Gerry Cassella will be doing an overview of our Mem-bers Plant Table with some judging tips and helpful culture information on all of the plants our members bring in to the meeting for ribbon judging.
Gerry is the Curator of Or-chids at the Staten Island Botanical Gardens and is an honorary lifetime mem-ber of the Greater New York Orchid Society, the Long Island Orchid Society and the Staten Island Or-chid Society. He has been a member of the American Orchid Society and has served as an AOS judge for
over 25 years. Gerry has taught orchid courses at the Bronx Botanical Gar-dens, Staten Island Botani-cal Gardens and New York City Continuing Education.
Gerry joined members of the West Palm Beach Judg-ing Center at our show in February and helped award many of the 14 AOS awards given out at our show in addition to the Ribbon and Trophy Awards. Bring in your plants for display on the Members Plant Table at our meeting and hear Gerry give a critique of the char-acteristics that make or
break an award winning plant. It’s always fun to look at a plant through a “judge’s eyes”. Let’s show Gerry what great orchid hobbyists belong to BROS and bring in lots of plants.
A beautiful raffle table will round out the evening.
See you at the meeting,
Jackie Wood,

Dear Members,
Few realize it, but BROS can be equated to a fine wine, aging makes it bet-ter. The recent show was our 17th and we have got-ten better and better! Ku-dos to Laurie Haarsgaard
for heading up a fantastic show. Every vendor was ecstatic - many almost sold out of ALL orchids! They all had smiles on their faces!
To top off the weekend, our show garnered a
whopping 14 awards! The members table received 4 alone - led by Susan Bar-buty's spectacular Paph. St. Swithin! It was awarded 86 points for a well de-

ASpecial Thank You to the Volunteers From Laurie Haarsgaard, 2008 Show Chair
This was my first time as Show Chair for the BROS Annual Show and Sale. It was a lot of coordina-tion, a lot of time and effort and a lot of Fun. But I did not put on the show by myself. It took so many of you to help, support and get involved right along with me. I could not have done this with-out YOU.
A very big thank you to Susan and George Barbuty who I think started cooking 2 weeks before. Their special touch makes the presentation of all the food so appetizing not only from the Judges Breakfast and Lunch, but to the buffet lunch they set out for the Vendors and Volunteers. Thank you to Jackie Wood for being there to answer my questions and lend help in between coordinating the Volunteers for the WOC. Thank you to Alice Dobrin who is magnificent in gathering up the Volun-teers, getting them to their locations and pitching in to relieve the volunteers as necessary. Thank you to Sue Fisher-Tipton who spent 2 days inspiring Orchid Shoppers to buy Raffle Tickets. A Huge Thank You to one of our New Members, Tony Juliano. Tony is a ‘jack of all trades’ who not only set all the tables to be skirted in record time, put out street signs in the middle of traffic and even helped us hook up the overhead projector for the speakers. His music let our customers feel so wonderful they could not resist buying so many Orchids. Thank you to Kelly Ford for registering the plants for the Plant Table. It is not easy to ensure you have the proper name so the judges can correctly judge. Your layout of the Plant Table was beautiful to say the least. Thank you to Denise Libby who dedicated her time for 2 days to support our Show and especially for finding the clips to hold the skirts on the tables (what a time saver). Thank you to Lorraine Conover, one of our new Board Members, who spent 4 days helping with setup, filling in where needed and even helping the ven-dors when they needed a break. Thank you to Dave Hogaboom. Dave is always there to lend a hand and stay involved. And a loving thank you to my Husband, Tom Haarsgaard, who took off work to run around and coordinate tasks for the Show. He was always there for me when I needed a hand to get things done. Thank you to our wonderful speakers, Myles Burack, Mark Peterson, Hyla Levine, Seymour Bartlett, Alex Lamazares of Orchidmania who all drew a crowd and wowed their audience with their knowledge of Orchids. And of course, thank you to all the other volunteers that gave their time to make our 2008 Show another BIG SUCCESS.
