CHOICES

I know that when I go out to eat and am presented with a long and varied menu I will invariably be the last person in the party to make up their mind on what to eat! In fact I would often prefer that there was a set meal and no choice at all!

However, choice is an important part of our lives and I would like to set before you two important choices you can make right now. And it is important that you make them now as time is very short. Assisted Dying Bill Members of Parliament will vote on the Assisted Dying Bill on 11 September. The Bill seeks to change the law so that terminally ill patients with six months to live can be helped to die, subject to approval from doctors and a judge. There is an extremely helpful article in The Church Times on 21st August “What it means to be a burden on each other” that sets out clearly the choice we have to make in this very difficult area. It is hard to see people suffering but we can appreciate that once we start on this road it will become easier and easier to use this solution. It is an interesting statistic that in one state in the USA which have legalised Assisted Dying that around 60% of people who took this option did so because they did not want to be a burden. I believe that is a very dangerous view and goes against the Christian Teaching that we should bear one anothers burdens. If you feel strongly, as I do, then please let our MP know at once. Contact: Victoria Atkins MP, Westminster Office: 020 7219 5897, House of Commons, London SW1A 0AA, [email protected] Fracking You may well have seen the reports that designate parts of our Deanery as places where Fracking can take place without need for any special conditions. I have been made aware of the consultation that will conclude at the end of September and feel that this is another area in which we need to make our voice heard, whether in favour or against and you can do so by sending the postcard from the insert (see Advert) or contacting [email protected] More information on fracking http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-14432401 What is fracking?

Fracking is the process of drilling down into the earth before a high-pressure water mixture is directed at the rock to release the gas inside. Water, sand

and chemicals are injected into the rock at high pressure which allows the gas to flow out to the head of the well.

The process is carried out vertically or, more commonly, by drilling horizontally to the rock layer. The process can create new pathways to release gas or can be used to extend existing channels.

Congratulations to Fr Martin Faulkner who has been appointed

Rector of The Benefice of Withernsea with Owthorne, Garton-in-

Holderness with Grimston, Hilston, Hollym, Holmpton, Roos and Tunstall in the

Diocese of York (on the Coast, East of Hull). He will be inducted on 8th

October at 7pm by the Bishop of Hull. We are in the process of booking a

coach so please let the Deanery Office or me know if you would like to go (01790

His farewell service with us will be Sunday 30th August 10am Stickney. Many thanks

for all the donations for a farewell gift for Martin, Kaye, Angharad & Eleri.

St Andrew's Halton Holegate ….One step forwards...2 steps back.....

As with most things, once you start to strip back the outer layers, you find that things are worse than first thought....thus it has been with the roof project at Halton Holegate. When the lead and gutters were removed from the Nave, it became apparent that there was more work to do, other than the odd rafter repair that had been expected/allowed for, following initial inspection.

It was discovered that 3, and ultimately 4, of the principal (main) beam ends were totally rotten...the contractor was pulling out handfuls of rotten wood from the outside, and got as far as actually being 'inside' the church. Work had to stop until the structural engineer could come out and assess the situation. Thankfully it wasn't deemed necessary to replace the whole beams, but to splice in new ends...combination of huge baulks of timber and a steel inner support plate.

This entailed internal scaffolding, and also extra stonework. Needless to say the costs rose accordingly. The carpenter, after many weeks of toil has done an excellent job of the repair, and as they say...”you can't see the join”.

One problem solved....but it doesn't stop there. Once the leadwork was removed adjoining the Eastern gable wall, another problem reared its ugly head. The sandstone on the wall end has lost so much of its structural integrity, through erosion, time, and the masonry bees, that it is no longer able to support the weight of the coping stones, and the gable end is starting to peel away from the roof.

Again, visits from structural engineers, English heritage, and ultimately the Conservation officer. The gable wall (above the chancel) will have to be taken down and rebuilt. Unfortunately, after an intensive search, it is apparent that there is not sufficient, quality, green sandstone available to complete the repair. So....we have to use Ancaster stone, which requires permissions from EH and also might involve Planning permission...we await the reports of the various bodies.

All this extra work, and ultimate extra costs means that we will, once again, have to scale down the amount of work that we had hoped to achieve with the monies raised. Sadly it now looks as if the North aisle and possibly drainage works will have to be postponed until further funding can be applied for.

On the positive side, we have uncovered, and are addressing, some major structural problems, that would have worsened exponentially, with possible dangerous consequences.

We were exceptionally lucky with the weather on the day and it was pleasing to see so many guests enjoying the balmy weather. Our grateful thanks to all the very willing friends who worked hard to make this a very successful day and, of course none of this would have been possible without Carol and David Frasers' generosity in opening their garden for the day. We are delighted to announce that a record sum of £742.60 was raised for church funds. Our next date for your diary is Harvest Festival on Sunday 11 October followed on Monday 12 October by the famous Harvest Supper and auction of produce.

FAMILY SERVICE.

Doors, doors and more doors. How many doors did you come through this morning was the question asked by Reverend Joan Thornett at the Family service on August 2nd.

The team was despondent that in 14 years it was the first Family Service that no children had come through the doors as they were all on holiday. But then Marianne and her family arrived from Kent. Marianne was asked to design a door for her bedroom which she did. She was happy to listen to stories from literature read by Jane Parker and Margaret Cook. The extracts relating to doors were taken from The Secret Garden, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Alice in Wonderland and Wind in the Willows. It was explained that Christians believe that Jesus is like a doorway through which people can find God; a way to get to know Him and meet Him just as we go through a door to meet people.

Reverend Joan continued the theme when she talked about mental barriers that sometimes prevent people having a good relationship with family or God. The famous Holman Hunt picture of Jesus painted as the Light of the World shows Jesus standing at a door that has no handle or door knob. It can only be opened from the inside. ”We must open the door and say Welcome Lord.”

The next Family service will be on September 6th when Reverend Joan will lead a simplified Family Eucharist at 10.00am.

ERESBY NEWS

The residents of Eresby Hall have had some enjoyable outings this summer. Afternoon tea on the terrace at the Petwood Hotel in Woodhall Spa proved to be popular. A visit to the new Aquarium at Skegness followed by a fish and chip supper was also enjoyed. George was amazed at the different sizes of the fish and was pleased that they arrived at feeding time and saw the divers in the tanks. Another group visited Alford windmill followed by a visit to the fish farm and another group went to the field where Gaynor, one of the carers, keeps her horses and enjoyed feeding them. At the end of August a few residents will be spending a long weekend in Bridlington.

The crops grown in pots on the patio have done well and residents helped to pick the runner beans and potatoes and take them to Audrey in the kitchen ready for her to prepare for the meals. The boat at the entrance of the Hall looked beautiful with all its flowers as did the rest of the garden so to win Best Overall Garden 2015 for the Trust was well deserved. Well Done!

The Annual Summer Fair was held on August 8th and raised £369. Many thanks to everyone who supported the event. Doris Marsh, volunteer, raised £100 by raffling the knitted cuckoo clock she made. It was an amazing piece of knitting and was won by Reverend Jean Coates. Doris is raising money for the upkeep of the Memorial garden. She also raised £49 at St James Church Art and Craft sale by selling cards and other items she had made. Thank you Doris for all your support for the Hall. Message from Doris Thank you to all who supported the ‘cuckoo clock’ raffle and congratulations to Rev’d Jean Coates who won the clock – no excuse for being late now!

Beacon School Thank You On behalf of the staff and students of Beacon School I wanted to thank you and all the faithful people in Spilsby, Bolingbroke and the surrounding area, for the wonderful contribution to the school that was given to us this year. We are overwhelmed by your commitment and generosity - thank you so much.

As your article mentions we came to Ghana planning to start both an orphanage and a school. We however observed that many orphans are cared for by their extended families (albeit not always very well) and realised that

Page 12: Bolingbroke Deanery G rapeVinelincoln.ourchurchweb.org.uk/spilsby/docstore/34.pdf · 12th Stickford Fete & Craft Fayre C O F F E E M O R N I N G S Every Saturday 10am ... David Frasers

12

there was a greater need for good quality education where children are trained not only to be excellent academically but with the moral character to address the disorganisation and injustices in society that can cause many to live in poverty. The school has now grown to over 200 and this year we seem to have a flood of new applicants, for which we are grateful to God.

In addition to our regular scholarship students, for the first time this year we are partnering with a local Christian orphanage for 7 of their children to attend the school, in the hope that we can help give them a better standard of education and increase their chances of independence and success in the future. Your contributions will greatly assist to defray the costs of having such children in the school. We are also involved in several community development projects in the local area.

We are really encouraged by what the Lord is doing with us here in Ghana, and grateful for the partnership of people such as you back in the UK. May God richly bless you as you faithfully serve him there in Lincolnshire. In Him, Samuel and Sarah Yeboah PS. The project thus far: I must add a few personal ‘thank yous’ to what Sarah & Samuel have said. First of all, to the Mission Group who initiated what was to be a six month project and also to them for inviting me to give a presentation about the School last September, which was well attended and generously supported by a retiring collection – to Father Martin who organised ‘Gleaning Jars’ in several of the churches in our Group, which also brought in a ‘goodly harvest’. - to many individuals and PCC’s who also made considerable donations, and then to Spilsby PCC who after the six months was up, very kindly decided that the proceeds of the Lent Lunches should also go to the School fund, and finally to Sue West who ran a coffee morning which raised £180 – many thanks, Sue.

Although the project is officially over, I am still receiving varying amounts from time to time, with the result that an amazing £1756 has been paid into the School’s bank account in London, so a huge thank you to all concerned. Keep giving if you can, but above all continue to pray for the School. Both are equally valued, Every Blessing Dave Smith

Saints in Every Generation To celebrate the Year of Discipleship across the Diocese there will be a day of activity and reflection in the Cathedral on Saturday 26 September. We will be joined by John Bell from the Iona Community, who is an inspirational speaker and well worth listening to. There will be seminars, discussions, and exhibitions. In addition there will be an opportunity to follow a pilgrimage around the Cathedral exploring different aspects of Discipleship.

This is going to be a fantastic occasion, and it would be a shame to miss out on the opportunity to meet with hundreds of fellow disciples. Individual booking forms are available, but you can just email your details to [email protected]. There is a children’s programme for those aged 2 – 14.

News from Rev’d Fran

Over the summer, I have enjoyed pursuing the subject of BREAD which has cropped up again and again in our Sunday Gospel readings. Lammastide celebrations in Dalby enabled us to explore different crops (I was certainly foxed by a couple of them), whilst enjoying the fruits of cake-making labours.

Then I went away to a Residential Theological Summer School (and yes it was holiday!) where the gourmet evening meals were accompanied by a selection of bread rolls the like of which I had never seen before. This was followed by a trip to the NEC in Birmingham, where the meals were so expensive that after the first night, I simply bought a sliced loaf and made sandwiches for the rest of my trip. After the gourmet meals of the previous week, bread became my staple diet.

Back home, we had plum bread for the Garden Party, and the climax of my forays into the world of bread came with the viewing of Bread Week from the Great British Bake Off – did you see that lion sculpture?

Jesus declared himself to be the Bread of Life, and I certainly prefer to see him as part of my staple diet rather than an artisan loaf, encountered only on special occasions. But he is that too!

GRANTS FOR FULL-TIME STUDENTS

Great Steeping School Trustees are successors to a body created in the nineteenth century to establish, manage and maintain a school in that village. In modern times the Trustees, now a registered charity, have assisted the school by giving grants towards facilities not covered by normal public funding. The Trustees can now also offer limited support in a wider educational field by way of grants towards books and tuition materials to fulltime students whose homes at the time of application are in the ‘Five Parishes’ of Great Steeping, Little Steeping, Irby, Bratoft and Firsby. Students will generally be aged between 18 and 24 and undertaking college-based study leading to recognised qualifications in academic disciplines. Certain professional studies for the chartered institutions such as accountancy or pharmacy may also be eligible. Any offer of grants will be at the absolute discretion of the Trustees. Please write for an application form (giving home and term addresses) to: The Chairman Great Steeping School Trustees c/o Ladybeck View Old Church Lane Great Steeping PE23 5PR

Stickford Flower Festival

This was a very successful weekend, raising £874, thanks to the many visitors who came to visit our village church and admire the flower displays. It was a truly magnificent sight, with displays based on the theme of “Summer Holidays”. Thanks go to Cassie Henderson who organised the flowers and the arranging, with the help of fellow members of Spilsby Flower Club and people from the village, in particular Jill Stewart, Janet Kemplay and Pat Cruikshank. It took two days to arrange the flowers so we are very grateful to these people for giving their time to our event.

Our thanks go to the local businesses in Stickford that supported the Flower Festival – we were overwhelmed by their generous donations.

Also thanks to the larger firms in the surrounding area who donated some of the raffle prizes.
