Practically everyone loves chocolate. And if you count yourself among those who call them- selves “chocoholics,” then I have GREAT news... This Halloween (and everyday thereafter), indulge yourself and eat some of that savory deliciousness! As it turns out, chocolate may help you get thin- ner and healthier. This surprising news comes on the back of research done earlier this year at the University of California, San Diego. The study, published in the journal, Archives of Inter- nal Medicine, set out to find whether or not eating chocolate regularly had an effect on a person’s weight. Researchers studied 1,000 men and women from the San Diego area and found that those who ate choco- late on a regular basis were actually thinner than those who ate chocolate less often! [1] This was no coincidence, either… The thinner chocolate-eaters were not eating fewer calories than the group who ate chocolate less often. What’s more, they were NOT more active and didn’t exercise more. Scientists don’t know exactly why this is, but one thing’s for sure… eating chocolate could help you keep the love handles at bay. And there’s even better news… this isn’t the first study of its kind! Unfortunately, our health can easily become one of those projects. We start it up in January and as other projects get started throughout the year, our health project is taken out of the cue. Then when something that negatively impacts our health such as bad news from a Doctor, another birthday or a faulty bathroom scale, we get back on the health project wagon. For some this is as predictable as clockwork but for others who seem to be more successful, it’s not a project it’s just something you do. These folks have figured it out. They know that going to the gym, taking that walk or riding that bike is as much a part of their day as getting up and having breakfast. We have a number of these types of members at the gym. Many have been coming for over 10 years and will keep coming for many more. To recognize the dedication they have made to their health and for becoming what we respectfully call “Regulars”, my staff have been going through the thousands of names that have come and gone to identify those that have stayed. We will be starting a Wall of Distinction to proudly pay tribute to those who have persisted beyond what many still define as a project in the making. I look forward to sharing that “project” with everyone very soon.

would have to be done. But for those who LOVE eating chocolate, it’s an excellent way to avoid those killer cravings and keep yourself on track with your diet. And if staying fit and trim wasn’t good enough reason to start eating a little chocolate everyday, here’s an-other: it can keep you HEALTHY! In the findings of one review study, presented at the European Society of Cardiology in Paris, researchers found that eating moderate amounts of chocolate can reduce your risk of developing heart disease by up to 30%! [3] And in another study, presented at the American Academy of Neurology’s An-nual Meeting, scientists found that eat-ing chocolate regularly can help reduce your risk of stroke. [4] It’s believed this is due to chocolate’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory prop-erties. In fact, dark chocolate has more an-tioxidant power than fruits like blue-berries, strawberries and raspber-ries! Pretty impressive, right? So this Hal-loween, when you reach for that sweet, chocolate treat… don’t feel guilty. Know that you’re doing your body (and overall health) good. Just remember that moderation is key, because de-spite all the good news surrounding chocolate, it still packs quite a few calories per gram — a little DOES go a long way. Also, when choosing chocolate, go with DARK choco-late as it provides the most health and craving-busting benefits.

4 Tips To Keep Your Ticker Tickin’ A few simple additions to your everyday diet/lifestyle can help keep your heart healthy for years to come. Here are a few tips you can

1. Use plant sterols and stanols. These are sub-stances that occur naturally in plant-based foods. sels. Laughing helps ease that stress and could poten-tially save your heart! In fact, one study done at the Uni-versity of Maryland School of Medicine suggests that laughter is linked to healthy function of blood vessels and may help protect against heart attack!

Fight High Cholesterol...Naturally

FACT: One in three adults in Canada. has high cholesterol, which can affect anyone at any age, and can negatively impact heart health and cardiovascular function over time. People with high cholesterol have a higher risk of developing heart disease compared to those with optimal levels. Among the culprits are genetics and diet. Some people are predisposed to high cholesterol and produce more of it in the liver, while others get too much from the foods they eat—foods such as bacon, hot dogs, and sausages that also contain high amounts of saturated fat. A 10% reduction of LDL (‘bad’) cholesterol equates to a 10%-20% decrease in heart disease risk.

If you eat foods such as pizza, hamburgers, and steak on a regular basis, you may be increas-ing your chances for developing high cholesterol. The Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation recommends consuming no more than 300 mg of cholesterol a day (with less than 7% of calories from saturated fat) ; those with heart disease should consume less than 200 mg of cholesterol.

Men tend to have higher cholesterol than women. However, after menopause, cholesterol levels in women increase due to a decline in estrogen production.

Boo!

How’s that for a little early Halloween “cheer?” :) As you already know, this month is all

about spooks, ghouls, witches and PLENTY of candy! And while everyone will be treating

themselves to sugary goodness, you need to focus on “treating” yourself with health and fitness.

Here’s what this means…

Most folks never last on their good intentions to get fit and healthy because they view

proper diet and exercise as a sacrifice (or sometimes as a cruel and unusual punishment!). No

wonder so many people fall off the wagon despite their best intentions! Instead, this month

challenge yourself to view your workout and eating regimen as a way to “treat” your body,

mind and soul. Shifting your perspective like this, and finding ways to make living a healthy

lifestyle enjoyable, is what will help you get fit and STAY there for the rest of your life. For ex-

ample...

Got a sweet tooth? Have some of your favorite fruit (or as you’ll see in today’s main article,

have a little chocolate).

Like to eat big meals? Find ways to have the same amount of food with less calories. Maybe

add more veggies and a side salad.

Like to snack? Ditch the potato chips for kale chips or oven-baked sweet potato fries.

Dread exercising? Find ways to make it fun. Being active doesn’t necessarily mean putting in

clean the bathroom! You get the idea...
