Page 12, The Estill County Tribune, January 28, 2015 Bob Watkins Ernie Banks died the other day and it made me think of another Mr. Cub. Leon Singleton. Lives in McCreary County these days, Leon. He and the rest of us who took to dusty baseball fields on the hot July days of our youth, celebrate that Mr. Cub came our way. In my case, both of ‘em. Fare-thee-well, Mister Cub. Ernie Banks’s body was 83. But between his ears he was 15, maybe. Ever smiling, ever grateful for life. Along with smiling Leon Singleton and oth- ers who owned his base- ball card, he gave us sunny words as timeless as the best Yogi Berra-ism. Let’s play two. And, we did play two. Mr. Cub was responsible for other wisdoms that sep- arate those who embrace life sweetly no matter cir- cumstance, from those who pursue it through brangles and briars of dollars. In his book, Ernie Banks: Mr. Cub and the Summer of ‘69, author Phil Rogers wrote of No. 14 whose smile seemed for- ever... √ “I tried to sign every kid’s autograph. Because in my mind, I thought that one day I might have to ask this kid for a job. √ “My dad used to take me to the cotton fields, tell me to pick cotton. It taught me how to use my hands. I would grab. When I started to play baseball I just had the natural quick hands. That was my extra advan- tage, my slight edge over anybody else. I had quick hands. I could wait to the last minute and hit the ball. Nobody could understand it. But I had those quick hands, which I developed by picking cotton. √ “Ernie Banks grew up in Dallas, Rogers wrote, and told me once he was having so much fun riding buses with the Kansas City Monarchs that he wasn’t happy when owner Tom Baird sold him and pitcher Bill Dickey to the Cubs for $20,000 in September, 1953.” √ “My life is9 like a mir - acle.” Ernie Banks. Baseball fans are grateful he came our way. And, Leon Singleton’s way too. UK GLORY ROAD For basketball fans in Kentucky, a calendar’s turn to February is the bit- tersweet. The sweet is ob- vious: Brag rights, record without blemish, the team’s place at pinnacle of Hoops World. Traditionalists ana- lyze the games painstak- ingly – assists, fast-break points, and new favorite, blocked shots. February, here comes the bitter. Attachment to favorite players counting down to June. A growing, if unspoken dread for the recently institutionalized part of Kentucky basket- ball, get-me-to-the-NBA. In two months, too many favorites will be gone too soon. Among them perhaps, SEC freshman player of the week for last three in a row, Devin Booker. The new generation of Wildcat fans are (John Calipari) re-programmed to “next!” The rest of us will cher- ish those who savored time on the Glory Road instead of perilous pursuit after gold at the end of it. BURROW HONOR OVERDUE Bob Burrow, two-time All-American at Kentucky (1955 and 1956) will be honored at this year’s SEC Tournament at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville March 11-15 as a Conference Bas- ketball Legend. Sixty years on, this hon- or for Burrow and family is shamefully overdue. Uni- versity of Kentucky ath- letic officials in rapture of goings-on in Calipari era, ought pay better attention to the program’s rich past. WESTERN ROLLS Western Kentucky’s 7-0 start in C-USA is the best conference start since 1969- 70 when the Jim McDan- iels-led Hilltoppers were on way to 14-0 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Severe tests for the Tops this week with league road games at Louisiana Tech Thursday and Southern Miss Saturday. What-to-Watch Dept. Ben Lawson at Western Kentucky. Having seen the maturation of Nazr Mo- hammed at Kentucky and Felton Spencer at Louis- ville from walk-and-chew- gum-at-same-time to NBA- worthy, Lawson’s advances are remarkable. The gangly Brit is a study in team guy learn-grow-ad- vance. In twin wins last week Lawson’s carefully man- aged minutes produced 11 points, 10 rebounds and nine blocked shots. Native of Hitchin, south of Cambridge, England, Lawson has much to do – time at the dinner table and in weight room. But his minutes, timing and circumstance coach Ray Harper and staff choose to use their 7-0 sophomore, makes an intriguing chapter in a special story. LOUISVILLE Rick Pitino did last week one of the things he has a reputation for doing so art- fully, spin. His team’s 15-3 re- cord (at the time) is an ac- complishment Da Coach rates somewhere between Houdini and a space walk. In fact, along with grow- ing a beard it was smoke to take away from Montrezl Harrell’s revoked team cap- taincy and home losses to Kentucky and Duke sand- wiched around a stinging give-away at North Caro- lina. The Cardinals are still a team nobody wants to play and are back in groove in time for North Carolina then road games at Miami and No. 2 Virginia. KRZYZEWSKI 1,000 coaching wins. Mike Krzyzewski, with acknowledgement to play- ers past and mentor Bob Knight, demonstrated again why he is among the elite ever in college hoops. ESPN allotted good face time for the coach’s wife as well. Hoops Mount Rush- more: Adolph Rupp, John Wooden, Bob Knight and Coach K. PARTING SHOT ESPN basketball analyst Dan Dakich drew the ire of Iowa coach Fran McCaf- frey last week after Dakich blistered Iowa center Adam Woodbury for poking fin- gers into the eyes of two Wisconsin players. Seeing a replay, Wood- bury should be disciplined, and McCaffrey should use it as a teaching moment in- stead of berating a teevee guy. And so it goes. You can reach me at bob. [email protected] Bob Watkins’ Sports In Kentucky From Leon and rest of us, fare-thee-well Mr. Cub; UK continues on the Glory Road Kruzers Newz Kruzers Newz Twin City Kruzers’ next monthly meeting on Mon- day, February 2nd at 7:00 p.m. in Irvine City Hall. Anyone interested in joining Twin City Cruizers needs to come to the meetings. We were buy ast our January meeting, planning car shows, car cruises and cruise-ins. We are look- ing forward to 2015. All events are free and open to anyone. There will be music, raffles, corn hole and door prizes. Bring your family and enjoy the beautiful vehicles in downtown Irvine. Dates will be announced in March. Anyone interested in joining, needs to come to our meeting or call president Kenneth Tipton at 723-7554 or vice-president Darrell Hall at 723-3612. I want to preface this with the reason I get to wander the woods and water freely is be- cause of the men and women behind the guns. The preface is for anyone who wants to send a nasty email letting me know this column is not about the woods and water. If anyone wants to send an email letting me know I have an anger issue well I do when anyone talks bad about those protecting my Freedom! So the Hollywood folks and leftists are up in arms over American Sniper. A movie about a true hero who in no way was coward. Michael Moore, a pudgy little fellow who makes worthless mov- ies, called snipers cowards. I would love to see Moore’s bravery and go bare knuckles with a close friend of mine who is a retired Army Ranger! It really upset me when I heard all the things that the likes of Moore, Seth Rogan, Alec Baldwin and others said Wanderings from the Woods & Water by Jay Bicknell [email protected] Hollywood Critics about snipers. I personally know two retired snipers. They both were wounded in combat. There is zero cow- ard in those two guys. They both had been wounded multiple times and when they healed up, back to the front lines they went to fight Islamic terrorists. Yes Islam- ic Muslim terrorists. That’s something President Obama will never say. One of my sniper bud- dies lost a son in Iraq. Then he was shot by an Islamic Muslim terrorist while try- ing to get position on Islamic Muslim terrorists that were shooting up American sol- diers. The shot flipped him off of a building breaking his back and hand. He got up and stayed in the fight! Cow- ard . . . I think not! My other sniper buddy was in a Hum-V when a guy walking in front of him got shot by an Islamic Muslim terrorist. He jumped out to help and RPG grounded out at his feet blowing up break- ing both of his ankles. Then an Islamic Muslim terror- ist shot him in the back. He jumped up, ankles broke, and tried to help the soldier who had been shot and killed by an Islamic Muslim terror- ist. Coward, I think not. Every soldier is a hero to my family and I. It takes a Hero to serve in the military these days due to this admin- istration’s rules of engage- ment. A soldier serving to- day has to just about get shot before they can return fire, or be court marshalled. I am in favor of turning the military loose and let them do their job effectively taking out Is- lamic Muslim terrorists. I have found a flaw in the Hollywood liberal leftist ar- gument. They will call our soldiers murderers and cow- ards. They called Vietnam vets, baby killers. Then these same people will applaud the killing of the unborn via abortion. At the end of the day it’s the men and women behind the guns who give the Hol- lywood folks the right to say what they do. They also give me the right to write and say what’s on my mind. I am going to exercise my right not to watch any movies the Hollywood liberal leftists make. I hope you will not as well. I have gone on a rant which I will not apologize for. I will always defend those sacrific- ing to defend my Freedoms. My Freedom to serve Je- sus! My Freedom to hunt! My Freedom to write! All my Freedoms, only found in America and protected by the American Soldier! Thank God for our Military! My prayers go out to all of the United States soldiers. A special prayer goes out to all the American Snipers! Until next week, get out and enjoy God’s creation! Jimmie L.
