Bogdan Maglich: Early Career, University of Liverpool and Bruno Pontecorvo. Bogdan Maglich a.k.a. Maglid, started his career in nuclear physics at age 19 as assistant to Pavle Savitch, the co-discoverer of nuclear fission who, together with Irene Joliot –Curie, first observed the fission fragment lanthanum, when bombarding uranium with neutrons at the Institute Curie du radium in Paris in 1938. Savitch returned to Belgrade, Yugoslavia after WWII and built Institute for nuclear sciences in Vinch, with the support of French physicists and of Yugoslavia’s President Tito, whose telecommunications officer Savitch was throughout the partisan guerilla warfare 1941-5. It is still a mystery why Joliot and Savitch did not share the Nobel Prize with Hahn and Strassman who confirmed uranium fission in 1939. Maglich’s first published paper reporting his methods for neutron production with 1.4 MeV accelerator published in ATOMICS, London in 1954 although he never submitted it to the publisher; it was reproduced by ATOICS from an internal report in the institute’s Bulletin which had been sent to publishing houses in Europe with permission to republish. At that time, Vincha Institute had its first American visitor from the US Atomic Energy commission, MIT’s Professor Bernard Feld. A Manhattan project alum, Feld offered research assistantship to Maglich a, but he had to decline this tantalizing offer. He was already admitted as student for doctorate at the University of Liverpool, where the largest cyclotron in Europe was just built. Bruno Pontecorvo then considered number one European experimental nuclear physicist and personal friend of Savitch of long standing, had just been appointed professor at Liverpool and would be Maglich’s thesis advisor. When Maglich arrived in London, on his way to Liverpool, all newspapers had on their cover pages “Atom spy escapes to Russia!” It turned out to be Maglich’s professor-to-be Pontecorvo. Maglich obtained M.Sc. at Liverpool six months later and arrived to MIT in January 1956. First time he met Pontecorvo at an International conference on High Energy Physics in Dubna, near Moscow as a member of CERN delegation in 1964; and several times since. Pontecorvo was not an atomic spy. He had worked on nuclear reactors only and had no access to nuclear weapons in England or Russia. Pontecorvo’s decision to defect to Russia was made on ideological grounds when the McCarthy hearings reached Britain. After Stalin’s death, he was offered a position when visiting Italy, but returned home to Moscow. 1

Following up Maglich's lecture on Self-Colliding orbits, of pions and muons, Dirac approached Maglich saying “But this is an entirely new physics!” Dirac suggested Anthony Colleraine, his son-in-law, to join Maglich’s research team.
