Sunday, November 19, 2017 Ezekiel 37:1-6

We offer these questions for reflection during the service or during your week. Ponder them yourself, or discuss them with friends. Many small groups use them for discussion; if you would like to participate in a group, visit www.laumc.org/grouplife.

Ezekiel was the first prophet to preach to the Jewish people after they no longer had the Temple or the promised land to show God’s presence. All of his prophecies end with one message: “so that you will know that I am God.”

1. How was this comforting to the people who were in exile?

2. What would this message have said to them about how to live?

Read the story of Ezekiel’s vision of a valley of dry bones. The biblical description is unusually graphic—intentionally helping us to imagine the sight and sound of dried-out bones gathering themselves up and reassembling themselves into life. Readers have imagined this story as a premonition of Jesus’

resurrection, but scholars believe it’s something different, a vision of a whole people—a community—restored to life and hope.

3. Have you ever seen that happen?

4. Have you ever watched an organization or community or family you’ve been part of find new energy and new life?

5. Have you ever felt so discouraged that you felt your bones were dry?

6. What brought you back to life?

7. What is the new story of hope that God’s people might carry into the world today?
