Boltz Middle SchoolBoltz Middle School Newsletter December 2012
Dear Parents and/or Guardians of Boltz Middle School Students:
I hope this newsletter finds you well and you have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your
friends and family. There are roughly three weeks left until the first half of the school
year is over. December 20TH marks the end of the second quarter for students at Boltz. I
encourage you to check ParentVue and monitor your child’s grades and homework
completion. Teachers are available through email or by phone to discuss any questions
you may have. Please do not hesitate to set up a time to meet with your child’s teacher if
you are concerned with their progress.
We continue to have high expectations for students and staff at B.M.S. by focusing on
student achievement and the total development of your child while in middle school. It is
very important that students complete their homework assignments in order to do well on
their assessments. Student assessments account for 90% of your child’s grade. They can
do better if they devote time each night to their studies.
We will continue to conduct safety drills on a regular basis. These drills are necessary to
ensure that every child and staff member in the building is prepared for dealing with an
emergency situation. Please remember that when you are dropping your student off in the
morning, you must drop off in the lane closest to the building. It is not safe to let your child
out in the far lane where they may have to travel in front of cars. We are so appreciative of
your efforts to keep the pick-up line moving by pulling all the way forward, to the end of the
sidewalk.
We have seen many changes at Boltz Middle School over the last few years. One thing that
remains the same is we have great kids. Parents continue to be supportive and staff work
incredibly hard to do what’s best for your children. We look forward to the remainder of the
year and all of the challenges ahead of us.
On behalf of the entire Boltz Middle School staff, we wish you a happy holiday season.
As always, please do not hesitate to call us with questions or concerns.
Best Regards,
Penny Stires
Principal

Connected Math In CMP 1 we are finishing up with adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions.
We are going to be moving into percents and decimals. As we go through the unit on
percents, talk to your student about how to find percents when you are out and about. For
example, get them used to estimating the tip or a discount before they see the actual
receipt. We really want them to see how as adults we use percents all of the time.
Connected Math 2 In CMP 2 we are finished with ratios and proportions for now and are working on integers.
We will be adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing integers. Students will begin
adding on number lines then move into looking at patterns to understand subtraction,
multiplication and division. Students will work conceptual in the beginning and then we
will work our way towards the algorithms.
AVID 6th grade AVID is starting at semester! Students who are motivated to work hard, achieve
at a high level, and attend college are encouraged to apply. AVID, Advancement Via
Individual Determination, is an elective class for students who would like to prepare for a
4-year university. The curriculum of AVID features writing, inquiry, note-taking skills,
study skills, and tutoring by CSU students twice a week. To become an AVID student,
students will need to commit to daily note-taking using the Cornell Note process, tutoring
weekly, weekly binder, & planner checks. Students will also need to have good citizenship
through practicing the 6 P’s, having good attendance, and maintaining grades without D’s or
F’s. For an application, please see Ms. Rasmussen (room 8) or print one off Boltz’s
website.
Library News Library books need to be renewed or checked in before winter break. Also, please clear
fines up from the semester. Fines can be cleared by reading them off—one dime is equal to
one minute. Students can also bring in can foods or cash.
Firebirds Wresting Firebirds wrestling is back at Boltz from 6-7:30 Monday and Wednesday. Contact Nick Ray
at [email protected] for more information.
Spelling Bee
If any students are interested in participating in the Boltz Spelling Bee (which also includes
a vocabulary component this year!) you MUST let Mrs. Hardouin know ASAP! The bee will
take place after school from 2:30-3:30 on December 5 in Mrs. Hardouin's room, Room 25.

Grade News (continued)
So if you just had a few weeks to learn a world
language, what would you want to know? Well, you
could begin with: Guten Morgen! Hallo! Wie
geht’s? Auf Wiedersehen!
Explorations in German students are well on their way to learning a bit of Deutsch. The quarter began
with greetings, letters (speeded alphabet) numbers, and time telling. During a visit to the computer lab,
students will type short introductory letters which will be posted with photos outside of Frau’s room.
Come and see them!
Our units of study will also include: colors, clothing and the geography of
Germany and its neighboring countries. Students will also learn how to talk
about our school day. Letters will be written to teachers (in German) which
will highlight the students’ classes and preferences.
The quarter will end with discussions of German traditions and customs. In
addition, we will also talk about careers in which knowledge of German is
beneficial. Tschüss!

7th Grade Geography We just finished our unit exploring the republics of the former Soviet Union. The semester
will finish up with an in depth look at the role East Asia plays in modern society and the
reality that the world is becoming increasingly connected on a daily basis!
7th Grade Algebra We discovered Pythagorean Theorem and are now using it to solve
real-world problems. We are also working with square roots so that we
will be able to estimate, approximate & simplify roots. Next we will
learn about the differences between rational and irrational numbers.

Grade 7 Happenings (continued)
Math 7th Grade 7th grade math will be wrapping up the quarter with our next unit Filling and Wrapping.
7th grade students are working on the Geometry standard: “Solve real-world and
mathematical problems involving area, volume and surface area of two- and three
dimensional objects composed of triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, cubes, and right
prisms.”
In this unit, students will learn about designing packages for shipping products and how to
make reasonable comparisons when they shop. They will make patterns that fold into prisms
and cylinders and will find their volume and surface area. They will learn to think of the
volume of such objects as layers of cubes and connect this idea to the volume of many
different shapes. We will be doing many activities that involve surface area (filling) and
volume (filling).
German – Fall, 2012 The 7th grade German 1A students are well on their way to learning German. We have a
brand new text this year, and it provides the opportunity for students to use the MANY
activities to review for assessments.
So far, we have learned daily greetings and phrases. We have learned to introduce ourselves
and others. We have spent a great deal of time discussing the classroom, the objects in the
classroom, and some common classroom ‘commands.’
Furthermore, students have learned the various forms of verbs and how to use them in
sentences to create new meanings. We have gained the ability to discuss the classes we take,
the grades we are getting and our personal likes and dislikes.
The emphasis has been on conversation about various topics. With this performance target in
mind, we are also gaining knowledge of the structure of the German language so that we
progress toward not only fluency but accuracy.
This next month we will learn about the traditions and customs of the German people during
the month of December. The Christmas Markets, St. Nicolas and other seasonal traditions
will be introduced.

will continue to learn the German language structure so that our performance learning targets
remain correct structurally (grammar, word order).
