Bonsai Society of Brevard is a non-profit society meeting to further the artistic endeavor of Bonsai. The club meets the third Saturday of every month, 1 PM, at the

By Dr. Reggie Perdue Hi bonsai lovers. Hope all is well. I'm writing this message after having had back surgery this morning so hopefully not too many errors. Is summer here or what? It's definitely been hot out, even into the late afternoons. The tropicals love it. No worries with them as long as you are faithful with watering. My deciduous trees have slowed or even stopped their growth cause of the heat. Many plants will slow down when the temps are over 90 F. When it cools there will be another short growth spurt before they shut down for winter. Now is the time for replanting really tropical trees like Dwarf Black Olives and Buttonwoods. July 1st ten members of our club battled traffic, bugs and heat to go to Mary Madison's house to purchase buttonwoods for the future. She is considered the "Buttonwood Queen" having decades of experience collecting and caring for them and quite frankly she generally has the best trees for sale albeit a bit expensive this time. All buttonwoods collected from the Fl. Keys are "one of a kind" and the deadwood on them is so much better than the buttonwoods collected further north, it's worth the cost. While man can carve acceptable trees, no one beats how Mother Nature does it. We bought a fine tree for Ronn Miller to work on at this month's meeting and will be raffled at the end of the meeting. If anyone else would like to bring in a buttonwood for Ronn to help you with, please feel free to do so. Ronn has a lot of experience with buttonwoods and he had one of his Buttonwood bonsai displayed at the National Bonsai Exhibition in Rochester, NY last year. Hopefully I will have recovered enough to go. I definitely don't want to miss this meeting.

Another reason not to miss this meeting is we need to organize for our Annual Bonsai at the Zoo Exhibit Aug. 19 and 20th. It's snuck up on me and I don't have a list of those who want to display their bonsai. Remember this is "our" show. Please get involved no matter what level of experience you are at. We will have different sizes of space available for trees. There are 8 ft. tables, half tables, 30 in. wide alcoves and at least room for 20 or more shohin/mame size trees. We have room for all sizes. If you plan to display a tree be sure to prepare it properly. Ideally the surface mossed, if not then clean soil and NO weeds. Clean pot. Water thoroughly before the show, not at the show. Try and have an appropriate stand and accent plant too. We generally can't put up scrolls except for 2 areas. If you have a cool display with a scroll, let me know and we'll get you a spot if able. Tentatively we have 2 vendors again, Sandy from Orlando Bonsai who has all sorts of tools and maybe some trees too. The other is Smitty Bonsai who should have primarily small and medium trees. We will also have a kids workshop on Saturday a 1PM for up to 20 participants. We will need help with this workshop, volunteers for this would be greatly appreciated. We will have one demo daily for the zoo patrons at 1PM, down from 2 daily, cause of the heat. We meet Saturday at 8 AM at the zoo in south parking lot by the Lodge for set up which takes about 1 1/2 hours and end Saturday at 4PM. Sunday is 10 AM start and we break down at 4 PM which usually takes 45 minutes to finish. BSOB members get into the Brevard Zoo free that day. Any volunteers to look over the trees during the show will be greatly appreciated. I plan to be there the whole time but may have to step out from time to time. I hope folks are excited for this as this is our way of introducing Bonsai to others. Let's show them "what we got!" Reggie

Road Trip!
On Saturday, July 1, I tagged along on a road trip to Lake Placid to visit Mary Madison. Hidden in the
remote farm country in the middle of south central Florida lies a Buttonwood oasis. Following a 2 hour drive, we stepped out into a searing hot day with hardly a breeze. Mary came out and greeted us – just about everyone knew her but me. There was a least 50- 80 buttonwoods ranging from small
recently obtained starters to very large older trees. I made a faux pas and asked Mary’s daughter where they get their trees and she just smiled and said “The Keys”. Ok, their harvesting grounds are
a family secret. Buttonwoods cannot be re-generated from cuttings, like a Jade, so each one is a gift of nature. So considering the time and expense of gathering, trimming, potting and maintaining a tree, a Buttonwood is not cheap, but being a Bonsai club, we got a fair price.
Around noon, we retreated to Mary’s house for lunch and cold beers. The AC was welcomed too.
The club purchased a demo tree for next year’s convention, it is a rather large tree that should be spectacular.
I learned what “triangle” means and to look for signs of it when buying a tree. If you can make any road trips with the club – do it. Your knowledge base will increase and you will pick up more terms, like triangle, in casual conversation. At least you can learn to “talk the talk”

This story is a bit dated and you may have never heard of Daizo Iwasaki, but his
gardens are spectacular.

I just heard that Daizo Iwasaki passed away on Sunday. He spent his life sharing his love and passion of
bonsai with the entire bonsai community. Takasago-an Bonsai Garden, his home and collection of bonsai
was truly the most spectacular garden in the world. Although Mr. Iwasaki was elderly he was still active
with bonsai activities and traveled throughout the world promoting and supporting the hobby he was so
passionate about.
All of Mr. Iwasaki's bonsai are very beautiful and reflected the love he gave to them. The world bonsai
community has just lost one of our most active, sincere and generous members who made an impact and
has left a hole which nobody can fill. Mr. Iwasaki spent his life promoting bonsai and assembled the finest
collection in the world. His wife, Mrs. Naemi Iwasaki was also interested in bonsai and had a very good
eye as well. She accompanied him during his many travels, taking excellent care of him as they both
traveled throughout the world promoting bonsai.
I will always cherish and remember my many visits to Takasago-an where both Mr. and Mrs. Naemi
Iwasaki made my group feel welcome.
