M.K. Aviation, the global aircraft and engine leasing company, has recently concluded five new transactions, including the purchase and lease of two CF6-80 engines, one PW4060 en-gine, and two RB211-535 engines. These engine customers join M.K. Aviation’s growing portfolio, which stretches worldwide. “Thanks to these successful transactions and its strong and sta-ble credit history, M.K. AIRCRAFT & ENGINE NEWS European laminar flow research takes new step with Airbus’ BLADE Flight Lab

Airbus has initiated its latest research in further reducing the fuel consumption of airliners – keeping the company and Europe at the forefront of enhancing air transportation’s eco-logical footprint. This milestone was the Airbus A340 Flight Lab’s first takeoff equipped with outer wing sections designed for highly smooth airflow over their surfaces. Known as natural laminar flow, such smoothed passage of air creates less drag than the airflow on traditional wings, potentially reducing fuel burn by as much as 4.6% on an 800-nautical mile trip. Des-ignated as project BLADE – an acronym for Breakthrough Laminar Aircraft Demonstrator in Europe – this research effort utilizes the first-ever A340 jetliner produced by Airbus, with its outboard wings replaced with approximately 10-meter-long laminar wing panels. These panels represent about two-thirds of the wing size on a short- or medium-range airliner, for which the laminar flow technology is deemed best suited. BLADE is organized through Europe’s Clean Sky aeronautical research program. The BLADE project involves 21 European partners with 500 contributors, including GKN Aerospace: designer of the starboard laminar flow wing panel, and Saab: designer of the port wing segment.Airbus flight test engineer Philippe Seve said preparations of the A340 BLADE testbed have spanned 16 months, which included integration of the laminar flow wing sections, along with the installation of a highly complex installation of sensors and instrumentation to collect 2,750 dedicated measurements during some 150 flight test hours.A team of 10 specially-trained pilots, test engineers and flight test engineers have been pre-paring for the A340 BLADE flight evaluations, spending time in a simulator and familiarizing themselves with the mission equipment – the most technologically-advanced to be installed on an Airbus flight test aircraft.

Sepang Aircraft Engineering opens second hangar

Sepang Aircraft Engineering (SAE) officially opened its second hangar on September 21. The event also celebrated the 10th anniversary of the independent maintenance, repair and over-haul (MRO) centre. The 12,000 m² hangar boosts SAE’s capacity to handle the Airbus A320 Fam-ily, and can accommodate two of the aircraft at any time for major maintenance checks. It also features Malaysia’s first eco-friendly closed-door dedicated paint bay, as well as state-of-the-art workshops for the repair and overhaul of a wide range of components used on Airbus aircraft, in-cluding hydraulic and pneumatic systems. SAE’s first hangar, which opened in 2007, has a floor area of 37,000 m² and can accommodate up to six single-aisle aircraft or two wide-body aircraft at any one time. In addition to its commercial aircraft activities, SAE provides spare parts and technical support services to the Royal Malay-sian Air Force’s fleet of A400M military airlifters.

CAIRE robot enables upside down repairs

A highly flexible repair procedure for structures made of fiber-reinforced composites (FRCs) is about to be introduced to the aviation industry: Lufthansa Technik AG has filed two important patent ap-plications for its newly developed scarf joining robot, and preparations are underway to put the new system into commercial operation. The robot demonstrator developed during the “CAIRE” research and development project successfully passed all its tests. Trials on individual components as well as on entire aircraft proved that both reproducible repairs of damage and purely adhesive-based repairs on critical structures made of fiber-reinforced composites are possible. In addition, the robot can even be used for mobile repairs. The technology is scheduled for industrialization by the fall of 2018. Targeted use of the scarf-joining robot not only results in cost and time savings, the new procedure also significantly increases quality, since it makes entirely new repair geometries possible.

British Airways has become the first airline to introduce high-tech remote-controlled devices to push back aircraft across its short-haul operation. The airline is modernizing its operation to maintain and further improve punctuality for its customers. In partnership with Heathrow, the eco-friendly Mototok tugs will allow British Airways staff to prepare aircraft for departure more efficiently. The airline is the first commercial operator to deploy the devices across multiple air-craft stands. The equipment, used to move Airbus short-haul aircraft, replaces traditional diesel tugs, allowing a single ramp agent to push an aircraft backwards from the gate remotely. Emis-sions free and capable of moving planes with precision, five Mototoks are currently in operation across 25 stands at Terminal 5. They were integrated into the operation in August, and more than 100,000 customers have benefited from smoother departures already.

On the occasion of the APEX Expo 2017, ATR has signed a deal with aircraft cabin technol-ogy supplier Amphenol Phitek, which will pro-vide operators with the option of a standalone wireless In-Flight Entertainment (IFE) system. This will allow passengers to further enjoy their on-board experience by reading newspa-pers, downloading tourist guides, listening to music and watching films, series or other mul-timedia content on their personal electronic devices. Available from June 2018, this type of IFE will become an optional feature on all new ATRs, as well as being easily retrofittable on existing aircraft. This on-board streaming will be delivered by a simple, flexible IFE box solu-tion. Since no electrical or mechanical connec-tions are necessary, this box can be installed or removed as required, on every type of air-craft model. Airlines can liaise with the sup-plier to determine the best possible streaming content and consider the associated revenue opportunities.

Dubai’s Jumeirah Beach Residence saw a world first as a new two-seater self-flying taxi made its ‘proof of concept flight’. According to a government statement, the self-flying taxi will “be used for the world’s first self-flying taxi service set to be introduced by Dubai’s Road and Trans-port Authority (RTA)”, with passengers being shuttled across the city in the pilotless vehicle. Plans for the taxi were first unveiled at The World Government Summit in Dubai seven months ago. It has been developed and built by Volocopter, a German manufacturer of autonomous air vehicles. In a statement from Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, he commented that: “After the remarkable success of the first driv-erless metro in the region, we are glad to witness today the test flight of the Autonomous Air Taxi. This is another testament to our commitment to driving positive change. We are constantly exploring opportunities to serve the community and advance the prosperity and happiness of society.”Michael Rudolph, Head, Aviation Regulations and Safety, Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, is quoted as saying: “This is a something that has never been done before. We are so happy that this happened in Dubai. From a DCAA perspective, this proof-of-concept flight makes history and we are proud to be a support entity,” while also adding that the drone was monitored by a new drone tracking system newly implemented by the DCAA to ensure the utmost safety.According to Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Direc-tors of the RTA the taxi “has a variety of unique features that include top security and safety standards, and multiple redundancies in all critical components such as propellers, motors, power source, electronics and flight controls. It is also fitted with optional emergency par-achutes, nine independent battery systems, and a battery quick-charge and plug-in system, which takes two hours to reach full charge in the prototype version, a time that will be signifi-cantly reduced in the production version.”The taxi will be powered by clean electricity, with the current prototype having a maximum flight time of 30 minutes as a speed of 50kph, while it has a top flight speed of 100kph. It is understood that the taxi will be integrated with public transport systems in Dubai, including Dubai Metro, Dubai Tram, public buses, marine transit modes and taxis.
