Mexico and Dominican Republic to play for the Men’s Final Four title

MONTERREY, Mexico, November 8, 2013. - Host Mexico and Dominican Republic will play for

the I Men’s Final Four Cup Gold medal to take place on Saturday at Nuevo Leon Unido Gym in

Monterrey.

In Friday’s first match, Dominican Republic defeated Venezuela and in the closing match,

Mexico remained undefeated beating Canada.

Venezuela and Canada will have their rematch on Saturday in the Bronze medal match at 2:00

pm local time and the final match between Mexico and Dominican Republic is programmed at

4:00 pm.

“My team knew how to up with the heat, we were with great attitude. Venezuela found our

weaknesses in the second set but we came back strong to finish with the win. I’m glad and

hoping to fight for the gold” indicated captain Heredia of Dominican Republic.

Captain Tomas Aguilera took the opportunity to personally thank Canada for making the

arrangements to be here and about the match he said “Canada pushed harder in the third and

it was a good match; my team is young and improving, it’s important for us to face teams like

them who have superiority in the region. Overall the tournament has shown that volleyball is

well practiced sport in Mexico; as for tomorrow, being undefeated doesn’t mean we’ll take

things overconfident”.

“Our experience definitely made the difference but Venezuelans have lots of potential and

talent, they just finished in sixth place a world championship” indicated Osiel Vasquez.

Mexican Coach Jorge Azair expressed “Canada is disciplined in all categories and we have much

to learn from them, they were stronger in the third to the extent of being up 2 points so by

including Rangel in the lineup, my team gained confidence making less mistakes and being able

to close the match”. He also joined Aguilera in thanking Canada for being in the cup.

DOM 3 VEN 1

Dominican Republic dominated Venezuela 3-1 (25-23, 12-25, 25-22, 28-26) on Friday

afternoon. A strong battle for both teams where Venezuelans where resilient to lose coming

out strong but Dominicans responded stronger to improve their record to 2-1. The fourth set

turned out to be the most exciting so far in the tournament. This concluded the preliminary

round for both; Venezuela will battle for the Bronze Medal of the event and Dominican

Republic awaits the result between Mexico and Canada. Dominicans led 12-10 in the blocking

category and in spikes by 53-48; they also made more unforced errors than those of the

Venezuelan side 33-23. Venezuela led in aces by 5-2. For the Dominican team, Omar Tapia

registered a match high with 22 points, all in spikes, and also closing with double digits were

Pedro Luis Garcia and Elnis Palomino with 16 and 10 points respectively. Venezuela was led by

Luis Arias with 17 points followed by 14 points by Jonathan Quijada and 11 points by Willner

Rivas.

Mexico, host of the Men’s Final Four Cup won 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 27-25) against Canada to

enter the competition’s final match undefeated. This was Mexico’s third consecutive win to

finish the preliminary round with 3-0 win-loss record and faces Dominican Republic in the title

match. Canada had difficulties holding together but in the third set they did better job in

receiving and maintained a very tight score. Mexico had advantage in blocking (10-6), in kills

(44-31) and in service points (3-2). Tomas Aguilera topped Mexico’s offense over the net with

12 points while Jesus Valdes chipped in with 11 points and Samuel Cordova with 10. Canadian

Dane Pischke was their best scorer with 14 points.

México y República Dominicana disputarán el título de la Copa Varonil Final Four

MONTERREY, México, 8 de noviembre de 2013.- El anfitrión México y República Dominicana

disputarán la medalla de oro de la I Copa Varonil Final Four a desarrollarse el sábado en el

Gimnasio de Nuevo León Unido de Monterrey.

A primer hora del viernes, República Dominicana derrotó a Venezuela y en el juego de cierre,

México permaneció invicto al vencer a Canadá.

Venezuela y Canadá tendrán la revancha el sábado en el juego por la medalla de bronce a las

2:00 pm hora local y la final entre México y República Dominicana está programada para las

4:00 pm.

“Mi equipo supo aguantar la presión, entramos con buena actitud. Venezuela encontró

nuestras debilidades en el segundo set pero supimos reponernos con fuerza para cerrar

ganando. Estoy contento y espero pelear por el oro” indicó el capitán Heredia de República

Dominicana.

El capitán Tomás Aguilera aprovechó para agradecer personalmente a Canadá por hacer los

arreglos para estar acá y acerca del juego dijo “Canadá presionó más en el tercer set y fue un

buen encuentro; mi equipo es joven y está mejorando, es importante que nos enfrentemos a

equipos como ellos que tienen jerarquía en la región. En general el torneo ha mostrado que el

voleibol se juega bien en México; para mañana, el estar invicto no significa que estemos

confiados.”

“Nuestra experiencia definitivamente hizo la diferencia, pero el equipo venezolano tiene

mucho potencial y talento, recientemente quedaron en sexto lugar en un campeonato

mundial” indicó Osiel Vásquez.

El entrenador mexicano Jorge Azair expresó “Canadá es disciplinado en todas las categorías y

tenemos mucho que aprender de ellos, fueron más fuertes en el tercero al punto de ir 2

puntos arriba, así que ingresamos a Rangel y el equipo tomó confianza cometiendo menos

faltas y pudiendo cerrar el juego”. También se sumó a Aguilera en darle las gracias a Canadá

por estar en la copa.

El anfitrión de la Copa Varonil Final Four, México ganó 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 27-25) sobre Canadá

alcanzando la final de forma invicta. Este fue el tercer triunfo consecutivo para México,

finalizando la ronda preliminar con record 3-0 en juegos ganados y se enfrentará a República

Dominicana por el título. Canadá tuvo deficiencias para mantener el ritmo pero en el tercer set

tuvo un mejor desempeño en la recepción y mantuvo el marcador apretado. México tuvo

ventaja en el bloqueo (10-6), en ataques (44-31) y en puntos de servicio (3-2). Tomas Aguilera

encabezó la ofensiva de México sobre la red con 12 puntos, mientras que Jesús Valdés aportó

11 puntos y Samuel Córdova con 10. El canadiense Dane Pischke fue su máximo anotador con

14 puntos.
