Boeing is growing in the UK. Our employee base has doubled over the last few years to around 1,500. Much of this success is due to the significant expansion of Boeing’s defence interests in the UK. Boeing now has a thriving onshore business—Boeing Defence UK Ltd (BDUK)—providing service and support for Boeing platforms used by the UK Armed Forces: the Chinook helicopters, the C-17 transport aircraft and the British Army’s Apache helicopters.

On the commercial side, Boeing continues to sustain a strong presence. Ten UK airlines operate a total of approximately 330 Boeing aircraft. This represents more than 40 percent of the commercial aircraft operating in the UK. During the past decade, Boeing has received orders for more than 130 aircraft from airlines operating in the UK: British Airways, Ryanair, Virgin Atlantic Airways and Thomson Airways (part of TUI Travel Plc).

Boeing has several UK-based subsidiaries. These include:

•Aviall, aglobaldistributorofaircraftpartswithfacilitiesbased in Stockport and Feltham, Middlesex.

AnEnduringPartnership

Boeing is a significant contributor to the UK economy, delivering outstanding defence capabilities to the Armed Forces through platforms, services and support and helping the aviation industry deliver sustainable growth.

Our customers expect the highest standards of products, services and support. Boeing is committed to meeting their requirements.

Boeing’s long-standing partnership with the UK focuses on our employees, customers, suppliers and research, stretching back more than 75 years. We add value across our network of relationships and Boeing’s enduring presence in the UK ensures that the company is an integral part of the UK’s aerospace and defence community.

Boeing has grown its workforce in the UK considerably in recent years with local hires and strives to remain an employer of choice for the UK workforce.

Furthermore, the UK is a significant supplier of technology and goods to Boeing and the company spends an average of $1 billion (around £630m) a year with more than 250 suppliers across the UK.

Boeing has research relationships with universities in many parts of the UK, including the University of Nottingham, the University of Sheffield, Cranfield University, the University of Southampton, the University of Strathclyde, the University of Cambridge, and the University of Bristol, and works with them to develop cutting-edge technology that delivers new and improved products for our customers across the world.

Boeing’s Value to the UK

A report by independent research organisation Oxford Economicshighlightedthesignificanteconomicbenefitthe company delivers to the United Kingdom.

At the end of 2012, Boeing in the UK had 1,300 direct employees (which has continued to grow to around 1,500 by the end of 2013). The total number of jobs supported by Boeing in the UK economy is, however, considerably greater than that.

AccordingtoOxfordEconomics, thepurchasesBoeingmakes from UK suppliers generates further employment in its Tier 1 suppliers in the UK and their supply chains. This is known as Boeing’s indirect impact. In 2012, Boeing spent $1.2 billion with UK-based suppliers. This spending, and that generated in the supply chain of Boeing’s suppliers, is estimated to have supported more than 9,200 people in employment.

Boeing’s customers purchase engines, seating and interiors for their aircraft from a range of Boeing-approved suppliers based in the UK. These purchases are conducted directly between the airlines and equipment suppliers, and therefore are not included in Boeing’s

supply chain but are a consequence of Boeing’s manufacture of aircraft. This is termed the consequential impact. The impact of these consequential activities is sizable and is estimated to have supported 39,400 jobs in the UK in 2012.

The 10,500 people employed in the UK, either directly by Boeing or in its supply chain, make purchases out of the wages they earn. This wage-financed consumer spending supports further employment in the retail and leisure sectors, and their supply chains. This effect is known as the induced impact. In 2012, Boeing’s induced employmentimpactwasestimatedbyOxfordEconomicsto have amounted to 5,750 jobs throughout the UK.

Thus, Boeing’s activities and presence in the UK in 2012 generated some 55,700 jobs and that figure is expected to continue to grow.

Delivering Defence Capabilities

Boeing Defence UK Ltd. (BDUK) has more than 900 employees at 27 locations throughout the United Kingdom, supporting Ministry of Defence (MoD) and US Department of Defense programmes. Over the past five years, BDUK has consolidated Boeing Defense, Space &SecurityoperationsintheUKandnowgeneratesintellectual property onshore. BDUK also works with selected UK industry partners to deliver improved operational capability and meet evolving customer needs.

Boeing military platforms and sustainment programmes are at the heart of the support Boeing provides to the UK’s Armed Forces, whether in the United Kingdom, on operations, or elsewhere in the world.

AircraftsuchastheBoeing’sC-17,Chinook,E-3Sentry and the Boeing-designed Apache helicopter are extensively used by the UK Armed Forces. The Royal NavyalsousestheScanEagleunmannedaerialsystem.

These aircraft play a vital role and keeping them ready for operations is paramount. Boeing provides a wide range of support services to help customers maintain operational readiness. These include: MAOS-accredited (Maintenance Approved Organization Scheme) maintenance; air worthiness support services; supply chain management;

quality assurance; and engineering design to meet Urgent Operational Requirements. Boeing also offers platform and system upgrades to keep fleets at the cutting edge of available technology.

Support is provided 24 hours a day, every day. Boeing’s goal on programmes such as Chinook Through Life Customer Support, Apache Integrated Operational SupportandC-17GlobemasterIIIIntegratedSustainmentis to deliver the best capability to those on the front line.

The UK’s Ministry of Defence is moving toward a contracting-for-capability model of procurement, and Boeing is ready to provide comprehensive support throughout the life cycle of many critical capabilities. Flexible, innovative contracting allows the incremental upgrade of capabilities, while maintaining interoperability with key allies.

Boeing provides support services both in the UK and deployed in theatre, recognising the imperative operational availability. As industry’s role in providing such services increases, Boeing also recognises that the part it plays in delivering operational capability must be value-for-money. This can be achieved through original thinking about how to do things differently, delivering greater efficiency.

As a delivery partner to the MoD, Boeing understands the needs of its customer and develops a joint vision to deliver successful programmes. The company’s overall performance places it near the top of the Ministry of Defence annual ‘key supplier’ rating report card.

The UK’s Armed Forces operate both the Chinook and Apache.

That rating is based on Boeing’s commitment to achieving quality first time, requirements compliance and delivering on time and on budget.

The ability to reach back into the larger Boeing enterprise in the US and worldwide is fundamental to Boeing’s success. The UK-based team interacts daily with the global Boeing enterprise, tapping into a wealth of knowledge and experience.

Training is a growing business for BDUK with the main focus on supporting the front line, especially through pre-deployment training. BDUK is able to provide hands-on technical expertise, simulation systems and tools, systems architecture and engineering, technical support and systems operations for a wide variety of Boeing and non-Boeing platforms.

Boeing excels in managing a global support chain from the factory to the front line. It has taken the lessons learned from the larger organisation and applied them to the benefit of the UK customer.

Commanders rely on their support chain to execute their mission successfully. Reliable infrastructure is vital if the customer is to make informed and timely decisions. The support Boeing provides through programmes

suchasLogisticNetworkEnabledCapability(LogNEC)is fundamental to providing commanders with timely information to make better decisions and to manage the support chain effectively.

Boeing also works on a number of projects under various CooperativeResearch&DevelopmentAgreementswithboth the UK Ministry of Defence and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), especially in concept development.

Forecasting what technology can enable and where investments might best be made allows BDUK to focus on customer priorities and evolving needs. Through innovative modelling, simulation and experimentation, the Boeing Portal in Hampshire works with customers to evaluate operational concepts and untested capabilities using virtual concepts of operations. Concepts can quickly be turned into developed prototypes, saving time, money and, most importantly, lives.

The commitment of Boeing employees, both here in the UK and around the world, makes a difference on the front line. Our motivation comes from knowing that we are delivering first-class military capability and knowing that soldiers, sailors and airmen benefit from what Boeing does on a daily basis.

EveryaspectofBoeingisgearedtowardimprovingthelevel of support to service personnel on operations. Having aircraft on the flight line in support of the UK’s troops around the world ensures our Armed Forces have the best possible equipment and support.

The Boeing Portal is Boeing Defence UK’s state-of-the art facility that uses advanced

technologies to support customers’ needs to explore and understand requirements in both

the defence and security domains.

The environment is an important issue for all of us. Boeing is committed to zero carbon growth in its offices and factories by 2017, while continuing to increase aircraft production. Boeing continues its leadership role in the commercial aviation industry’s global efforts toward carbon-neutral growth from 2020. Boeing invests aggressively to further improve our products’ environmental performance throughout their life cycle. More than 75 percent of Boeing’s commercial aeroplane research and development contributes to advancing environmentally progressive innovations. Today, Boeing aircraft are as fuel and CO2 efficient as the average train and more efficient than the average car. But while aviation accounts for about two percent of global carbon emissions, air travel is growing and Boeing fully recognises the need for continued action. Boeing already invests in:

Technology,InnovationandEducation

In addition to its own local presence, Boeing has an extensive network of industrial and academic partners and suppliers across the UK. Through these relationships, Boeing is helping to create and sustain thousands of high-grade, high-value jobs in the UK’s aerospace industry and wider economy. Boeing’s investment also stimulates new capital investment in the UK industrial base, which helps companies maintain their competitive edge.

Boeing works with a growing number universities in the UK. They are an integral part of our work and each is focused on a different specific area of research. We value these relationships and they can provide Boeing with innovative new technologies and business concepts, education and training for Boeing employees as well as potential recruits for long-term, high-value careers in the company.

Boeing was the founder company of the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) in partnership with the University of Sheffield. Boeing works with the AMRC to develop advanced manufacturing technologies that will help reduce the cycle time and cost of producing aerospace products while improving their quality and

performance. The AMRC has grown considerably since it was established and now has partners developing new manufacturing technologies that enhance the competitiveness of the UK’s industry across a broad spectrum of sectors, not only aerospace but also marine, automotive, nuclear and medical.

With the University of Cambridge, Boeing has an agreement to conduct a number of research projects in the field of highly networked systems. Cambridge is a recognised leader in IT research and this field is of particular interest to Boeing as it moves toward providing even more integrated solutions to its customers.

Alongside Cranfield University, Boeing is working on a variety of projects that reflect the University’s reputation and expertise in the areas of aviation, aeronautics and aircraft development. One is the design and production of a subscale demonstrator of a Blended Wing Body aircraft, the X-48B/C, with specifications provided by Boeing and

Cranfield’s wholly owned commercial subsidiary, Cranfield Aerospace Ltd. Boeing also helped start the Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) Centre at Cranfield. This consortium, modelled after the successful AMRC at the University of Sheffield, will focus on technologies to revolutionize aircraft health monitoring, prognostics and use of acquired data to manage the system. The children are directly involved in the planting and growing of the trees. Once the saplings reach the correct maturity the trees are planted out in the local community, which is an effective way for children to learn about ecology and for the schools to engage practically with their local communities.

The National Memorial ArboretumTen years ago, the National Memorial Arboretum (NMA), foundedbyDavidChildsandGroupCaptainLeonardCheshire, was opened to the public. In 2007, the public profile of the Arboretum changed when the Armed Forces Memorial was dedicated by the Archbishop of Canterbury in the presence of Her Majesty the Queen: visitor numbers dramatically increased from 65,000 to 300,000. Boeing’s partnership with the National Memorial ArboretumalignswithBoeing’sGlobalCorporateCitizenship objective toward education, community cohesion and environment by assisting in welcoming school visitors to engage with the educational facilities on site. Today, the Arboretum is the UK’s year-round centre for Remembrance; a spiritually uplifting place which honours the fallen, recognises service, suffering and sacrifice and fosters pride in our country.
