Boise State’s Foundational Studies

Program was implemented in fall 2012

to replace the former Core

Curriculum. The new program offers

an integrated and shared experience

that unifies the diverse student body

and expands students’ awareness of

themselves and their world.

Students across campus benefit from

the expertise of Boise State’s talented

faculty. Since 1990, a Boise State

professor has been named Idaho

Professor of the Year 11 times by the

Carnegie Foundation for the

Advancement of Teaching. Faculty

also are recognized as national and

international experts in fields ranging

from cancer research and foreign

policy to forensic DNA.

The Honors College is a small community of highly motivated scholars from every major and background. It is aimed at students who want small discussion-based classes, the chance to study abroad, the ability to improve as communicators and thinkers or the opportunity to meet Nobel Prize winners in one semester and go white water rafting in another.

In short, the Honors College is for students who want a small college education while benefitting from the resources of a large university.

THE SCIENCE OFLEARNING As a STEM major I have found many programs that help me succeed in my academic career. Being involved with engineering organizations and clubs has given me the chance to attend conferences in Orlando, Chicago and Seattle, which may open doors for internships or scholarships. There are so many opportunities at Boise State.

STEM STATION NASA IDoTEACH

Boise State’s STEM Station connects students to the resources they need. The office engages STEM faculty and students in research and service–learning projects addressing energy, environment, education and other challenges.

It also is a central office for coordinating National Science Foundation and other STEM- related programs on campus and throughout Idaho.

Boise State students have participated in NASA’s STEM and pre-service teacher training, student research teams have participated in NASA’s Microgravity University three times and students and graduates are working at NASA centers across the country.

IDoTeach is designed to recruit a largely untapped pool of talented Idaho college students majoring in STEM subjects into secondary education careers.

Surveys have shown the need for approximately 500 math teachers and 400 science teachers in Idaho in the near future. Through the IDoTeach program, underclass STEM majors who are interested in teaching are trained and have the opportunity to teach fundamental math and science lessons to elementary and junior high school students.

BOISE STATE SPEAKS DIGITAL

From efforts to digitize arts and humanities primary sources to the use of iPads, GIS and game design in the classroom, students are graduating with an increased understanding of cutting-edge technology.

All centrally located classrooms are equipped with wireless access, half of the classrooms are set up for lecture capture, software allows faculty to publish lectures to the web and all University Foundation 100 courses include a student-created digital media component.

RAPTOR RESEARCH

STEM

• Boise State’s carbon footprint is among the smallest of all universities in the country.

• The campus Energy Research Policy makes infrastructure more energy efficient.

• Sustainability efforts like alternative transportation pro-grams, recycling and the use of biofuel help “the blue” stay green.

Boise State is the only university in the United States to offer a master of science degree in raptor biology.

In addition, the nonprofit Idaho Bird Observatory, a trapping and banding station, offers opportunities to study raptor migration. The IBO monitors migratory birds and teaches the public about their greater ecological significance. Each January, the IBO sponsors Bald Eagle Days at the Barber Pool Conservation Area along the Boise River.

oise State has a dynamic

graduate and non-traditional student

population. Master’s and doctoral

programs are offered in disciplines

ranging from anthropology and

geophysics to nursing and social work,

with lots more in between. These

programs include everything from

practice-oriented master’s

programs that prepare students for

leadership roles to research-focused

Ph.D. programs that develop the next

generation of scholars. Both graduate

and undergraduate students at Boise

State work with faculty on research

initiatives. These hands-on experiences

both enhance and expand a student’s

education and prepare them for

real-world experiences. Graduate

student defenses are open to the

public and are advertised at

gradcoll.boisestate.edu/defenses/.

Several faculty members in the university’s MFA in Creative Writing program

are published authors. Their books have been recognized on several “best” lists,

including Publishers Weekly, Amazon.com and Entertainment Weekly.

GRADUATE & NON-TRADITIONAL STUDENT PROGRAMS

Returning students with 60 or more college credits and five years of life

experience can earn a degree through the Bachelor of General Studies

program. The program’s flexible curriculum allows adult students to

maximize credits already earned and shorten the time needed to complete

the degree. Visit sspa.boisestate.edu/generalstudies to learn more.

The Division of Extended Studies offers online certificates, degree programs

for adult learners, personal enrichment courses through the Osher Lifelong

Learning Institute, workshops and educational travel programs. It also

oversees intersession courses between fall and spring semesters, courses

offered at other sites across Southwest Idaho, summer school and the

AfterWork evening and weekend degree program.

he most pressing need in higher education today is funding for our

brightest and most gifted students. Scholarships allow high-ability students

to realize their potential for becoming tomorrow’s artists, researchers,

policymakers and thought leaders, regardless of their ability to pay.

Scholarships play a key part in making the dream of college accessible to

students from all walks of life. Boise State is keenly aware of the need to

provide high quality education that is also affordable.

Financial concerns are the top reason students leave Boise State before

earning their degree. And many, who may be unlikely to leave the area for

financial or cultural reasons, opt out of college altogether due to their

inability to pay.

Scholarships ensure that the best and most deserving students become and

remain Broncos, that they have the means to reach their goals and that they

succeed to their fullest ability. Private support for scholarships is the

cornerstone in this effort.

SCHOLARSHIPS CHANGE LIVES

INVESTING IN STUDENTS My scholarship was awarded based on how well I competed for the Talkin’ Broncos Speech and Debate Team. Representing the university across the country allowed me to become more involved on campus and to truly fall in love with Boise State. It also has propelled me as a candidate for various internships and experience abroad.
