The Bill Young family of Lively doesn'tlook forward to the abominable snowmanrearing his frosty head each year.It's not that they don't like the cold andsnow of winter. It's just that - well, theyhave this summer camp, and after all,summer camps are for summer. And,when a camp is like the Young camp -treasured as a family retreat for "hangingloose" - it's hard to lock it up justbecause old man winter is stepping onyour heels.

Just the same, every year when theleaves turn and there's a chilly nip in theair, Bill and his family tuck their camp infor the long, cold winter and bid it fare-well until next summer.

Bill, a foreman at Creighton mine, andwith Inco since 1953, boards up thewindows, puts his boats, motors, andequipment in storage and packs his toolsin the car.

His wife, Clarene, empties the propanerefrigerator and cupboards of food sup-plies and strips the linen from the beds.

Sally, their 15-year-old daughter, slipsoff in one of the boats to say goodbye toher favorite island at the end of the bay.She spent much of her summer there, in atree-house, just reading and enjoyingnature.

Cameron, 11, nips down to the nearbyswamp where he hunted all summer forbullfrogs, wishing now for some sort ofassurance that they'll be there next yearwhen he returns.

And Nancy, six years old, takes one lastride on her tire swing and then shufflesthrough her sandbox.

A little later, when the boats are indrydock and the odds and ends whichmust go back into town for the winterare packed in the car, the Youngs light afire in their Franklin fireplace and warmtheir hands. They munch on the last ofthe bread and cheese, sip hot chocolate,and, on this closing camp day of 1974,talk about this summer and summerspast.

The Youngs have a warm feeling fortheir summer camp in the heart of bush-land 14 miles east of Espanola - andno wonder. They built it themselves.

Bill bought the property, located onHannah Lake, through the Department ofLands and Forests 10 years ago, and heand Clarene, armed with a "buck saw",cleared the land themselves. Since Bill

had never even built a doghouse, hewasn't sure how things were going toturn out, so he built their outhouse first,knowing if he couldn't build that, they'dhave to quit. But the outhouse was anoverwhelming success and, with the helpof family and friends, the Youngs soonhad a summer camp. Clarene evenhelped put the shingles on the roof, inspite of her fear of heights. Every nightwhen she closed her eyes, she'd seeherself falling off that roof.

They'd built a homey three-bedroomcabin, measuring 20 by 30 feet. "It wasas big as we could afford and wantedat the time," says Bill. They had an ice-box and Coleman lanterns and, for thefirst year, there was no heat. Then, theFranklin fireplace was installed and itsoon became the gathering place for theYoung clan.

There's still no electricity at the camp,nor is there running water. Sally claimsshe's the running water, since she mansthe bucket brigade that runs to the lakefor water when needed.

There is no indoor toilet, bathtub, orshower - young Cameron especiallythinks that's great.

Bill once brought a battery-operatedtelevision set to camp, but the kids con-sidered it an intrusion. "They toldus the 'boob tube' didn't belong withthis camp and that was fine with us,"says Bill.

The Youngs enjoy being way off in thebush, with more than 10 miles of bumpydirt road between themselves and"civilization".

Says Clarene: "They're talking aboutbringing electricity in, but we don't wantit." They don't want a telephone either.

Nope - the Voungs like everythingjust the way it is. They spend nearlyevery summer weekend and the greaterpart of their summer vacation at the campwhere there's peace and communication.

"We can talk to the children out here,"says Clarene, "whereas communicationis more difficult in town where the kidsare always busy with school and otheractivities.

On rainy days, the family plays games- cards, chess, or just about any groupgame.

Everyone drives the two boats, thoughNancy needs a bit of help from daddy

with the steering; they all water-ski,with Nancy riding shotgun most of thetime.

The kids learned to swim at the camp;there's a good beach and a dock fordiving.

As they watch the fire burn down intheir fireplace on this closing camp day,they remember the toasted marshmallows,the bonfires, feeding the chipmunks,'watching the animals and picking berriestogether.

Nancy thinks of swinging on her tire.Cameron thinks of hunting partridge andducks in the early fall with his dad. Sallythinks reading always seems a lot betterat camp somehow. Dad thinks withpride of the sleep camp and steam bathhe built this summer, and mom - shethinks of the close talks and sitting forhours gazing into the fire.

Yes, the Youngs hate to close thedoors of their camp when winterapproaches. But they know they'll beback again - next summer!

Attached to the man-cage, another load ofsteel band sections is hoisted to the top ofthe 637-toot high Iron Ore Plant stack.

Adrien Gregoire has scaled over 1,200industrial stacks from Newfoundland toBritish Columbia. The 5-foot 10-inch,220-pound former paratrooper with the"Van Doos" recently worked on thehighest stack of his career - the IronOre Recovery Plant stack, which looms637 feet above the plant.

Adrien and his crew of four men workfor Custodis Canadian Chimney Limited,recently contracted to band and carry outsome preventative maintenance on thetwenty-three-year-old stack.

"It's a good job," says Adrien, as hegulps down a can of beans while sittingout a spell of bad weather in the companyconstruction trailer. "It's clean work, andI'm my own boss on the job. I say don'tclimb, like today, then nobody climbs;can't work in weather like this, toodangerous."

It's better to take a little longer on thejob than to take chances working in badweather, according to Adrien. Theweather and the wind are his only enemieson the job. "We're not allowed to makeany mistakes. One slip and you dontclimb back up again," he says. "I've gotto watch everything, all the time; the menon the scaffold working with me, the menon the ground, the wind, the materialsand the cage, everything at the sametime. It keeps me on my toes."

Required to hoist scaffold parts to thetop of the stack, the first step of the repairjob was the stringing of a 3/a-inch 300-pound steel cable from ground level tothe top of the stack, through a pulleyfastened to the stack's cap, and back toground level.

To do this, one of the crew anchoredthe cable to his safety belt and startedthe long climb to the top of the stackvia a permanent steel ladder secured tothe outside of the stack. By the time hehad climbed to the 200-foot level,he was supporting 100 pounds of cable,and at this point a second man hookedonto the cable at ground level and startedclimbing. After man number two was 200feet aloft, man number three hookedonto the cable at the base of the stackand so, by team work, a 300-pound cablereached the top of the stack, with eachman carrying a third of the load.

with the help of a gas-powered hoist,scaffold hoisting began.

Adrien and his crew worked from amobile circu jar scaffold which consistedof 18 steel brackets, equally spacedaround the stack, individually supportedby a cab'e anchored to the stack's cap.Sturdy planks spanned the gaps betweenbrackets, and jacks located on eachbracket raised or lowered the circularscaffold, which, for the sake of safety,was completely enclosed by wire mesh.

Starting from the top, the stack wasbanded with forty steel bands weighingbetween 150 and 200 pounds each. Thebands got longer thus heavier, as theyreceded down the stack. The sevenbands closest to the top of the stack are316 nickel stainless steel, while the restare mild steel. Each band was boltedwith 16 bolts at eight different connec-tions. The bands were installed on anaverage of one every two hours whenweather and working conditions werefavourable. Cracks in the concrete stackwere caulked with a silicone caulkingcompound which remains flexible in thecenter and hardens on the outside,allowing the concrete to expand andcontract with changes in temperature.

At the 300-foot level of the stack, useof the mobile scaffold was discontinuedand a bosun's chair employed to finishthe caulking job and the joining of thelightning grounds which had split inmany places. "It would take too long tojack down the scaffold just to do thatwork," said Adrien.

"I keep two regular men with me all thetime," he explains, slapping BryanWinters, a seven-year veteran stackworker, on the back. Rejean Gregoire,Adrien's brother, worked on several smallstacks in Montreal before working at theI.O.R.P. with his brother. Gaston Levesquewas hired locally and Vince Chisnell, alsofrom Sudbury, mans the hoist for thecrew.

"I've got four brothers on stacks,"says Adrien proudly. "Bryan and I alsocapped the three sister stacks at theCopper Cliff smelter, back in '72. Bryanworked on the Inco super stack for theKellogg Company before he came withme,"

Where after this? "It could be any-where - Alaska maybe. But I thinkToronto, probably."

WANTEDgood home for

Maria BellMeet Maria. She's 72 years old now, and still going strong. In another 72years, shell probably look just as good; in fact, with proper care, she should go onand on indefinitely.

Cast and christened in 1902, Maria is the 400-pound bronze bell that graced thetower of the old Victoria Mines church (no longer in existence) some five miles fromCrean Hill. Victoria Mines is the name of the settlement that was situated near theMond Nickel Company's smelter . Mond merged with Inco in 1929.

The McShane Bell Foundry in Baltimore, Maryland. was responsible for the birthof Maria; now her care. - and destiny. is in the hands of Don Pierce, generalforeman of safety for mines and mills. Hes been looking after Maria since he foundher 10 years ago, abandoned in an old barn in Whitefish. He was actually doing somework for the fellow who owned the barn; when Maria was discovered, it didn't takeDon tong to strike up a bargain . belts have always appealed to him.

Maria's beauty, however, was completely marred by a solid layer of dirt,accumulated over many years of inactivity and negfect. Don immediately decidedthat his camp on Frenchman Lake would be an ideal rehabilitation centre; after twofull summers of steel wool, acid, polish, and determination, Maria's original charm wassuccessfully restored, and she could be heard ringing for miles around.

She stayed at the camp until this past Christmas, when Don sold the summerplace. But no way would he part with Marial He dismantled her and brought her tohis home in Whitefish. Complete with stands and yoke. Maria is certainly quite aconversation-piece.

By the way. . . that little thing that hangs inside a bell is called a clapper.There's one outside, too, used when the bell is "tolled",

A Copper Cliff smelter pensioner, Sandy Butler, added an interesting bit ofhistory when he saw Maria; in 1910, as a 12-year-old altar boy, he rang the bell atthe christening of Bernadette Hamilton, who was later to become his wife!

Don has now made it known that he is willing 10 relinquish his Maria; he feelsshe should be shown off to best advantage, in a place where people can look ather.. . and remember.

Maria's lived in the Sudbury area sinceher birth 72 years ago. Currently, she'sstaying with Don Pierce, who thinks sheshould remain here in the north. She'savailable, and she's free. Museums-goodhomes-take note, and let's hear fromyou.

Sandy Butler, Maria, and her owner, Don Pierce. Fond memories for Sandy: in 1910, as a l2year-old altar boy, he rang the bell for thechristening of the baby girl who was later to become his wife. Don has been providing a home for Maria for the past 10 years, but admitshe's now interested in donating her for local historical purposes.

Maria's original home, the Roman Catholic church that stood from 1898 to1958 at Victoria Mines townslte, near Crean Hill. The church and settlementare gone, but Maria remains as a gentle reminder of days gone by.

A new concept in safety instruction -an interesting way to spend a Saturday- or how to learn something and enjoyyourself doing it. All this and morecould describe an experimental safetyprogramme underway at Coleman andLittle Stobie mines.

The new method, put simply, is this; awork crew and their foreman are invited tovoluntarily attend safety lectures and

Mass demonstrations give everyone a chance to get into the act. The men arejudged on the practical as well as the written aspects of first aId, and since they areall part of the same work gang, manage to enjoy themselves at the same time.

demonstrations for the St. JohnAmbulance course in first-aid. The courseruns from 8:30 am. to 4:30 p.m. on twoconsecutive Saturdays. The significantthing is that the men, with their foreman,remain intact as a unit, attending thecourse as a team.

The idea is the brain child of FrankKelly, superintendent of Coleman mineand Jeffrey Beland, safety foreman atColeman. It was tried as an experimentand has proved to be so successful thatthe safety department at Little Stobiemine has implemented it as well.

The established method of safetyinstruction, which has been in use for anumber of years, teaches the samecourse, but in a different manner. Themen voluntarily attend night classes, twohours a week for eight weeks. Thegroups are usually large, numbering over100 at times, and are made up of per-sonnel from many different areas of Inco.Because of this, the men don't knoweach other and dont receive as muchindividual attention as they do with thenew method. The spontaneity andcamaraderie that is evident at Colemanand Little Stobie seems to be missing.

A recent survey conducted at Colemanmine indicates that the number of acci-dents has been reduced since the newcourse started. Another significantstatistic is that the men at Coleman havescored 10 to 15 per cent higher on examsthan the traditional group, with no failuresrecorded since the course started inApril of this year.

It also seems that the longer the

course runs the better it gets. This is duein part to the fact that each man fills outa questionnaire upon completion of theprogramme, and notes anything that hefeels will improve the course.

One suggestion was for more slides,illustrating casualties. This involvesapplying make-up to casualties" forthe purpose of simulating real injuries,and then taking a picture for use as in-

structional material. It's not as easy as itsounds; it requires a special course incasualty simulation in order to apply themake-up realistically.

A result of our safety department'srelentless and untiring search for methodsto make the working area a safer placeto be, the new safety training programmeis another feather in an already well-feathered thinking cap.

Perhaps the most difficult part of the St. John Ambulance first-aid course atColeman mine was writing the final exm. The course, held on two consecutiveSaturdays, is designed to give the participants a working knowledge of first-aid.

1914. A world gone mad. The emotions were shock - then fear - finallydespair. Confusion reigned supreme, as men and young men prepared to do battle.

Then, on the morning of November11, 1918, there was cause for celebration,for at eleven o'clock, eastern standard time, news flashed to every corner that anarmistice had been signed - the order given to cease fire along the western front inEurope - and the First World War was over.

It was a time when cities went wUd - there was shouting and rejoicing; streetswere filled from curb to curb with peop'e marching, embracing, crying, and laughing

and the churches were full.

Veterans remembering the battlefields of France and Flanders also rememberthe sudden springtime blooming of the common corn poppy which spread a scarletcarpet over every waste space and every grain field - surely a natural tribute tothose who would never return - and before long, the crimson blossom becamethe emblem of our annual Poppy Day.

Today, disabled war veterans make the poppies for Canada and, through thislight industry, the Royal Canadian Legion while giving help and encouragement tomany men and women who might otherwise be unemployed, also offers comfort andsupport to dependants of such veterans.

Thus, although the poppy is a symbol of remembrance, it is even more a symbolof life today, and of bright hope for the future.

We wear the poppy with pride, to honour our heroic dead, and to emphasizeCanada's devotion to peace and goodwill. Perhaps, in time, we shall see theultimate armistice - worldwide peace ... forever.

Bob Brown

Now

Bob Brown, now 80, enlisted in 1914and was assigned to the 7th Battery,2nd Brigade, Canadian Field Artilleryunder General (at the time, Major)Andy McNaughton. Bob's a memberof the Red Chevrons, the original firstdivision to go overseas.

In 1942, Bob again enlisted, but thistime joined the Royal Canadian Air Forceand, when discharged in 1945, hadattained his corporalship.

Born in Berkshire, England, Bob wasan Inco employee from 1928 til hisretirement from Stobie in 1959. He's alife-time member of the Copper CliffRoyal Canadian Legion, branch 224.

AR PnaudAIf Pinaud is 75 years old, and a

veteran of both World Wars. Born andraised on Canada's east coast, it was nosurprise to his family when, in 1917, AIfenlisted in the RCNVR (Royal CanadianNaval Volunteer Reserve). Dischargedin 1919 as a qualified signalman, hejoined the GWVA (Great War VeteransAssociation) in 1920, and is a lifetimemember of the Copper Cliff Royal Cana-dian Legion, branch 224.

AIf joined Inco in 1936, enlisted in theRCNR during the second World War, wasdischarged in 1945 as chief petty officer,and retired from Inco's mechanicaldepartment in 1964.

It was the call of the wild blue yonderfor Norm Miles; he enlisted in the RoyalCanadian Air Force in 1942 and, withaircraft maintenance, was directly in-volved in duties off the east coast. InNovember of '45, he was dischargedwith the rank of corporal.

Norm's a firm believer in the Legion -a member of Sudbury branch 76 - andfeels it provides an excellent service forveterans. Norm's been with Inco sinc&1938, and is maintenance superintendentat Creighton mine.

At Inco's Port Colborne refinery, the keyto success in producing electrolytic nickelof high purity is an efficient electrolytepurification system. This highly complexseries of chemical reactions removesimpurities from the stream of nickelsolution flowing to the electro-refiningtanks at the rate of about 17,000 cubicfeet per hour, so that only nickel at 99.9per cent purity is plated onto productioncathodes.

In the electrolytic plating tanks, impureanodes are positioned alternately withcathodes contained in wooden frames,over which are stretched canvas dia-phragms creating compartments whichseparate the cathodes from their environ-ment. These cathode boxes are fed withpurified electrolyte at such a rate that the

flow is always through the diaphragms'md away from the cathode, thus im-purities which are disso'ved from themode along with nicke' are preventedfrom being plated out onto the cathodesheet.

The impure anodes, and hence thesolution surrounding the anodes, containcopper, cobalt, iron and other minormpurities which must be removed from

the solution. This impure solution, knownas anolyte, overflows from the p'atingtmnks and is pumped to a centra'purification area,

n the first step, copper is removed ina series of 30-foot deep purification tanksy a cementation process in which

copper is coated onto partic'es of groundnicke' powder. This powder is known as

Sinter-95 and s a product of the fluidbed roasters at Copper Cliff.

After remova' of the copper-nicke'solids by filtration on plate and framefilter presses, the solution passes on toanother series of tanks called oxidizers,where the cobalt and iron are removed.The acidity of the so'ution is adjustedwith alkaline nicke' carbonate, afterwhich, chlorine gas is added to oxidizethe impurities. Under these conditions,the coba't and iron precipitate togetherforming a black sUme which is fflteredoff by vacuum tube fitters.

The ffltrate, after passing throughpoHshing filter presses, is now freed ofimpurities and returned to the p'atingtanks after addition of smaU quantities of

acid and organic additives to enhancethe physica' properties of the eectro-deposit, thus comp'eting the cycle.

What does not appear evident in thisgreatly simplified summary is the carerequired by the operating personne' inmaking these reactions happen when andhow they are supposed to. Carefu'attention must be paid to detai's such astemperature, acidity and potentiaL Toaid in monitoring and controlUng thesevariab'es, extensive use is made ofpneumatic and e'ectronic instrumentationas weU as spot ana'yses of the eectroytestreams. Thus a constant flow of purifiednicke' so'ution is ensured for the p'atingtanks where the sflent magic of eectro-ysis comp'etes the process to form u'tra-pure eectroytic nickeL

How much we take for granted' But asolitary stroll through an autumn day canreally bring us back - to something soordinary, yet so essential, as the "lowly"leaf.

It's just a matter of taking a fewmoments to ponder; that little leaf doesmore than decorate a tree. Much more.Green and growing through the springand summer months of its youth, theleaf, approaching the final days of itsshort life, will turn a burnished gold and,perhaps in a final burst of defiance, hopeto awaken us to a sense of urgency andimmediacy. For are we all not similarto the leaf - so familiar, yet so casuallyignored?

For who hasn't shuffled through thetumbling leaves of fall, yet never beentouched by the amazing crimsons and

golds? Who hasn't picked a leaf from thewindshield of a car, yet never stopped towonder? Who hasn't spent time in thebackyard with rake in hand, thinking onlyof a tedious job to be done? Or collectedleaves for school projects, or beenwitness to a final blazing bonfire,without really seeing?

Just to contemplate for a moment onthe miracle of 'photosynthesis" - sucha harsh word for so gentle a process -then to thankfully bow to the presenceof all plant life - and, of course, the leaf- for without it, the balance of naturewould be greatly upset: after hundredsof millions of years of breathing in life-giving oxygen from the air, we must admitthat we have only plant life to thank forreplacing it - and there are few plantswithout leaves!

And who hasn't admired potted plants,or boasted about them. More often thannot, it's the leaf that creates the aura ofbeauty. . . big or small, soft or spindly,flexible, glossy, intricate, broad, twining,two-tone, three-tone.

Leaves that tell your fortune - leavesthat are the very basis of some of ourmodern-day medicines - leaves that arerolled up and smoked, providing industry,enjoyment and relaxation - leaves thatcan make us scratch and itch .

Leaves for eating . . . luscious water-cress, lettuce, cabbage, kale, evenspinach . . unusual salads created fromunusual leaves: rose, dandelion andevening primrose . . . leaves that give usunique teas, just steep in hot water, addhoney or sugar, for a refreshing beveragemade from birch or plantain, rose orstrawberry leaves.

There are leaves that give us pepper,leaves that have been put to good use asinner soles for shoes, leaves that Indianchildren have used to wrap their dollsin...

Leaves for protecting food, and evenfor providing a roof over our heads .palm fronds that are thatched to giveshelter, woven to make hats, hammocksand fans .

Leaves of local wild plants can beused for making paints or dyes and, insome cases, one single leaf can, withproper care, regenerate an entire plant.

Eat them, drink them, smoke them, behealed and protected by them, but don'ttake them for granted!

Leaves. They're a pretty big part ofour lives - even if, on a cool fall day,we just stop to look at them, and admire.And maybe turn over a new one.

A taste of the sweet life...Whatever it takes to be a beekeeper,

Walter Hughes has it. And how! Born inDublin, Ireland, Walter inherits the traitfrom his family. In 1953, he arrived inCanada, joined Inco, forgot about thebees, is now with plant protection atCreighton mine, and just last year wasstung by the urge to resume the sweetart of apiculture.

He started off by purchasing his bees- by the pound, no less - from Cook'sof Aurora; the two three-pound "pack-ages" each contained one fertile Italianqueen bee and about 15,000 worker and!or drone bees. He bought his two originalcolonies (hives) from Inco pensioner,Dan Thomas, former town clerk ofCopper Cliff and himself an apiarist.

Walter now has five colonies, eachwith an average of 80,000 to 100,000 bees- he produces about 75 pounds ofextracted honey per hive per season, aseason in our area being June to October.

The apiary is located at the RiverviewGolf and Country Club on Penage Road;it's a par 36 nine-hole course ownedand operated by the Smorhay family -Walter, with the mechanical departmentat Creighton mine, wife, Doreen, and son,Greg, at the Iron Ore Recovery Plant.

Besides enjoying his own carefully-nurtured honey, Walter's had his fairshare of stings - as many as ten duringa working session with the bees -causing a hand to swell up to almostdouble its normal size.

Take heed - says Walter, "when itstings, a bee leaves its stinger as well asa sack of venom; scrape off the sack,then remove the barbed stinger . . . don'tswat the bee off, that'll only push thevenom and stinger further in".

Oh, by the way, inflation hits bees too!Those three-pound "packages" of beeslast year cost $1 1, this year, $23, andnext year's price, probably $30. Somaybe think twice before making abeeline for your nearest "order office".

And how 'bout these for a few inter-esting facts. . . the queen bee lays1,500 to 2,000 eggs a day (more than herweight) . . towards fall, the worker bees

Welcomed on October 24th as newmembers of the Port Colborne chapterof Incos Quarter Century Club, 10 Portnickel refinery employees and two re-search station personnel upped themembership of that chapter to a totalof 759.

Ontario Division vice-president, smelt-ing and refining, Gord Machum, madepresentations to the 10 new club mem-bers from the refinery, while corporatevice-president Charlie ONeill did thehonours with the two from the researchstations.

Attended by most of the chaptersmembers, the gala night at the IncoRecreation Hall in the Port kicked offwith a banquet followed by the debutof a newly formed quartet - Reg andFriends ; Port Colborne company pen-sioners Reg Steeves Bob Duke, JackNash and Art Royon.

A magician, Captain Bill Jamesemceed the following rip-roaring pro-gramme of entertainment that includedspecialty dancer Cathie Campbell, thedaring Trampchamps and, topping thebill T.V. and radio songstress Vanda King.

Guest speaker at the clubs 25thannual celebration was corporate vice-president Frank Burnet.

My particular area of responsibilitywith Inco concerns employee relationshe said. How you feel about the com-pany, your working conditions, hours,wages, salaries, pensions and benefits,safety training and the health and welfareof your families, are areas both ofinterest and concern to me.

It wont surprise you, therefore, hecontinued, when I say that 1 believe thekind and quality of people in its employis a key ingredient in the success of anycompany - and Inco is a very success-ful company because we have the bestpeople in the business.

Long before I joined Inco I was toldby people in other companies such asours, that when it comes to hard-rockmining smelting, and refining Inco leadsthe world. When your competitionacknowledges that youre number one,youd better believe it he said.

At the I.O.R.P., Lioyde Frith's suggestionto replace cottrell draft manometers withgauges made him $105 richer.

Earl Pltzner, Garson mine, won $90 forsuggesting slanted sill posts.

There were three $75 awards.: BruceKutchaw and Arnold Anderson split theirsfor revisions to the x-ray analyzer at Clara-belle mill, while Murray JewitI, also ofClarabelle, clicked for designing a cable reelcart. VladImIr Malec, Coleman mine,

picked up his money for proposing an aux-iliary power supply for the Koepe hoist.

At $60 were Harold Boluk and NicolaRooca, both from the copper refinery; Har-old suggested an access ladder andplatform to the number one wire bar castingframe, while Nicola thought of putting acover on the sheet preparation machine.

Paul Hogan, Creighton mine, netted $45for designing a safer method to pull cablewith a Unimog.

From the l.O.R.P., Jean Wolfe and ArtTurner are $40 winners for proposing re-visions to the Farval greasing system.

Five men added an extra $35 to their paythis month. They were Lucien Beaudry,Levack, for suggesting a filter on the waterline near the sample room; Nick Beynen,copper refinery, for a safer sample handlingchain, plus another $30 for suggesting anopening for better vision for the rock carwinch operator; Philip Carrier, Levack mill,for a valve on G.l.W, pump lines; RoyLevesque, also from Levack, for a no-

motion switch on the filter conveyor and BillTodd, for proposing a screen over thehydraulic control system of number threevertical furnace at the copper refinery.

In the $30 category, Frank Taback andTerry Labeile from the copper refinerythought it was a good idea to put kick plateson the floor at the loop machine, while EddyMartin saw the need for steel guides on thesheet preparation machine. From the IronOre Recovery Plant, we have Jack Mikkoiaand Mike Mikkoia with separate awards -Jack for ceramic thermocouple wells andMike for recognizing the need for a stairwaybetween the powerhouse and the coolingtower.

The largest number of awards was in the$25 class, with 14 given out. BruceKutchaw and Arnold Anderson from Clara-belle mill suggested revisions to the x-rayanalyzer, while the team of Rene Legaultand Real Gaudet thought up a warning sys-tem for loading timber trucks. In the $20 bracket, Phiiippe Lussier,copper refinery, picked up twin awards; onefor a warning light on a circulating pump,and one for suggesting that curtains be in-stalled around emergency showers. RobertMikkoia and Orliio Aiberton, l.O.R.P.,thought of putting a welding plug in thechangehouse. Edgar Dugas and Gary Du-pont, also from the I.O.R.P., clicked; Edgarfor a catwalk exit sign, and Gary for elim-inating valve stems protruding in the walk-way. Richard Schroeder, Clarabelle mill,thought of putting a barrier at wet screenchutes and Aifred Wiikie, I.O.R.P., pro-posed a removable front on the washingcontainer, The last $20 winner was AiianWingrave who saw the need for drains atstandard crushers at the Clarabelle mill.

There were seven $15 winners. DougBardeii and Larry Martin, l.O,R.P., sharedan award for suggesting a key to removevalves on empty propane cylinders.Edmond Hastings and Aivin Shiikie, a'so

from the I.O.R.P., did likewise for relocatingvent fan switches. Giibert Prevost netted$15 for proposing a compressed air line tothe control room at Garson mine, and a fur-ther $10 for identifying controls in the sandplant. Ernest Schrader, I.OR.P., suggesteda floor drain for the barren solution, whileDan Sweezey, Clarabelle mill, suggested in-dividual valves for magnetic separatorsprays. At the I.O.R.P., Ronaid Wigmorefigured out a lifting method for welding ma-chines, and Frank Young, Copper CliffNorth mine, developed modifications to fuseboxes on Grangesburg trolleys.

Richard Kerr, Copper Cliff North mine,suggested stock braces for oilskin pants,and Raymond Leciair, Garson mine,thought a sign for better housekeeping inthe changehouse would improve things.They both won $10. The final two $10 win-ners were Eric Pohjoia, North mine and ArtRobinson, Garson mine - Eric for pro-posing a guard over a pump belt pulley, andArt for suggesting an emergency shower inthe electrical shop.

Art LaPensee of the Frood machineshop plowed his way to the winnerscircle last year in the St. CharlesAgriculture Society's 19th annual plowingmatch and following his example thisyear was his son, Danny.

Danny displayed the skills he learnedfrom his dad by winning first place in thematch and defeating more than 30experienced contestants. "We're keepingthe trophies in the family, says Art.

The plowing match was held on theSt. Charles Community Grounds.

Plowingand CHAMPSSoftballFrood 600 level upset Frood Mechanicalin playoff action for the Eldred Dickietrophy. The 600 level team came frombehind in the two-out-of-three gameseries to take an 8-7 win and wind upsoftball action in the Frood-Stobie leaguefor the year.

At the end of regular play, FroodMechanical held a firm grasp on firstplace in the league, followed by LittleStobie, Frood Office Staff and the Frood600 level. Frood Mechanical took twogames away from Frood Office Staffn their semi-final series, while 600 leveldefeated Little Stobie to gain a berth inthe playoff action.

League statisticians for the Frood-Stobie Athletic Association reported agood but rough season, with no com-plaints other than the weather getting aithe too cold, too fast.

Copper Cliffs Nickel Park is undergoingchanges. As part of a continuing projectstarted two years ago by lncos agri-culture department, two acres of the parkare presently being raised, regraded andsodded.

The original soil depth was minimal,since the fill used to cover the area, anabandoned roast yard, was hauled froma location on highway 17 by horse andwagon. Over the years, the soil hassettled causing poor surface drainage, asituation which will be overcome byraising the level.

As much as two feet of new soil isbeing added to improve the surface gradeand provide an adequate depth for goodtree growth.

Five acres of the park have beenimproved since the project commenced.This two-acre plot of land is the site,where, this summer, the company held itsMusic in the Park" programme. It'll be

in great shape for next summer'sactivities.

ment, Tony Fritz, superintendent of theF..R. building at Copper Cliff, has themost improved lawn in Lively. He waspresented with the Lorne Gagnonmemorial trophy for his efforts.

The award was inaugurated in 1967 byBill Tresize in memory of his friend LorneGagnon. Bill worked summers with Lorneon Inco's grounds maintenance crew andthey became close friends.

In the spring of 1967, Lorne died in anautomobile accident and Bill wanted to dosomething to honor his friend. Since thetown of Lively was built on what was onceLorne Gagnon's farm, Bill could thinkof no better way to pay tribute to Lornethan by having an award for a Livelyactivity.

Tom Vickers, a former Inco employee,and Inco annual garden competitionjudge for more than 25 years, presentedthe trophy to Tony.

A group of mtning engtneerng studentsfrom Minnesota State Uffiversity in St. Paulvisited Inco's Shebandowan complex,near Thunder Bay, Ontario. The students,all in their fourth year of studies, wereon a mineral engineering field study trip.

They visited various mines in Ontario,lllinofs, and Missouri as part of theirfact-finding tour. When they returnto the university, the group will submitwritten reports and conduct seminarson the different methods of miningtechnology which they observed.

The Walker Mineralogical Club visitedthe Copper Cliff North mine recently. Theclub, which is affiliated with the RoyalOntario Museum, was founded n 1938by university professor Walker.

Approximately 30 people were on handfor the descent to the 1500 level of themine. They collected ore samples, andnow will be able to add to displays theyhave back at their Toronto headquarters.

Although the club was originally estab-!ished as a professional group, includingonly professional mining and mineralogypeople, it's now predominantly amateurin nature.

Its not your everyday type of footballplayer who is elected by his teammatesas the most valuable player at the end ofa season.

So, it has to be one super footballplayer, or one super fellow, who isnamed the most valuable player - SIXyears in a row.

That describes Gord Evans Jr., a superoffensive halfback for the SudburySpartans and a first class machinist atFrood mine.

Spartan coach, Sid Forster, will testifyto that and more. "I've coached for 20years in three sports and never coachedanyone better than Gord, says Sid,who claims hes never even heard ofanother sportsman receiving the mostvaluable player award for that lengthof time.

Yup! Theres no doubt about it. Gordis as handy with a pigskin as he is witha lathe. And one of the nicest thingsabout him is hes the last person to tellyou about it. Hes modest to an extreme.

Fortunately, Sid is delighted to talkabout Gord.

The coach says Gord is so adaptablethat he performs well in any position onthe team. Gord hesitates when hesasked what position he plays. Well, Iplay offensive right now, but I've played alot of defense too, he says. Mostlythough, in the 10 years that I've playedfor the Spartans, I guess I've run theball.

Indeed he has.Gord is now the all-time career off en-

sive leader, in terms of yards gained, inthe Northern Football Conference. Mindyou, Gord wouldn't volunteer thatinformation.

Nor would he ever think to mentionthat he established a new league recordthis year in the number of times a singleplayer carried the ball. The old recordwas 138; Gord carried the ball 155 timesin nine of 10 games in the '74 season.

Weighing in at 185 pounds and stand-ing close to six feet tall, Gord doesntlook big enough to have earned suchawesome football credentials. He laughsoff his comparatively small size withthe remark: "I may not be big, but I'mwiry - and fast.

Seems Gord has been a fast moverfor a long time. He claims he was bornin Winnipeg while his mom was passingthrough. Actually, his dad, Gord Sr., astationary engineer at Frood mine, and

Gord Evans.his mom, Dorothy, did live there for awhile, moving to Sudbury shortly afterGord arrived.

So, Gord is a Sudbury boy and it wasat Nickel District High School that hebegan playing football.

After four years of the contact sport,Gord had the football bug, so he joinedthe Spartans. By this time it was 1964and Gord had started his apprenticeshipin the Frood mine machine shop.

During his non-working hours, Gordthrew himself into football - to him, itwas, and still is, a total commitment. SaysSid: Gord is a guy whos motivated allthe time. He does everything head first.He brings honesty to all he does. Hes

tough and dedicated.Gord must be dedicated. He attends

two-hour practices four or five nightsweekly from June to October and thentheres a home or out-of-town game everyweekend.

According to Sid, Gord even playswhen hes hurt and has a dependabilityfactor that is admirable.

In the decade that Gord has playedfor the Spartans. theyve topped theNorthern Football Conference five times.That's not a bad average and apparentlyGord has had a good deal to do withkeeping the Spartans 'hanging in there",not only statistics-wise, but operation-wise as well.

Sudbury Spartans' MVPSays Sid: Do you know what Gord

did a couple of weeks ago? He did theteams laundry! No one had to ask him;he just knew it had to be done, so hecame In and did it one afternoon beforegoing on afternoon shift at the mine.

Just as Gords commitment to footballis great, his commitment to Inco extendsbeyond the machine shop and an eight-hour workday.

He joined the mine rescue detail in1969 and is a member of the Frood-Stobie mine rescue team which won theiistrct competition championship thisyear and finished second in the Ontariocompetition.

In fact, Gord had to miss one of his

Spartan games this year in Torontobecause he was involved in mine rescuework. Gord was in touch with theteam right up to the last minute on thechance that he might be able to make thegame, says Sid. He was even willingto fly down at his own expense, if hecould finish soon enough.

Truth be known, Gord is as excitedabout being on the mine rescue team ashe is about football. And, hes the typeof guy who doesnt begrudge a momentof his work. He especially considers him-self fortunate to have gained experienceat Totten mine, Creighton number nineshaft and in Shebadowan since he startedworking for Inco.

Gords athletic prowess goes evenfurther than football. A display cabinetin his Struthers Street home Fn Sudburyholds plaques and trophies for broom-ball, curling, hockey and baseball. Hewas a member of the Frood-StobieMechanical softball team which led theleague in 1973.

You wouldnt think Gord would haveany spare time left, but he found enoughto court and marry a gal named Patriciafour years ago.

Gord certainly is an all-round guy.Maybe he could be even more all-

round. Coach Sid says hell vote for Gordif he ever runs for Prime Minister.

A thought-provoking and slightly sur-prising comment.

"The pleasure of being with the peoplethat the action attracts by far outweighsmy interest for the game." - words ofSid Forster, coach of the SudburySpartans Football Club, and also thismonth's "triangle" logo writer.

Sid's comment is not surprising tosomeone who's met and talked with oneof the people he's referring to - namely,Gord Evans, the Sudbury Spartans' super-star featured in this month's "triangle".

A native of Ottawa, Sid came toSudbury in the late '40's, worked for Incoat Garson in the mid '50's, and carriedthe ball with the newly-formed SudburyHardrocks from '53 to '55.

Sid left the Sudbury area in '55, andreturned in '67 to coach the team he'dleft behind. That year the Hardrocksbecame the Spartans - and they haven'tlooked back since.

In the following eight seasons of North-ern Football Conference action, the teamfinished in first place five times anddropped no lower than second.

True to style, Sid recently acceptedanother challenge. He's now the managerof the City of Sudbury Convention andVisitors Bureau.

Coach Sid, or manager Sid - takeyour choice - still has Inco representa-tion. His wife, Anne, is a key punchoperator with computer systems atCopper Cliff.
