Boca Raton Synagogue • Valuing Diversity • Celebrating UnityPage 3

In line with our Derech Eretz Statement, we mention some examples of how we can be more sensitive toward others and create an even better community. • If you’re feeling unwell or perhaps coming down with a cold or flu, please do not come to shul. It’s not right to possible compromise the

health of members and guests.• There are many members of our Shul that are extremely sensitive and highly allergic to the smell of perfume and cologne. We strongly

encourage you not to use them, or to do so very lightly, as this can cause someone to have an asthma attack or other reaction. All of these Mensch Messages have been submitted to the office. If you have a Mensch Message you would like us to promote, please email us at [email protected]

In the spirit of our mission “Valuing Diversity and Celebrating Unity,” we believe that a community is built on the collective engagement of individuals representing differing perspectives, whether religious, political, or social. As Boca Raton Synagogue is an environment where all of its members and visitors need to feel valued and welcomed, members are required to comport themselves in a manner which reflects mutual respect and a sense of inclusiveness. In our Synagogue, we value debate about pressing issues. This is consistent with the American democratic tradition. Our sages saw the value of arguments conducted L”Shem Shamayim,“ for the sake of heaven, believing that great minds who engage in respectful debate will arrive at better solutions. They valued and welcomed alternate views, as do we.

“Derech Eretz,” good and proper conduct, and mutually respectful dialogue are core values of the Synagogue community. These create a “safe place” for inspiration and spiritual growth, the central purpose of the Synagogue. It is a violation of Jewish law and ethics to use harsh language (vitriol) to demonize or to marginalize people with whom one may disagree. Uncivil expression reflects negatively on our Synagogue as well as on the individuals who engage in such behavior.

Boca Raton Synagogue expects its members to act and to speak with kindness and sensitivity to others. It is only in this fashion that a strong, vibrant, and harmonious community can be created and maintained. Adherence to this policy is a requirement for membership in good standing at the Boca Raton Synagogue.

A CONTINUED CALL TO ACTION TO BRS MEMBERSWe would like to thank you all those that have signed up to assist us guard our gates, but we are still short in numbers.

The only way we can ensure unwanted guests don't enter our premises is by men and women from the BRS community standing with our External Security guards and checking who comes in.

We only need volunteers to commit to two 30-minute shifts once a month on Shabbat. Training is simple and includes an easy-to-follow training booklet.

Our Rabbis have all signed up as have many of our Board of Directors members. Please sign up by contacting Samy Dwek at [email protected]

SETUP YOUR RECURRING PAYMENT PLAN TODAYPlease be advised that the new fiscal year for the Shul has begun! From now through August 31, all payment plans will be divided over the remaining 11 months. If you were previously on a recurring payment plan, it does not automatically renew, a new form MUST be completed.

If you would like to set up your recurring payment plan please contact our bookkeeper, Amy at [email protected], If you would like to discuss anything pertaining to membership, contact Matthew Hocherman at [email protected].

TOMCHEI SHABBAT IS IN IMMEDIATE NEED OF SUMMER FUNDS

We thank all of you who have so graciously given to the Tomchei Shabbat throughout the year. However, our funds are depleted and we need your help to make it through the summer months. We presently have 29 families relying on our program at a cost of $12,500 a month. Every single penny that is collected for our Tomchei Shabbat Fund is given directly to our families in the program with zero overhead costs. The cost to sponsor a family for a month is $500. We ask that you consider sponsoring a family for a month, but please know that donations of any size are greatly needed at this time. The community working together will enable us to continue to provide food for our families that are struggling financially at this time with dignity.

WE ALL BENEFIT FROM THE ERUV-LET’S MAKE SURE TO SUPPORT IT

The Boca Raton Community Eruv is in desperate need of funds. Yearly membership remains at $100 per family. It is possible to sponsor the Eruv for a particular Shabbat for $360. Donations can now also be made through our website www.bocaeruv.org or by contacting Chani Salamon at (561) 392-1026 for more information. Please help, as we ALL benefit from the Eruv. The Eruv is something we all rely on and often take for granted. If you have not yet contributed, please consider doing so in order to ensure that the Eruv can be checked and maintained.

SISTERHOODThe next Sisterhood planning meeting is Monday August 28, at 8:00 pm at the home of Hinda Bramnick ,7659 Newport Terr., Thornhill Estates. Committees are forming now for for Health and Halacha Day and other programs. Our Sisterhood donated over $25k to BRS (including $22k to Tomchei Shabbat) this past year. We need your help to continue the Mitzvot. Questions? Contact Arielle Kieffer at [email protected] and (561) 289-1119 or [email protected].

NEW DAF YOMI WHATSAPP GROUPThere is a network of people who are learning Daf Yomi that shares Daf Yomi resources and ideas each day based on the Daf. If you would like to join the WhatsApp group, please contact Binyamin Muschel at [email protected]. This learning group is for a Refuah Shlayma for all Cholim in our community and in particular Baruch Tzvi ben Rivka Batya.

SPONSORSHIPS AVAILABLE The Shul is currently planning a robust programming calendar for the coming year. If you are interested in sponsoring a speaker or a program at the Shul, please contact Rabbi Philip Moskowitz at [email protected]. Sponsoring events and Shiurim at Shul are a meaningful way to commemorate a Yahrzeit, mark a special occasion, or promote a new business.

SEEKING BRS GREETERSWe want to greet you when you come to BRS. However, In an effort to expand our program, we are looking for additional Greeter volunteers. We're looking for friendly warm people who can help us greet during the holidays and Shabbat morning in the main Minyan. Our program has been around for a few years and we have a strong base of greeters. We have also involved middle school and high school students. If you'd like to learn more about how to be a BRS Greeter, contact Jessica Weiss and Annette Shachter at [email protected]. Co-chairs of BRS Greeter Program

SOCIAL ACTIONFrom Unity Coalition for Israel (UCI): Two U.S.-Israeli industrial teams working on jointly funded missile defense programs are ramping up production of three distinct interceptors that collectively defend against an entire spectrum of threats, from short-range rockets to Iran’s most advanced, medium-range ballistic missiles.Intercepting missiles for all three heavily U.S.-funded missile defense programs — Arrow-3, David’s Sling and Iron Dome — are being built in large part in the United States through a network of prime partners, subcontractors and suppliers that extend across more than 30 of the 50 U.S. states.

“In accordance with congressional mandates and our government-to-government agreements, each one of these [intercepting systems] is being produced at least 50 percent in the United States,” Moshe Patel, director of the Defense Ministry’s Israel Missile Defense Organization, told Defense News.

“It’s not just prime contractors, but a vast network of subcontractors spread out over a large part of the United States of America,” Patel said.According to Patel, U.S.-based work on all three interceptor programs is transitioning from low-rate initial production, or LRIP, to full-rate production. “We’re in the final phases of LRIP for all these systems; and we’re very proud of the amazing cooperation at both the government-to-government and industry-to-industry levels,” Patel said.

שבת פרשת ראהShabbat Parshat Re’eh

When the Torah prohibits inflicting self injury as a form of mourning, it introduces the prohibition with the phrase, בנים אתם לה' אלוקיכם – “You are children to Hashem, your God.” Rashi explains that since we are meant to be a reflection of Hashem in this world, we are to conduct ourselves in a manner that evokes a sense of respect and honor for Hashem – אתם ראויים להיות נאים.Maharal explains that Rashi is hinting to a deeper idea as well. He explains that since Hashem is ‘one’ – He traits are not exclusively those of din (judgment) but also include rahamim (mercy). If He only represented din, then all merciful acts and would seemingly stem from another source and would contradict his divine unity. He explains that when a person inflicts bodily injury upon himself after the loss of a relative, he is effectively stating that din is all that exists in this world and he therefore is destroying part of his body to reflect this harsh reality where no mercy or positive divine emanations have relevance. Such a practice is inherently denying Hashem’s unity and control over all aspects of nature and history.Sometimes we tend to think of religion and Hashem’s interest in us merely as relating to our souls and our more spiritual aspirations and actions. Maharal is reminding us that are actions, even those that appear quite mundane and ‘this worldly’ can have cosmic consequences. It’s true in the opposite, positive direction as well. When we perform mitzvot, we are reaffirming Hashem’s hashgahah (providence) and interest in us.
