PUERTO RICANS WIN OVER CHILE IN FIRST TIE-BREAK AT U18 CUP

Havana, Cuba, March 19, 2015 – In the first match which lasted five sets, Puerto Rico suffered

to defeat Chile 25-21, 29-31, 25-19, 22-25, and 15-13 and ended with a 2-1 record in the Pool B

of the III U18 Girls’ Pan American Volleyball Cup.

It was a two-hour and ten-minute game which was defined by the superior attack by the

Puerto Ricans (58-45) and less errors (45-50); precisely the two last ones by the South

Americans caused their sentence.

On the Puerto Rican side, the top scorers were the outside hitter Ivania Ortiz and Paola Salas

(both with 19), followed by their team-mate Dariana Hollingsworth (13) and the captain

Joscelyn Coronel (11); whereas by their rivals, they were Josefa Martí (17) and Amalia Carvajal

(12).

The coach of Puerto Rico, Luis Aponte, despite the victory, was not satisfied as his girls were

quite erratic with a six or seven-missed service average per set.

“In the second where we lost 29-31, we made 22 errors. It means the rivals only need to score

nine points. Thanks to God we ended victorious, with lots of work as the intensity of my team

was weak. We did not do enough to deserve the triumph, although the Chileans also made

faults. Fortunately, at the end, the victory was on our side.

Coronel expressed “I think we were overconfident. We scouted our opponents very well and

then we knew what we had to do. However at certain moment we did not fulfil the

instructions and we let two sets escape. Nevertheless the match was good, every one of us

enjoyed it, and it is another chance to compete.”

Hugo Jauregui, coach of Chile, rated the match as “beautiful between two similar teams.

However the last two errors cost us the triumph. Anyway, we were able to come from behind

twice and tie. Two years ago, the Puerto Ricans also won over us 3-2, but now we are happy as

we have finished in the pool as expected. It has been a good championship so far. We need

more games like today.

Catalina Reyes, their captain, explained “we failed in the decisive points. However we fought

and obliged our rivals to continue playing. Anyway, we want to keep improving in quarter-

finals and not make the same mistakes.”

MEXICO DEFEATS PERU IN ANOTHER CLOSE MATCH

The Mexican team defeated Peru 25-21, 25-21, 23-25, 20-25, and 15-13 to finish tied in win

and loss (1-2) in the preliminary phase of the Pool A at the III Girls’ U18 Volleyball Pan Am Cup.

In the second tie-break match of this tournament which lasted two hours, the most effective

Central Americans in attack were Karla Mirelis (15), Katya García, Karina Flores (11), and

Alondra Amaro (10).

However, a Peruvian, the opposite player, Katherine Regalado, was the top scorer (20),

followed by her team-mates Nicole Abreu and Leslie Leyva (15) and Maricarmen Guerrero (14).

Cuban, Ricardo Naranjo, coach of Mexico, said that ”after two losses they understood what

they used to do at home and at a training camp. I think they have returned to their game and

have recovered particularly their attitude and desire. Sometimes we can have fitness, tactics

and technique, but not heart. Nevertheless today they demonstrated they have the greatest

heart of the world.”

The captain, Katrina Flores, assessed that “it was a match with a lot of surprises. There was a

combination of errors and successes. However we improved our impetus and the new players,

more confident, have started to be felt in the court and we have had a better teamwork. I am

happy and we have another chance to reach a more outstanding place.”

Spaniard, Juan Diego Garcia, coach of Peru, stated that “we committed mistakes as we looked

at the rival too much. Actually we should have looked inside us. When it was attained, we were

able to come from behind and could even have the chance to win it. That’s why I congratulate

them.”

“On the other hand I think we were some conditioned to the Mexican service which at times

was good. We worked on the high ball to minimize our opponent’s options. We took some

risks. On occasions we won and on others we lost. It’s all about as in deed this is a game.”

Nicole Abreu, the captain, expressed that they started much unfocused and a little

overconfident. “Given Argentina had defeated them and we have won over the Argentineans,

it was logic to be able to win. However in the fifth set we did not get it. Nevertheless the event

has not ended and we still have the chance to reach the final.”

DOMINICANS OVERCOME 3-2 THEIR MOST DEMANDING RIVAL: ARGENTINA

Havana, Cuba, March 19, 2015 – The Dominican team had to battle to beat Argentina 21-25,

25-23, 23-25, 25-19, and 15-5 in the third 5-set match which have precisely taken place on the

final day of the preliminary phase of the III Girls’ U18 Pan Am Volleyball Cup at the Coliseum of

the Sports City.

Although the Dominicans only needed to win one single set to assure the first position in the

Pool A, they overcame their opposition imposed by their rivals from the very beginning to win

unbeatably and go directly to semi-finals next Saturday.

The top scorer, of this exciting clash which lasted two hours and nine minutes, was Natalia

Martínez (25), followed by her team-mates Massiel Matos (20), Lisbeth Rosario (14) and Vielka

Peralta (13); whereas by Argentina, Anahí Tosi (23) and María Corbalán (21) tallied double

digits.

It was a difficult game, my girls were a little unfocused while the Argentineans played well

which they did not do against Peru when they lost. So, they are a good team. They control the

ball very well and mine were a little overconfident”, stated the Brazilian, Alexandre Ceccato,

coach of the Caribbean team.

Their captain, Yokaty Pérez, also considered that they entered the court without being really

focused. “It was unbelievable, like never before and when we got the rhythm we lost it again.

It was uncomfortable as Argentina is a team which controls the ball well. They do not make

errors and, if failed, they try to find a solution in the court.”

The South American coach said that “we have just started to play this year at this international

event and today we met an opponent who is among the top in the world. So we are at the

height of the circumstances. Without any doubt they forced us with the service and our

reception and effectiveness in the attack failed. It resulted in lack of concentration. I am not

happy, but satisfied.”

Azul Benítez, the captain, commented that “we knew it was going to be a hard game which we

could have even won, but we did not get it. However we are satisfied with our performance

and we hope win over Chile in quarter-finals tomorrow.”

CUBA WINS POOL B AND LAST AVAILABLE TICKET TO U18 WCH

Cuban team dominated easily Costa Rica 25-2, 25-6, and 25-11, as well as the Pool B and so

they obtained the last available ticket to the world championship on the final day of the

preliminary phase of the III U18 Girls’ Pan American Volleyball Cup.

In 53 minutes, the host team sealed the victory in the unique match of today’s calendar which

ended in three sets where the outside hitter Dairis Pérez (15) and the middle blocker Aliama

Cese (10) had a double-digit tally. On the visiting team, only the opposite player Allison Font

scored 8 of the 19 points which only tallied her team.

Tomás Fernández, local coach, touched, expressed that “we are already in the world

championship. The objective has been accomplished. Hopefully the girls will continue focused

and will move forward to the podium. Today we tried to get the most from our rival. We gifted

the service to make them do the transition to our side to train the counterattack as well as

educate them not to make errors.”

The captain, Aidachi Aguero, enjoyed doubly the triumph and the qualification as it was her

16th birthday. She passed on the joy of the whole team. “We are pretty happy. It is the fruit of

15 months making a great effort when training and of the sacrifice both of the team members

and coaches. Now we will do our best in semi-finals and for the title of the Cup.”

Andrés López, young coach of Costa Rica, recognized that “the rivals treated us well. The

placed the ball to make us play, but we were not able to. There are girls on their nerves even

after the match. However what matters is that they tried to overcome the adversity. It was not

possible, but it was a teaching. We congratulate Cuba for the quota to the U18 WCH and the

excellent organization of this event. We all have gotten a nice impression.”

Mariana Rodríguez, their captain, highlighted the top-level of the tournament and added that

“we came to learn and do our utmost. However we did not do our best. It was reflected on the

teamwork. Nevertheless the event has been an unbelievable experience both in sports and in

the wealth of history of Cuba we have had the chance to learn.”
