Death has separated us.

You are no longer at my side to share the beauty of the passing moment. I cannot look to you to lighten my burdens, to lend me your strength, your wisdom, your faith.

And yet what you mean to me does not wither or fade.

For a time we touched hands and hearts; still your voice abides with me; still your tender glance remains a joy to me. For you are part of me forever, something of you has become a deathless song upon my lips.

And so, beyond the ache that tells how much I miss you, a deeper thought compels: We were together.

I hold you still in my mind and give thanks for life and love.

The happiness that was, the memories that do not fade, are gifts that cannot be lost.

You continue to bless my days and years.

I will always give thanks for you.

O God of life, amid the ceaseless tides of change which sweep away the generations, Your living spirit remains to comfort us and give us hope. Around us are life and death, decay and re-newal; the flowing rhythm that all things obey.

Our life is a dance to a song we cannot hear. Its melody courses through us for a little while, then seems to cease. Whence the melody, and whither does it go? In darkness as in light, we turn to You, Lord, the Source of Life, the Answer to all its mysteries.

Can it be that we, Your children, are given over to destruction, when our few days on earth are done?

Or do we live in ways we cannot know?

Only this have we been taught, and in this we put our trust: from You comes the spirit, and to You it must return. You are our dwelling place in life and in death. More we cannot say, for all else is hidden from our sight by an impenetrable veil. We thank You, then, for the life we have, and for the gifts that daily are our portion. For health and healing, for labor and repose, for the ever-renewed beauty of earth and sky, for thoughts of truth and justice that move us to acts of goodness, and for the contemplation of your eternal presence, which fills us with the hope that what is good and lovely will not perish, we give thanks.

Lord, what are we? A breath, a passing shadow. Yet You have made us little less than divine.

Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd,

I shall not want.

He makes me lie down in green pastures.

He leads me beside still waters.

He restores my soul.

He leads me in right paths for the sake of His name.

Even when I walk in the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil, for You are with me; with your rod and staff You comfort me.

You have set a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil, my cup overflows.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

On a Yahrzeit

The family gathers at dusk, on the eve of the anniversary of the death.

At this moment, which bears the memory of our beloved, [in-sert name], let us join hands in love and remembrance.

A link has been broken in the chain that has bound us together, yet strong bonds of home and love hold us each, to the other. We give thanks for the blessing of life, of companionship, and of memory. We are grateful for the strength and faith that sus-tained us in the hour of our bereavement.

Though sorrow lingers, we have learned that love is stronger than death. Though our loved one is beyond our sight, we do not despair, for we sense our beloved in our hearts as a living presence.

Suggested reading: Psalm 23 or another passage from the Bible or Prayerbook.

Sustained by words of faith, comforted by precious memories, we kindle the Yahrzeit light in remembrance.

The human spirit is the light of the Lord. As this light burns pure and clear, so may the blessed memory of the goodness and nobility of character of our dear one illuminate our souls.

Kindle the light.

Zich-ro-no (Zich-ro-na) li-ve-ra-cha. His (her) memory is a blessing.
