Boerner News 2016 Bloom Season is on its way! We are so proud to share… Boerner won 2nd place in the 2016 All-American Selections (AAS) landscape design competition with a geometric design created by BBG Horticulturist, Jessica Cloninger! April 29th Arbor Day Celebration and the official opening day of our 2016 Bloom Season! We will again be planting trees with one of FBBG’s school groups! Each year we welcome community members as well as city & county officials who join us for this fun spring welcome. June 19th Father’s Day: Join us as we honor Dads, Veterans & military personnel with brunch and special exhibit by the Midwest Military Vehicle Association. June 30th Boerner’s FREE summer concert series begins! Every ursday night through August, enjoy a lovely evening of live music in the Gardens! Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra will kick off our summer concert series. Bring a picnic dinner or purchase concessions from Zilli Hospitality Group! Our Fairy Garden, which debuted in 2015 in our Herb Garden*, will be a wonderful adventure again this year! Check out these FBBG & BBG Fairy Garden-themed events: July 17th FBBG’s Enchanted Evening: Children of all ages dress up as flower fairies or garden gnomes for this whimsical evening in the gardens! The 2016 Tulip Forecast Horticulturists: Ben Habanek & Isaac Palmer 18,000 tulips have been planted around the Gardens this year! Watch for their bright and vibrant colors! The Education & Visitor Center’s Plantings: Horticulturist: Ben Habanek is year’s plantings will be bold and feature bright tropical colors and foliage plants with huge leaves! Watch for the ai Giant, a tropical perennial with green leaves that can exceed 3ft wide! And the Zebrina Rojo, a banana plant with dark red variegation that will hopefully grow taller than 10ft! The Trial Garden Horticulturist: Jessica Cloninger e Garden will showcase all 12 of the AAS (All-American Selections) winners for 2016! Here are a few to watch for: • Salvia Summer Jewel™ Lavender: e very unique purple color attracts many hummingbirds and butterflies while their seeds make tasty treats for goldfinches. • Pumpkin Super Moon F1: e first AAS all-white pumpkin winner! With a ghostly white color perfect for decorating. • Tomato Candyland Red: e first and only currant-type tomato winner, meaning these tomatoes are smaller than cherry tomatoes and are super tasty right off the plant! The Annual Garden: Horticulturist: Isaac Palmer • is is the year of the Petunia! Tons of beautiful brightly colored Petunias have been added all throughout the Garden. • 10,000 tulips were planted in the Annual Garden alone this year! Boerner Receives the MMSD Luminary Award! The award honoring Boerner’s Rainwater Harvesting System, installed in 2009, was presented March 14th.The rainwater harvesting system expanded Boerner’s underground garden irrigation pathways. It continues to provide visitors with aesthetic, eco-friendly ideas for their own yards!

The project, a salute to teamwork and community partnerships was made possible by:• An MMSD grant (Metropolitan Milwaukee Sewerage District). • A partnership/matching grant facilitated by Joel Reinders of Reinders, Inc.* • A Rain Bird International Contest Award facilitated by FBBG. • A grant the from The Green Tree Garden Club, facilitated by FBBG.
