The 4th Asian Education Symposium (AES) Manado, 14-15 August 2019
Welcome Address
The Chair of the Organizing Committee
Nihta V.F. Liando, Ph.D.
Honorable Invited Keynote Speakers,
Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Welcome to the 4th Asian Education Symposium 2019. We are very delighted to have you all
participate in this international meeting of highly intellectual people from Asian region and beyond.
It is, indeed, a great pleasure for me to get the chance on behalf of the Organizing Committee to
officially welcome you all to the 4th Asian Education Symposium 2019 hosted by Pascasarjana
Universitas Negeri Manado.
As has been widely disseminated, the central theme of this conference is “Reconceptualization of
Education in the Disruptive Era”. Under this central theme, 132 abstracts have been selected
under rigorous review to be presented embracing various topics on education.
This seminar will present plenary speakers and parallel sessions. The committee has received a great
deal of interest through numerous abstract submissions, and under very strict expert reviews and
selection, papers for presentation have been determined based on degrees of relevance and
availability of time and space. Therefore, it is our hope that everyone could make their contribution
in some way or another. As has been the ‘tradition’ since the first AES, the proceeding of this
conference will be published in Atlantis Press and submitted for further indexing to Scopus and
Thomson Reuters.
Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen,
To end, I would like to express my gratitude to Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia and fellow members
of the Consortium who have given us, Pascasarjana Universitas Negeri Manado this great opportunity
of collaboration to host this year AES. To fellow organizing committee for their hard work during the
preparation and the conduction of this seminar, I would like to thank you all for making this event a
reality. And to the presenters, I would like to wish you the best in your presentation, the best in
sharing ideas, the best in benefiting from this highly intellectual occasion, and the best in establishing
networking. God bless us all.
Thank you.

A Message from the Director of School of Postgraduate Studies
Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia
Assalamu’alaykum Warrahmatullaahi Wabarakaatuh.
Invited speakers, Distinguished Guests, Presenters and Participant of Asian Education Symposium.
It is with great honor I welcome you all to the Asian Education Symposium 2019 (AES 2019). Taking
“Reconceptualization of Education in the Disruptive Era” as its main theme, this conference is one of
our attempts to promote collaboration among universities and to provide a space for networking
among academics and researchers in education. For countries in Asian region, education is a vehicle
that can move people’s mobility. As now we are facing Asian Economic Community, there is a strong
need to develop collaboration and partnership among countries both at regional and international
level. It is our hope that the conference will contribute to the development of education as a distinct
body of knowledge. At the same time, it is our hope that the conference will enable the universities
to be recognized internationally.
This conference provides a platform for us to disseminate and discuss our research finding. It is our
expectation that the conversation from this conference will inform policy and practices of education
and this event will open up future research on Education while at the same allowing all participants
expanding their network. Hopefully, all the participants will be engaged in fruitful and meaningful
discussion.
I also would like to express my gratitude to all the keynote speakers who have travelled to our
country to deliver and exchange their ideas. My appreciation also goes to all the committee members
who have worked hard to make this event possible.
Once again, I wish you all a productive conference.
Best regards,

Quality and Equity of Student Performance in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand,
Vietnam, and Australia
Education has long been acknowledged as one of the key factors in enhancing both social and economic wellbeing and is receiving increasing amounts of attention and priority in many countries
around the world, including those in the Southeast Asian region. Nearly every country in this region is investing extensively in education since the 1990s. However, not all countries in the region have
managed to improve the practice and effectiveness of their education systems over the past two decades. Students in Singapore have consistently shown superior academic performance in various
international assessment programs, including the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Students in
Indonesia, on the other hand, have the lowest average scores in PISA 2015.This study focuses on assessing the quality and equity of student performance with respect to 15-year-old students in PISA
2015 from five participating Southeast Asian countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore,
Thailand and Vietnam as well as Australia. In addition, this study addresses the complex issues
involved in making comparison between countries in the levels of performance of the 15-year-old students.

Revolutionizing the University?
Higher Education in the Era of “Industry 4.0”
The purpose of this presentation is to lend the sociological voice to dissect the ongoing proliferation of the “Fourth Industrial Revolution” or Industy 4.0 in the university. With a set of appealing
advantages, the Fourth Industrial Revolution is taking off in the manufacturing sector in Asia, and will rapidly transform the economy and business within the next decade. This presentation is
predicated on the notion that while technological progress underpins the Fourth Industrial Revolution, technologies are anchored with social, cultural, and political contexts characterized by
power struggle, contestation, and compromises. This presentation addresses how the formation of Industry 4.0 entails revolutionary transformations in higher education. It critically examines the
origin and meaning of Industry 4.0 to understand the gap between the concept of Industry 4.0 and the realty in high education especially in emerging economy such as Indonesia. In conclusion, the
presentation presents an alternative trajectory for middle-class universities to remain competitive in
the digital era of learning and teaching.

Cyclic Reflective Model for Promoting Prospective English Teachers’ Creativity in
Instructional Designing Luh Putu Artini, Ni Nyoman Padmadewi
Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha
Abstract Creativity is one of the 21st century learning skills that need major concern in educational institutions
in Indonesia. Changes from the practice of route leaning to student active learning should be started from teacher education, where prospective teachers should be trained to be creative in designing a
lesson. This article is written based on a continuous classroom research on the pre-service trainings that prepare prospective teachers to become creative instructional designer through Strategy and
Design Course. 2 classes of second year students undertaking first degree in English Education were involved in this study. One class comprising 30 students were treated with Cyclic Reflective Model,
while another class comprising the same number of students were treated with conventional teaching
model where they worked on their own and got feedback from the instructor at the end of their
project. At the end of the semester, they had to create a lesson plan to be assessed on the bases of Strenberg’s five components of creativity. Comparisons were made between the two groups. Student
group treated with Cyclic Reflective Model were found to be more creative than that treated with conventional teaching. The former demonstrated consistent higher scores in all the five components
of creativity

Readiness to Use GIS Technology in Vocational High Schools in Indonesia in Facing the Challenges of the Industrial Revolution 4.0.
Arya Bakri, Yatti Sugiarti, Didin Wahyudin School of Postgraduate Studies, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia
Abstract
Since the enactment of curriculum changes in 2013, several factors have emerged that often become obstacles in geographic and geospatial technical vocational high schools in Indonesia, one of which
is minimal acceptance of Geography Information System (GIS) technology. This teacher survey research is to explore the determinant factors that influence the acceptance of GIS technology,
through identifying what obstacles are found when the acceptance of GIS technology is integrated in classroom learning. Using survey data from 94 teachers from 34 geographic and geospatial
technical vocational schools, question assumptions were formulated using the technology acceptance model (TAM 2), with key determinants of Perceived Usefulness (PU) and User Intention (UI). The
lack of knowledge, skills and experience of teachers following GIS training, has caused teachers to be slow in accepting GIS technology. These pressures prevent teachers from reflecting on their
teaching, and ultimately result in substitution of teachers intellectual creativity with compliance culture and contribute to the tendency of teachers to prioritize learning experiences that they believe
can be directly applied to their own classroom situations. It is clear that the benefits of implementing a classroom will not come alone if the teacher is not ready and trained for the use of GIS technology.

UIN Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi
Abstract This study aims to determine the assessment process of educational personnel, describe the
obstructions during the assessment and formulate the solutions to manage the obstructions in Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri 2 Kota Jambi. This research applies qualitative descriptive method.
The data were collected by doing an observation, interview, and documentation. The results of this study indicate the performance assessment process of educational personnel, particularly those with
permanent status (civil servant) in Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri 2 Kota Jambi is carried out fairly well by referring to Government Regulation and applicable law. The appraisal is based on the
Employee Work Objectives (EWO) and work behavior. This assessment was processed by the
appraisal officials, the Head of Administration and the headmaster. The Employee Work Objectives
made by the educational personnel contain periodic reports on performance results made in daily, weekly, monthly and annual periods. Therefore, the work behavior is assessed by the appraisal
officials during the working time based on aspects of service orientation, integrity, commitment, discipline, cooperation, and leadership. The assessment of educational personnel in Madrasah from
2016 to 2017has improved, specifically in the appraisement of Employee Work Objectives, discipline, service, and work commitment. However, obstacles are also found in the implementation of the
assessment as in the malfunction of fingerprint devices when the power outage happens and the
subjectivity in assessing educational personnel. The solution to overcome these obstacles is to prepare an official report to replace the failure of fingerprint device as proof of the presence of
educational personnel, and to do evaluation and advisement together along with the assessed officials and the assessors to avoid any subjectivity in performance appraisal of education personnel.

[ABS-130] THE COMPETENT OF ISLAMIC BOARDING SCHOOL MANAGEMENT
Marwazi UIN Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi
Abstract
Management in the broadest sense is planning, organizing, directing, and controlling or supervising, has been carried out by the leadership of the Islamic Boarding School, even though the level of skill
(competence) varies from one another. Even in the process, the leaders of Islamic Boarding School are not only based on the management function, but are also equipped with various other activities
based on religious beliefs (practices of the Sunnah) that they believe in. Starting from a high sincerity that is whatever managerial work they do is purely due to God to an attitude of generosity. So, the
researchers are not enough to look at the managerial process in the Islamic Boarding School only with the eyes of modern management. Islam does not only talk about theology, but it is a perfect
civilization, so globally found values of management regarding work plans, work motivation, ways of working, cooperation, leading, evaluating, controlling, etc., even in ways special ways to be
successful in the work program through prayer, dzikir, wirid specifically, mujahadah, riyadhah batiniyah, etc. in order to get taufiq (success in carrying out deeds), hidayah (instructions for running
deeds), and ma’unah (help to run deeds deeds) ) from Allah SWT. Thus, in that way, not a few Islamic Boarding School leaders have good managerial competence, so that they successfully
manage the educational institutions they lead, both in terms of infrastructure, educational processes, and results achieved; This is recognized by many parties about the success and even its superiority,
so that the graduates are also not a few who succeed in the midst of society.

Abstract One common theme in most literature is that biology in the 21st century has developed into
quantitative science. Many students assume that biology is a subject free from mathematical elements and calculus. A learning paradigm shift is needed in practice and fulfilment of thinking skills
and technological literacy to meet the multidimensional global competition in the 21st century. Learning the materials about animals tends to be memorizing activities and the students assume
that the materials are difficult to understand and require the ability to remember because the materials are the characteristics, similarities and differences, and terms of complex anatomy and
morphology structures. In order to eliminate the students’ negative paradigm regarding the material about the animal kingdom, this research on instructional materials has been carried out to support
21st century skills. This research aimed to obtain relevant instructional materials, which was prepared based on students prior knowledge. This research is a research and development using
instructional materials as the object in the form of modules that contain theory and integrated exercise. This instructional material is made based on the students prior knowledge and developed
in accordance with propositions from the main references. The trial was conducted on 30 tenth-grade students who had not studied the material about world of animals. The results showed that 46.7%
of students had a correct understanding of the invertebrates material; 31.6% of students experienced misconceptions; and the remaining 10.4% and 13.3% had incomplete understanding
and did not know invertebrates materials, respectively.

Universitas Pakuan
Abstract There are two main factors that have triggered a low level of Consumer Empowerment Index (IKK)
in Indonesia, namely the lack of public knowledge about regulations and institutions related to consumer protection, and complaints that are not common among consumers. Improved education
can take advantage of the involvement of many Consumer Protection NGOs in various regions by prioritizing strengthening consumer empowerment in eight sectors, namely clean water, energy,
health, medicine and food, housing and property, transportation, financial services and e-commerce. This study aims to analyze the implementation of consumer protection education programs in
improving the IKK. The method of approach taken in this research is a normative juridical approach
and is supported by empirical research. The results of the study show that on average consumers in
Indonesia are still helpless with an IKK score of 40.41 ("capable" level) in 2018. This means that Indonesian consumers are only limited to being able to use their rights and obligations as consumers
to determine the best choice and to use domestic products. IKK is an index that measures the level of consumer empowerment in Indonesia. The higher the value of the IKK shows that consumers in
Indonesia are increasingly empowered.

Abstract
Jarimatika is often considered to be unusable in early childhood education because many teachers think it is early to introduce jarimatika for early childhood. this article tries to solve the problem of
understanding kindergarten teachers about jarimatika by using quasi-experimental methods or quasi Experimental design used is a form of non-equivalent control group design. The design used in this
study uses the design of Posttest only design with nonequivalent groups, namely experiments on 2 groups (School of Control and Experimental Schools). Twelve kindergarten teachers from two
different schools in two different Kelurahan in Banten, Indonesia, were selected as participants. Data was collected through questionnaires and analyzed using collected ones. The findings of this study
renew where kindergarten teachers use jarimatika in understanding the concept of counting the
beginnings of children aged 5-6 years. The results of this study showed significant results obtained
by school control with a t-test of 5.602 and an experimental school of 5.861, so that the results of tcount ≥ ttable can be seen. Based on predetermined criteria, that is if tcount abel -table or tcount
≥ ttable 5.602 ≥ 2.042 then H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted, which means that there is a difference between Posttest of school control and Experimental school. This finding also attests to the teachers
understanding of jarimatika which was agreed to in the early calculation of the concept of counting in early childhood more quickly and precisely. This shows the need for new understanding in
kindergarten teacher questions in the application of jarimatika in early childhood education.

Abstract
Qualified learning will be achieved if the teacher is able to design the learning process well. The indicator of good learning design is if it is able to acomodate the students’ different learning style,
to give the opportunity for the students to be active, creative, innovative and to dig up students’ potency. Thus, it is important to change the teachers’ mindset in designing the learning process.
Through lesson study based metacognitive strategy, learning is organized through plan, do, see steps. In the plan step, the teacher makes chapter design and lesson design that applies
metacognitive strategy. In the do step the students identify basic competence that should be achieved and the steps of the learning process or students activity that should be written in the
learning design (self-planning). Then the students recheck the relevance between the basic competence and and the learning steps that should be available (self monitoring). The last step in
do is evaluating the process and result of learning organization that the make (self evaluation). The last step is see or reflection where the lecturer together with the observers evaluate the learning
process and learning result to revise the future learning. The observation result shows that designing the lesson study based learning activity through metacognitive strategy has changed their view point
in making the students learn. They are careful in analyzing the need, relating the relevance between basic competence and the learning steps that should be available. They also get used to recheck the
design they have made. From this point they get used to be careful, sistematic, selective, comprehensive, logic, and try to dig up their potency in designing learning activity. Through this
effort, it is expected that qualified learning can be achieved.

CHEMISTRY LABORATORY WORKS Galuh Yuliani, Heli Siti Halimatul, Siti Aisyah, Tuszie Widhiyanti
Chemistry Department, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia
Abstract In chemistry, laboratory works are ideal media for students to understand the connection between
the unseen microscopic world and the observable macroscopic world. Laboratory experiences provide opportunities for team building, inquiry-based learning, hands-on activities, and exposure to
standard laboratory equipment and technology. Many of the concepts and principles common in high school chemistry courses can actually be demonstrated or discovered through experiments
performed with simple apparatus. Currently, investigations on the Indonesian teachers’ performance in designing practical chemistry laboratory are still very rare. The investigation is crucial to
understand the problems and challenges faced by Chemistry teachers in preparing laboratory works and to improve their performance based on the research findings. This study investigated the
teachers’ current practice of laboratory activities in various high schools in West Java, Indonesia. This research is a survey research with a qualitative approach. The research subjects were 27 senior
high school. The instrument used in this study was a non-test in the form of a Likert scale questionnaire. The questionnaires consisted of 9 items covering the pre-laboratory activity, during
laboratory activity and post-laboratory activity. It was found that the number of experiments conducted, teachers’ preparation and the reflection session after laboratory works were considered
sufficient. However, the teachers’ awareness on the safety instruction and green chemistry approach were still low. Additionally, laboratory works that focuses on the problem-based and discovery are
not popular among teachers. It is suggested that the later practical work method is introduced to teachers because this approach allows students to practice higher level analytical skills, problem
solving, connection to theory and transferable skills.

“I feel like I have somebody to talk to”: Exploring students’ voices through journaling
Rojab SIti Rodliyah Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia
Abstract
Journaling is believed to have many benefits, yet it is not widely used in EFL classrooms. This paper aims to explore the students’ voices regarding the implementation of regular journaling in their
writing class. The data were obtained from their written reflection after they wrote weekly journals for one semester. The qualitative analysis of the students’ reflection revealed that the students’
perceived journaling as something worth doing because it offers some advantages, both psychologically and academically. Psychologically, they think journaling is a good means of epressing
their feelings and ideas especially when they do not have enough courage and confidence to speak up in the class. Journaling can make them feel ‘heard’ without feeling ashamed and fearing of being
evaluated. Academically, they believe that journaling can develop their writing habit and improve
their writing skills. They further recommend that journaling should be done more frequently.

ASSESSMENTS: VOICE FROM ENGLISH TEACHERS’ EXPERIENCE Sri Setyarini
English Education Department, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia Dr. Setiabudhi Street 229, Bandung, West Java, Indonesia
Abstract
Determining instructions of higher order thinking skills in curriculum 2013 is still challenging and new for most English teachers in Indonesian context. Therefore, this current study emphasizes on
investigating teachers’ understanding in constructing higher order thinking-based assessments and teachers’ difficulties in designing the assessments. A case study was applied with two research
instruments, namely document analysis in the form of teacher-made assessments and interview with the teachers. The participants of this study were two English teachers from two different junior high
schools- one public school and one private schools as the users of Curriculum 2013. The findings reveal that a misconception about the concept of higher order thinking skills assessments among
teachers is still found because the teachers dominantly focused on the degree of difficulty of the questions instead of cognitive complexity in designing higher order thinking assessments.
Consequently, the test items of the teacher-made assessments may only promote the students’ analyzing and evaluating skills, so that the creating skill as the highest level of HOTS seemed not to
be identified in the teachers’ test. In addition, from the results of interview with the teachers, they claimed that most of the questions were constructed in the form of multiple choices to measure the
students’ HOTS and they were not confident to modify the multiple choices to be essays and open-ended questions forms as characters of HOTS assessment. It happened because the teachers
believed that creating skill is related to a product of written texts. Overall, it is concluded that the teachers’ understanding about HOTS-based assessment was likely low and needs to be improved
through exposures and enrichment by attending trainings and workshops about HOTS-based assessment.

PRIVATE ISLAMIC HIGH SCHOOLS IN MATARAM Sudirman Wilian, Dadi Setiadi, Nyoman Sridana
Post Graduate Program of Educational Administration Mataram University Jl. Pendidikan No. 37 Mataram 83125
Abstract
The internal quality assurance system (SPMI) of the secondary education unit is a quality assurance system that all components in the education unit should implement. SPMI in private Islamic high schools needs to be studied
and resolved so that the quality of the process as well as the learning outcomes of students can be equivalent to other schools. This research is aimed to figure out the understanding of Islamic schoool staffs concernng internal
quality assurance system, the programs implemented, and the constraints faced. The subjects of this research are teachers, principals, and administration staffs. This research implemented a qualitative approach as its research
design. Data were collected through document analysis, questionnaires, and interviews with participants such as, teachers, principals, and administration staffs. Data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative approach, employng the stages of data collection, data analysis preparation, thorough reading, encoding data, encoding text
for descriptions and themes used in research reports. The results of the study claimed that the teaching staffs and administration staffs as a whole did not fully understand the SPMI of the secondary education unit. Equally
important, the quality assurance programs have not been well organized regarding SPMI to be able to meet the education standards. The main issue occurred in private Islamic high schools was that all school members did
neither have a good understanding of SPMI nor a good quality assurance team. Consequently, school programs did not lead to gradual quality improvement to achieve and exceed national education standards. Both sampling
schools were in urgent necessity to be given understanding and guidance related to the stages of improving school quality in accordance with the schools vision and mission as well as national education standards. As an initial step, private Islamic high schools need to establish SPMI that is in accordance with the requirements in order to improve
the quality of administrative and learning processes.

Abstract
Apologies are the most fundamental strategies for remedying offences and reflecting the degree of the speaker’s politeness. However, Arabic textbooks in boarding schools in Indonesia lack of
materials that are very required to help students to develop their pragmatic competence of the apology speech acts in Arabic. This study assumes to investigate, explicitly, the language of the
students’ apologizing in boarding schools in Indonesia and enhancing the students’ pragmatic competence in a non-native language; Arabic. Two-hundred one informants were chosen
purposively; one-hundred and one male participants and one-hundred and one female participants. Informants were assigned to fill in a Discourse Completion Task (DCT) questionnaire consists of eight
situations about the boarding school rules. The findings showed that the boarding school students employed apology strategies that are vary from the Arabic standards of apologizing to some extent.
The students overused the head act strategy expression of regret. In other words, the students overused the expressions afwan and asif to remedy light and serious offences. These two expressions
are used by Arabs to remedy light offences only. The students believe that the apology strategies are universal so they transfer directly, the Head Act strategies in particular, from L1 into L2. Thus,
in order to enhance the BSS’s realization of the speech acts of apologizing in Arabic, it is a requisite to develop the current textbooks that may develop their pragmatic knowledge.

Abstract
The study aimed to develop a learning model based on the School Environment Exploration Activities (SEEA) in science of learning. The development and assessment of the SEEA-based learning model
developed using the Tessmer Formative Design flow, which includes, self-assessment, expert judgment, individual testing and small group testing and field testing (broad group). Evaluation of
the results of the development of the SEEA learning model by experts shows that the model is categorized as valid, both in content validity and in construct validity. In addition, validation from
experts also shows that the corresponding components, namely: rational models, theoretical support, developed syntax, social systems, instructional impacts and accompaniment impacts are
also declared valid. In the one-to-one test consisting of teachers using the SEEA model also shows
that the model is valid. Then in the small group test in the class, all students were also able to follow
the SEEA model properly. Thus, the SEEA model developed is suitable for use by science teachers in implementing science learning in schools

Abstract The main purpose of teaching is to optimally create a comfortable learning atmosphere through a
harmony in instructional communication to obtain an optimal learning achievement (Sibarani, 2004: 175; Willis, 2010: 81-82). An optimal learning achievement is determined among others by the
increasingly fluent language ability of the learner since the more fluent his or her language ability, the more fluent his or her thinking and the more successful his or her learning will be (Suherdi,
2012: 4). Success is determined by 20% hard skill and 80% soft skill (Aman, et al., 2014: 425) and the language norm is one of the factors (Pranowo, 2014: 182, Kartika, 2004: 67 and Darmojuwono,
2011: 21). The sample of this study was selected purposively from senior high schools and vocational schools in Singaraja. The data were collected through observation and interview. The result showed
that the harmony in instructional communication in creating a comfortable learning atmosphere was dominantly (85%0) determined by the readiness of the teacher to understand the students’
condition, for example, his or her willingness to lose ( ready to control himself or herself) by not protracting an emotional condition. On the contrary, the teacher showed respect, solidarity, polite
attitude and behavior to the students. On this basis, it is suggested to teachers to show a polite attitude and to speak politely to the students. For example, the teacher greets the students rather
than the students greet the teacher.

Abstract As part of the Balinese culture, Balinese script has rarely been used today. Its Balinese-to-Latin script transliteration
knowledge is also affected by that condition and has caused concern over the threat of the extinction. This study is aimed to preserve that knowledge through technological approach by collaboration between Information
Technology and Balinese Language discipline. This research analyzed ubiquitous learning aspect of Balinese-to-Latin script transliteration as part of Balinese Language education, which is a mandatory local subject from basic
to high school in Bali Province. This analysis was conducted on Balinese Glyph Recognition (BalineseGR) web application that was developed as a technology product of Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha (Undiksha), Indonesia.
BalineseGR is basically a sort of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) web application that receive Balinese script image and output Latin text. It was considered as the first Balinese-to-Latin script transliteration web application and its initial development has covered transliteration knowledge of eighteen Balinese script’s basic syllable only.
Since ubiquitous learning is supported by mobile computer through wireless network, and it is aimed to provide learners with content and interaction anytime and anywhere, BalineseGR web application has several aspects to
enhance, i.e.: 1) its counterpart mobile application where image input not only from file but also more useful directly from camera; and 2) richer knowledge content, including transliteration of the vowels, Akśara Şwalalita,
sound killers (Pangangge Tengenan), consonant killers (Pangangge Tengenan), numerals, punctuations, ligatures, and miscellaneous glyph.

Abstract
Strategy is considered important in the process of learning and teaching activity that teachers may encourage students to be active in learning activity and to create a good learning environment in
order to achieve the learning goal. There are two types of strategy which students will have to face; direct strategy and indirect strategy. Direct strategy refers to a language learning strategy that
directly relates to the target language. Direct strategy of language learning requires complete comprehension of the language itself. This study aims to know the application of direct strategy in
learning Japanese language through songs particularly to respondents who experienced Japan’s
occupation in Minahasa by the year 1942-1945. The history of Nippon’s occupation in Minahasa is a
chronological event of the causal effect in both negative and positive way, namely language inheritance that is inherited to former student’s memory who lived in the era of Japan’s colonization
for about 60 year or more. Learning strategy in the era of Nippon’s occupation in Minahasa is a direct learning strategy which is the combination of 3 groups of the strategy: 1. Memorization, 2. Cognition
and 3. Compensation.
