Mexico undefeated at Men’s Final Four

MONTERREY, Mexico, November 7, 2013. - Hosts Mexico continues their winning campaign on

the second day of actions at the I Men’s Final Four Cup taking place at the Nuevo Leon Unido

Gym in Monterrey, Mexico.

Also with victory was Dominican Republic defeating Canada in the first match of the day, while

the home team downed Venezuela; both teams with a straight set win. Friday’s matches,

Dominican Republic facing Venezuela and Canada against Mexico, will determine the first and

second place of the round-robin phase who will meet on Saturday to battle for the gold.

Captain for Dominican Republic, Gerardo Aquino and best known as “Heredia” was excited for

their win, he said "the score was very close but we came out to win after yesterday’s loss. With

our strong serves we were able to find Canada’s flaws making it easier for us to block and

attack better”.

“Our opponents are young and developing as well as us which in occasions contribute in the

loss of concentration which happened today in the third set. Our defense was precise in crucial

points and that helped us comeback to take the win” said Mexican captain Tomas Aquino.

“I’m an admirer of Canada’s technique in blocking” began saying coach Osiel Vasquez, “and

because of their blocking my team needed to be strong in serving. Today’s task was winning so

we could thing in being in the final match. I’m happy with the response of my guys.

“Today’s chat with the team focused on Venezuela’s customary performance which is much

better of what we saw yesterday and they definitely proved it. As for Mexico, it’s customary to

see young teams relax when winning turning this in overconfidence that develops in anxiety,

we experienced that in the third but our more experienced players managed to take control”

indicated coach Jorge Azair.

DOM 3 CAN 0

Dominican Republic earned their first win at the I Men’s Final Four Cup defeating Canada in

straight sets 25-22, 25-22, 25-21. Canadians began dominating but the Dominicans tied the

actions to 20 points in the first set and from there on became unstoppable. A fine spectacle

and with this result things turn interesting with both teams standing with 1-1 win-loss record.

Dominican Republic held a huge advantage in service points by 10-4 while the other categories

weren’t significant with difference of only one point for the winners: spikes (38-37) and blocks

(9-8). The top scorer of the match was Pedro Luis Garcia of Dominican Republic with 18 points,

including 4 aces, helped by Omar Tapia with 16 points and Elnis Palomino with 13 points. For

the Canadian side, Steve Brinkman was the best scorer with 8 points, joined by Jeremie Lortie

also with 8 points.


MEX 3 VEN 0

Mexico downed Venezuela 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 26-24) for their second win. Coming from behind

in the third set by five points, hosts Mexico prevailed as Venezuela wanted to extend the

match a little longer. Mexico is the only team undefeated with a 2-0 win-loss record while

Venezuela drops to 0-2. Mexicans had superiority by 40-28 in spikes and 4-3 in service points,

and Venezuela was better in blocking by 8-3. Samuel Cordova scored 11 points including 3

blocks for the Mexican team and Tomas Aquino tallied 10 all in spikes. Venezuela’s Luis Arias

was their best scoring 14 points.

México invicto en la Copa Varonil Final Four

MONTERREY, México, 7 de noviembre de 2013.- El anfitrión México continúa su campaña

ganadora en el segundo día de acciones de la I Copa Varonil Final Four que se celebra en el

Gimnasio Nuevo León Unido de Monterrey, México.

También con victoria, República Dominicana derrotó a Canadá en el primer encuentro del día,

mientras que el equipo local venció a Venezuela; ambos en tres sets seguidos. Los juegos del

viernes, República Dominicana frente a Venezuela y Canadá ante México, definirán al primer y

segundo lugar de la ronda preliminar, quienes pelearán por el oro el día sábado.

El capitán de República Dominicana, Gerardo Aquino mejor conocido por “Heredia” estaba

“Nuestros rivales son jóvenes y en proceso de desarrollo así como nosotros, lo cual en

ocasiones contribuye a perder concentración y que hoy sucedió en el tercer set. Nuestra

defensa fue precisa en puntos cruciales y nos ayudó a remontar para el triunfo” dijo el capitán

mexicano Tomás Aquino.

“Soy un fiel admirador de la técnica del bloqueo canadiense” empezó diciendo el entrenador

Osiel Vásquez “y por ello nuestro equipo necesitaba un saque fuerte. Hoy la meta era ganar

para optar a disputar la final. Estoy contento con la respuesta de mis muchachos.”

“La charla de hoy se enfocó en el desempeño usual de Venezuela el cual fue mucho mejor hoy

de lo que pudimos ver ayer y definitivamente se comprobó. En cuanto a México, es común que

equipos jóvenes se relajen cuando van ganando lo que se convierte en exceso de confianza y

que termina en ansiedad, eso lo vivimos hoy en el tercer set pero los jugadores con más

experiencia tomaron el control” indicó el entrenador Jorge Azair.

República Dominicana se adjudicó su primera victoria en la I Copa Varonil Final Four

derrotando a Canadá en sets seguidos 25-22, 25-22, 25-21. Los canadienses arrancaron

dominando pero los dominicanos empataron en el punto 20 del primer set y de allí fueron

imparables. Un buen espectáculo y con este resultado las cosas se ponen interesantes ahora

que ambos equipos llevan record de 1-1 en juegos ganados. República Dominicana tuvo una

gran ventaja en puntos de servicio por 10-4, en tanto que las otras categorías no fueron

significativas con diferencia de solo un punto para los ganadores: ataque (38-37) y bloqueo (9-

8). El líder en anotaciones del juego fue Pedro Luis García de República Dominicana con 18

puntos, incluyendo 4 puntos de servicio, ayudado por Omar Tapia con 16 puntos y Elnis

Palomino con 13 puntos. Para el lado canadiense, Steve Brinkman fue el mejor anotador con 8

puntos, acompañado por Jeremie Lortie con 8 puntos también.

MEX 3 VEN 0

México se impuso ante Venezuela 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 26-24) para su segundo triunfo. Viniendo

de atrás en el tercer set por cinco puntos, el anfitrión México venció a Venezuela que esperaba

extender el juego por más tiempo. México es el único equipo invicto con marca de 2-0 en

juegos ganados mientras que Venezuela cayó a marca 0-2. Los mexicanos fueron superiores

por 40-28 en ataques y 4-3 en puntos de servicio, y Venezuela fue mejor en el bloqueo por 8-3.

Samuel Córdova anotó 11 puntos incluyendo 3 de bloqueo para el equipo mexicano y Tomás

Aquino aportó 10 todos de ataque. El venezolano Luis Arias fue el mejor anotador de su

equipo con 14 puntos.
