After National Service he returned to Gary's, later working at both South Bank and Haverton Hill shipyards for a total of 30 years.Pat worked at both Sedge-

fi eld General Hospital and Hartlepool General Hospital as a staff nurse. After they married they lived in Hartlepool for 12 years then moved to Ferry-hill living in Bertha Street and Widdecombe Walk and then onto their current address in Linden Road, where they have resided for the last 12 years. The lovely couple have a daughter Susan, who lives in Australia with her husband and two children. They also have 3 grand-sons, Christopher, Oliver and Callum who live in Blackpool. In their retirement Bob and Pat love their holidays, es-pecially cruises. They also like a trip to the races and to the casinos in Newcas-tle and Blackpool. More importantly, they love visiting their daughter in Australia, who recently went on a cruise with the couple to celebrate their landmark anniversary.Bob and Pat celebrated their tremendous event with a special open house party at their home, attended by over 50 family and friends.Bob said he didn't want any fuss, but he also said his daughter must have organised the whole thing before she went back to Australia.

“Come along for a fun fi lled and action packed family day out,” encouraged a spokesperson.Entry is free and residents are asked to meet at the Town Square to follow the parade to the main event. For further details contact the Town Council on 01388 721788.
Chilton gala this weekend
Durham County Council has recently received a planning application for permission to build 150 houses and bungalows on the edge of Chilton. Ben Bailey Homes hopes to develop land cur-rently used for grazing which runs along the east A167 and south of Millwood Crescent and would have access from Durham Road.Council guidelines recom-mend that 20 per cent of new developments should include a minimum of 20% affordable housing, however
current plans only allow for 16 properties of this nature, falling below the recom-mended amount.Developers claim that, although it is committed to delivering an element of affordable housing, a fi fth of the site would render it economically unviable.A consultation period is cur-rently underway, which will end on September 2nd.Details on the planning ap-plication are available to view at www.durham.gov.uk.
Application falls short of guidelines

Kathleen and Derek Great-head, a well known couple in Chilton celebrated their Golden Wedding on 13th August. They have known each other since they were children. Kathleen’s family came to Chilton from Ushaw Moor just before the Second World War started.Derek came to Chilton with his brother and two sisters as evacuees from Newcas-
tle.Derek and his brothers lived with one family and his sisters lived next door. Eventually his brothers and sisters returned home to Newcastle. Derek stayed in Chilton and is possibly the only evacuee left in the area. After many years the couple met again when Kathleen returned from teacher training college and Derek returned from
his National Service in Germany. They eventually married at the Sacred Heart Church in Chilton. They have 4 children and 6 grandchil-dren.Derek was a well known coal merchant for many years until his retirement. Kathleen taught for 40 years until she also retired. They celebrated their an-niversary with lunch for family and friends.

Chilton Library has two new adult displays avail-able.The fi rst is entitled ‘New Voices’ and includes the book Still Alive by Lisa Genova, which tells the story of Alice Howland, a successful Harvard pro-fessor whose life takes a downward spiral when she is diagnosed with Alzhei-mer’s disease at the age of 50. It also explores the
effects the diagnosis has on her family and the dif-ferent ways they cope with the hereditary threat that is hanging over them. The second adult non-fi ction display is ‘Wildlife’, which will be of interest to both gardeners and wildlife enthusiasts. The display includes books on the subject of British wildlife and the relationships with our gardens.

all the family. Many local charities had stalls for the two days and raised hundreds of pounds for their local groups. Many other exhibitors were also present for the two days. The weekend also saw the last two days of the Fer-ryhill Art and Photography exhibition which proved to be yet another great success with over 100 people taking part in the vote for the best exhibits.
Town Council Leader Pat McCourt said, “It was an exceptional two days of entertainment for local people, the Town Council staff all did an excellent job and my thanks goes to them all.” Plans are already afoot to organise next year’s event which will hopefully be just as big a success. Anyone wishing to make any sug-gestions is encouraged to do so via the Town Hall.

On 10th July Ryan Car-penter went to Ferryhill Workingmen’s Club and asked his mother for the keys to her car, as he needed to retrieve a CD. However, the 21 year-old then drove to Bishop Auckland, without her consent, before returning the vehicle about an hour
Pre-sentence report requestedlater. To make matters worse, Carpenter had no licence, no insurance and was well over the legally prescribed limit of alcohol. At the time, Carpenter was drinking heavily, after a breakdown in his relation-ship with his partner, which was causing him access
problems to his four year old child. Since then he has cut down dramatically on his drinking. Magistrates at Newton Aycliffe stood matters down in order for the Pro-bation Service to prepare a pre-sentence report, with steering towards a high level community penalty.

The man-of-the-match award went to Ross
Mitchell. Their second game was away at last year’s League Champions Tindale Crescent W.M.C. where they fought out a well-earned draw against an excellent Tindale side. Goalkeeper Kris Carr was the deserved man-of-the-match.Ferryhill Celtic play at the King George Playing Field and kick off at 10.30am on Sunday mornings.

It was another good weekend for the Ferryhill Wheelers Mountain High Race Team, with the squad enjoying success in both time trials and road races. On Saturday afternoon the Ferryhill Wheelers hosted the annual 25 mile time trial. National women's bronze medallist at the distance, Mathilde Matthijsse once again showed most of the male riders the way with a fantastic fourth place
overall in a time of 56 minutes and 45 seconds. Needless to say she was fi rst lady, but she also led the Mountain High squad to the team award. Howard Heighton (58.17) and Michael Warner (1:01:05) took the prize ahead of Team Swift. Winner of the event was Andy Jackson of Team Swift in a time of 55:17.Later in the afternoon in the North East Criterium League at Hetton Park, there were three Ferryhill riders in the fi rst ten. Ollie Pearce led the team home in sixth, closely followed by Carl Mustill in 8th and Gert Gammelin in 9th, only a tyre width behind Mustill. All three scored points
and Pearce is now only 10 away from his Category 2 licence. On Sunday it was the turn of Paul Stubbs to take the honours. Riding in the TLI National Road Race Cham-pionship on a course near Boroughbridge, Stubbs was active in an early break of 6 riders. The group worked well together and built up a solid lead that the main bunch were not able to close. In the fi nal sprint Stubbs came away with the win in his category and is now the proud owner of the national champions jersey. Stubbs has had a consistent season and this victory is just reward for his strong riding. Ferryhill Mountain High rider Howard Heighton capped off an excellent weekend for the team, riding well to fi nish at the front of the main bunch.
