WHOSE LIVES MATTER?

The answer to this question depends on whether you are speaking as a disciple of Jesus Christ or a subscriber to certain political beliefs. I’m writing this column as a shepherd of souls who doesn’t really belong to any political party. So YOUR life matters to me as a member of our parish family. I have reason to believe that MY life matters to you because of my efforts to love and serve you over the past 23 years. OUR lives all matter to Jesus Christ in that he took our sins upon himself and died for us so that we could have life in all its fullness. But while ALL LIVES MATTER, the ALL especially includes those who are victims of injustice. BLACK LIVES MATTER not because of a multi-racial movement that espouses violence as one of its strategies, but because all too many people of color have been victims of injustice at the hands of people who are prejudiced. While forms of bias and discrimination can be practiced by members of the same racial family, all too often it is a matter of one racial family against another.

I believe that there is really only one race in the eyes of God and that is the human race. He sent his son into the world not to condemn us for our wicked deeds, but so that we could live in peace together as God’s own people. Many people are understandably angry that a wicked police officer killed a man ON CAMERA. That event set off a maelstrom of protest that tragically provided the occasion for more acts of wickedness by looters, arsons, and destroyers of people’s livelihoods and property. Violence begets violence in a vicious cycle that often prevents of delays the redressing of grievances. Can we move on to solutions that each of us could make steps towards? How about if we make an effort to really befriend individuals from racial families other than our own. It’s much harder to hate someone we’ve sat down at table with. Every Sunday that we respond to God’s call by gathering to worship him, we get to break bread together. For we are one body, one body in Christ, and we do not stand alone. No one can receive a true spiritual benefit from Holy Communion if we have enmity in our hearts for others because of real or perceived misdeeds. How about we focus on our own misdeeds, confess our sins, and seek God’s mercy together?

Online Giving is also available at our web site along with a host of information about the parish. You may also read the bulletin (and past bulletins) on the web page.

Facebook Is A Social Media Platform That We May Use for The Greater Honor and Glory Of God

At St. Andrew’s we don’t encourage the use of FB for the purpose of arguing or debating political and church beliefs. Rather, we make available both a public (accessible to anyone) and a group (accessible mainly to parishioners) page for the purpose of sharing announcements of events and programs and a place from which to Live stream some of our services. Any use which gives honor and glory to God is welcomed and encouraged.

This app is provided to us at no charge from the company that publishes our Sunday bulletins—Diocesan publications. It can be a great tool for locating the daily scripture readings, receiving messages from the parish, access to online giving, prayer requests, etc.

Pray for Friends and Family Who are Very Ill

Intercessory prayers can be very helpful not only for those who are ill but for those who are caring for them. While we are all free to offer prayers for any intention, this particular prayer list is intended for those who have suffered a serious injury or who have fallen very ill. Our prayers can help to get them back on course. Please be sure to call the parish office to let us know when your loved one is on the mend.

Though many have had to close during the pandemic, our Pac a Sac Food Pantry is still open. Our hours of operation are Tuesday and Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. If you, or anyone you know, lives in the Moore School District and is in need of food, please come see us. This includes unemployed parishioners, or those struggling to make ends meet.

THANKS FOR YOUR ONGOING GENEROSITY!

With Ann Grover’s retirement, we are in search of a qualified individual to serve as a part-time Christian Formation Secretary. This position requires the customary office skills, especially the knowledge of Office 365 (Word, Excel, Power Point, Publisher) as well as learning other pieces of software we use day to day. This individual offers secretarial assistance to our Christian Formation Director and to our Youth Ministry Coordinators. A flair for editing our parish website would make candidates even more attractive. Must have good communication skills and an ability to work well with others as we seek to address ourselves to accomplishing the mission of the church.

What Is Alzheimer’s Disease And How Is It Different From Dementia?

Dementia is not a normal part of aging. It is caused by damage to brain cells that affects one’s ability to communicate, which can affect thinking, behavior and feelings. Alzheimer’s is a degenerative brain disease that is caused by complex brain changes following cell damage. It leads to dementia symptoms that gradually worsen over time. As Alzheimer’s advances, symptoms get more severe and include disorientation, confusion and behavior changes. Eventually, speaking, swallowing and walking become difficult. Researchers have been working hard to find ways to prevent, cure or even slow Alzheimer’s disease, but with little success. Family caregiving of older individuals with dementia/Alzheimer’s disease is becoming widespread in the USA and around the world because of the aging of the population. Dementia caregivers feel like they are on the clock 24-7 which can trigger a range of emotions — including anger, fear, frustration and sadness. In the United states there are millions of caregivers with common needs: recognition, counseling, support, information, problem sharing and, in many cases socializing. Therefore, having a place where caregivers can be themselves, share experiences and insights and have the positive input of others in similar circumstances is very important. (www.alz.org/abam/overview.asp)

St. Andrews has three support groups that were requested by members of our parish. We will resume operation of these groups in July. Meetings will take place in the Joyce Center, so we can self-distance if necessary. All support groups will meet at 10:30 following the 9am Mass.

Grief Support group will meet July 12th in the Joyce Center at 10:30

Cancer Support group will meet July 19th in the Joyce Center at 10:30

Care Giver Support group will meet July 26th in the Joyce Center at 10:30

The latest guidelines from the archdiocese make provision for meetings other than Mass. Physical distancing and wearing masks are a requirement in consideration of others. If you would like to schedule a meeting, please call the parish office. Need more information about small groups? Contact Jane in the parish office. [email protected]
