Goal: Working towards a safe and sustainable use of Bokashi so the comapnies mineral cycles can be closed Bokashi: Bokashi is the Japanese word for “well fermented organic material”. By fermenting crop residues, straw and / or slurry these are converted in an organic fertiliser. Unlike composting, fermentation takes place under low-oxygen conditions and releases zero CO 2 emissions. For the production of Bokashi active micro-organisms, a mixture of bacteria, fungi and yeasts are added. Furthermore, clay minerals and seashell lime are to be added (e.g. sieve ground). Goal: Working towards a safe and sustainable use of Bokashi so the comapnies mineral cycles can be closed

Bokashi: Bokashi is the Japanese word for “well fermented organic material”. By fermenting crop residues, straw and / or slurry these are converted in an organic fertiliser. Unlike composting, fermentation takes place under low-oxygen conditions and releases zero CO2 emissions. For the production of Bokashi active micro-organisms, a mixture of bacteria, fungi and yeasts are added. Furthermore, clay minerals and seashell lime are to be added (e.g. sieve ground).

Method: · Bokashi production at pilot and commercial farms – Flevoland: waste and straw, Limburg: manure and straw – Determining fertilising value – Determining killing germs

· Companies tasting test strips: – 2013 potatoes, 2014 onions – Different types of manure – Investment Terms – Quality Measurements – Measuring nitrate gradient, soil and crop – Within the law

· Consistent construction demo practice: – Implementation test results in practice – Testing applicability in practice

Activities: · Regional and national field trips · Demo days · Evening discussions

Why: Bokashi production is already used but there are still many questions:· Effect of releasing nitrate· Effect on nitrate leaching to groundwater· Phytosanitary security
