BOIAN DABOV M.Arch, h.BAS 4SUMMARYOf significant importance in my professional contributions as an Architect, is my devotion to further the understanding, empathy, and coexistence between human beings. Through the application of well-informed design, seeking relevance to the social, economic, and environmental conditions of a given project, we can support the relationships between built environments and the people who occupy them. Working together, we can embrace our fragile position in the universe, and through collaboration, we can create a better future for both our local and global communities.

Using the archetype of the Greek agora and stoa, this thesis seeks create a language for a hybrid public architecture as a basis for defining a series of new productive public spaces. This vision for the downtown core of Galt, within the city of Cambridge, Ontario, will supplement or replace underutilized public parking lots and other public spaces relevant to the identity of the city, with informal public spaces and supportive market structures, all meant to attract and sustain pedestrian activity and exchanges. Influenced by theories of absolute architecture (Pier Vittorio Aureli), spaces of appearance (Hannah Arendt), studies on sensory driven nature of animal interaction (Edward T. Hall), and various precedent studies on the design and function of public spaces and supportive markets, this thesis speculates on the ability of a new pedestrian fabric to support future growth in the city. A hybrid public architecture will present these future public environvments as places for harmonious political and economic relationships between the diverse citizens of Cambridge.

meditation chapel 12
The Cambridge Meditation Chapel is a multifaith facility that explores the basis of the our relationships with community, our planet, and the universe beyond. The form of the building began by contrasting the explicit verticality of the eternal coordinates, by submurging the program into the earth, such that the experience is one that is both apart from the city, and a part of the city.

museo del tevere 14
The Tiber river in Rome, Italy, is an element of boundary, but more importantly, an element of connection. The design for the Museo del Tevere uses four main walls, with a central spine acting as an infrastructure/service corridor, as well as the main circulation connecting the exhibits. The museum acts as a place for cultural exhibition related to the Tiber river and its history.

ministry of culture 16
The design for a government office building with integrated public functions began with the organization of the program elements around the urban context. The proposed Ministry of Culture building is adjacent to several prominent government buildings, including the Provincial Parliament. The site relationship influenced the use of a public podium typology, with an office tower on the west side, and a public auditorium on the east.

crow’s dance 20
A group project intended to pursue the effect of animal instincts and our lost spiritual connection to the wild. The installation involved the provocation of the crow’s curiousity towards interaction with the world around it, by first attracting students to a very transient feast, upon which a playful choice will be presented. Do you act or do you observe?

soft-boundary 22
A representative intervention proposed for Sri Lanka’s Trincomalee Bay where river pollutants and sediments are constantly deposited. A synthetic field is proposed as an active membrane that functions to both gather and collect sediments and pollutants in the water, helping to maintin the local fishing communities by ensuring access to the bay during extreme flooding.
