Meet the Member Lagniappe’s Vice-President, Whitney Richard

Sound like Whitney was born with a screwdriver in his hand. While not an experi-enced restorer, he’s been taking stuff apart (like door knobs) since childhood and has fash-ioned some pretty impressive “things,” like a tiki bar rocket. If you haven’t seen the Cajun Coalition’s 2013 LDRS (Large Dangerous Rocket Ship) video, check out this YouTube clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZX6Ewu5Ba0 . These bad boys, led by Whitney Rich-ard, will make you proud to be a Cajun, Cher! Whitney’s team fashioned a high flying rocket ship from a home-made tiki bar and won first place in the LDRS division of the Tripoli Rock-etry Association, a US-based international high-power amateur rocketry group. It’s an awe-some video featuring Kari Byron from the Myth Busters television series. Whitney loves all sorts of mechanical things and probably picked up a few genes and valuable experiences from his father. While lil’bitty Whitney sat on the fender playing with his trusty screwdriver (no pun intended), dad worked on the family’s ’57 Ford in Me-tairie. By adolescence, however, the family was in Colorado. As many of us experienced when we were “young and stupid,” drag racing was Whit-ney’s next big adventure. He destroyed lots of ’75 Camaro parts (at least 5 engine, 4 trans-missions, 2 rear ends) in those early years, finally realizing that $40,000 in late ‘80s dollars could have bought him a rail dragster. Other notable “later to become classic” cars were a ’72 Barracuda (his favorite) and ’78 Cutlass. High School was followed by 4 years in the Air Force where Whitney got used to be-ing off the ground as a crew member of a C-141 transport, racking up over 3,000 hours in the air including 2 complete circumnavigations of the globe. He returned to New Orleans af-ter his military service and attended Louisiana Vocational and Technical College while work-ing as a refueler at MSY, along with various other jobs including automotive technician. [Writer’s Note: did you know that MSY, the airfield call letters for Louis Armstrong Airport, stand for Moisant Stock Yard, a business named after famed early aviator John Moisant who fell from his plane to that field and died in 1910] After graduating from the technical college with a degree in Micro Computer Elec-tronics Whiney went to work for Consolidated Natural Gas as a Computer Network Engi-neer. After 12 years at CNG he started his own business, Performance Computers Systems of Louisiana, providing IT support to Dental Offices. Since marrying Charla Roth, Marty and Dale’s daughter, Whitney’s awareness of clas-sics cars has broadened considerably. Like Marty, he’s attracted to well-engineered cars like Packard’s. He also loves the Cadillac's and Buicks of the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. His clas-sic is a 1988 BMW 528e; a four-door German tourer. It’s all original and he’s trying to keep it that way. Whitney credits Charla for his emerging fascination with classics. Charla does on-line marketing and runs a local store in Metairie. They have been together since 2005 and have no children together, but share three children. Charla’s son is the youngest – Nathan, who is currently attending Northwestern Louisiana State University. Next is Whitney’s son Jonathan who lives in New Orleans and works for the Haunted Mortuary Escape Rooms. The oldest is his daughter Amy who lives in Washington DC. Her husband works for Voice of America Radio. Their family brings the 4 grandchildren - Cameron, Abigale, Nicholas, and Ariana.

Though Whitney has not been in car clubs before AACA, he dove right in when joining Lagniappe Chapter, raising his hand when we needed a Vice-President for 2019. No stranger to responsibility, Whitney has been very active as VP, taking our Presi-dent’s place when he’s out of state, writing articles and tracking event and, with Charla has been planning very enjoyable monthly outings. Thank you Whitney for raising your hand and all you do! by

10TH ANNUAL “COLLECTOR CAR APPRECIATION DAY ” TO BE CELEBRATED ON JULY 12, 2019

The SEMA Action Network (SAN) announced that the next Collector Car Appreciation

Day (CCAD) will be celebrated on July 12, 2019. The date will mark the tenth consecu-

tive commemoration in what is now an annual event to raise awareness of the vital role

automotive restoration and collection plays in American society. A brief recap of the

2018 festivities is highlighted in the current issue of Driving Force. Also, be sure to

check out the full photo gallery. The images sent in by this year’s event hosts are great-

ly appreciated.

Intended to celebrate the classics of the past and the future, the U.S. Congress helped

launch CCAD by passing resolutions each year since 2010 at the SAN’s request. The

previous resolutions were sponsored by co-chairs of the SEMA-supported Congression-

al Automotive Performance and Motorsports Caucus.

These Congressional leaders have been strong advocates for the automotive hobby in

Washington, D.C., and recognize the integral role collector cars have played in fostering

our nation’s appreciation for the automobile’s unique historical place in our history. In

fact, the states of Louisiana, Mississippi, West Virginia and Wisconsin, as well as most

of the Canadian provinces, officially marked the occasion.

In preparation for the tenth celebration of the nation’s automotive heritage, enthusiasts

and related businesses are already planning open houses, car cruises, club gatherings

and educational events to commemorate the day. The SAN will again maintain and

publicize a list of scheduled events to commemorate America’s time-tested love affair

with the automobile at semaSAN.com. Individuals, car clubs and business owners

interested in publicizing events can submit the details of their celebration. For ques-

tions, contact SAN Director Colby Martin at 909-978-6721 or [email protected]. If you are

unable to celebrate on July 12, the SAN encourages events to be scheduled throughout

the month of July 2019.

THE CLUB

The Antique Automobile Club of America is the country’s oldest and largest automotive historical

society. A Pennsylvania nonprofit corporation, it is dedicated to the preservation, restoration and

maintenance of automobiles and automotive history. Founded in Philadelphia in 1935, its membership

has grown to over 60,000 members from all parts of the world. The AACA holds country-wide

competitive and noncompetitive tours, meets and events. These are on a divisional basis offering a

program within the reach of everyone. Tours and activities relating to the hobby are sponsored,

including the AAA Revival Glidden Tour®, Founders Tour, Nickel Tour, Reliability Tour, Sentimental Tour

and Divisional Tours. The annual meeting features seminars, trade show and a year end culminating

awards banquet.

The AACA is proud of its relationship with the many historical organizations devoted to similar objectives

the world over. The Club, through its national office, publications, and membership, aids individuals,

museums, libraries, historians and collectors dedicated to the preservation of automotive history.

VEHICLES

Road vehicles of all types, 25 years old and older are grouped for competitive purposes into many

classes according to age and mechanical features. AACA has a comprehensive judging system that allows

members to earn significant awards for their vehicles. In non-competitive classes, AACA also recognizes

original cars in its Historic Preservation of Original Features (HPOF) group, and unmodified 25 year and

older vehicles that are driven and have not obtained a First Junior award in its Drivers Participation Class

(DPC) . Recent recognitions have come to competitive vehicles (race cars) and Second Generation Class

Vehicles (SGCV) for factory-assembled cars that resemble original cars (Avanti, Clenet, Shay and Zim-

mer). The club recognizes classes of motorcycles and documented race cars as well. Further details can

be found in our judging manual which is available online at www.aaca.org.
