With these and possibly other browsers, they must instead select “print” -- not “save” -- and choose “Adobe PDF” as the printer. Secretaries are encouraged to open all completed fillable forms before sending to ensure the data entered is present on the form.

Many ways for bowlers to support our veterans

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE • WILLIE GRAVES JR.

During the month of November, many organizations throughout the U.S. will share stories and show their appreciation and support for those proud men and women who have served and are serving our country in the armed services—our veterans.

NCAUSBCA is a very proud spon-sor of providing funds to veterans who have given so much for our country. Each year, your associa-tion sponsors a Mixed Tournament in Support of BVL—the Bowlers to Veterans Link. This tournament provides funds to programs for our

wounded and disabled veterans but also allows you, the bowler, to win prize money. The funds from the BVL Tournament also are used to provide recreational equipment and arts and crafts materials for those who have served and fought for those freedoms that we have come to enjoy on a daily basis.

This year’s tournament will be held at Bowl America Shirley in Al-exandria, Va., on December 10 and 11. We ask all of our members to come out and support this special and worthwhile event. If you are unable to participate, your indi-vidual and/or group donations are always appreciated and welcomed. Donations may be given to your lane representatives or taken di-rectly to the association office.

As a reminder, your league presi-dent should have arranged for pro-posed prize list(s) to be reviewed and on voted on by league mem-

bers by now. If this has not taken place, I would strongly suggest that prize lists be offered to the bowling league members and voted on as soon as possible. Your league pres-ident also is responsible for form-ing an audit committee to review the league’s financial records. At least three audits should be com-pleted prior to the end of bowling season.

As a special note, I would like to remind our members that the as-sociation’s Annual Membership Meeting will be held on Sunday, February 26, 2017 at a site to be

named. This event is an opportuni-ty for members to elect individuals to the association’s board of direc-tors and also for delegates to both the state meeting and USBC Con-vention. Members also can vote on proposed USBC rule changes and any policy changes being recom-mended by your association as well as ask questions of the NCAUSBCA board. Please place this important date on your calendar.

As always, feel free to contact me with any questions or com-ments you may have at [email protected] or you may call the office at 301/499-1693.

On behalf of the board of di-rectors and the association staff, I would like to wish everyone a blessed Thanksgiving and a happy and joyful Christmas and New Year season. I also certainly hope you keep striking.

NCAUSBCA is a very proud sponsor of providing funds to veterans who have given

so much for our country.

We can’t be sure if this winter is going to be as nice as last winter, so be sure your league has postpone-ment/makeup procedures in place. It’s not worth risking your health if travel is going to be dicey due to wet, icy roads.

ASK BOB • BOB KORTH

Cold weather calls for special bowling ball care

Q. I store some of my bowling balls in my garage. Lately, I went to get one, and it has a crack all the way around the ball. What do you think is going on?

A. This is my annual question— every year at this time this comes up. Bowling balls do not like big changes in temperature, and this time of the year, we see pretty big temperature changes all over the country. We are going into winter, and cold weather is no better for our equipment than too much heat.

Best thing to do now is keep them indoors in a more controlled

heat environment. I know it’s a pain, but if you would not like to be stuck outside in the weather, nei-ther does your bowling equipment. And just think how much happier you will be when you put on your bowling shoes next outing—your feet won’t be frostbitten.

Q. I have been seeing a change in our great game that bothers me: I bowl with three others in a four-man league. I have been bowling for many years. This is a decent scratch league, and my team-mates are driving me crazy. They are always on their phone on the internet. Sometimes I have to go run them down to take their turn. This is a new distraction that is unprecedented as far as I can re-member. Is there a way that you might know of to get these young ‘uns to be more focused?

A. This is a new problem created by the technology of our times. I have run into the same problem at times.

I just mention to them that there are others in our league that are here to bowl and not play on the net. Let them know they are caus-ing slow play by not being ready when it is their turn. Also point out how much better their own game might become if they con-centrated on their game instead of the worldwide net. Remind them the net will still be there after our 2½ hours of bowling, and they can catch up then. This has become a bigger problem over the past three or four years with the wide use of social media.

Many people I bowl with have expressed versions of your ques-tion to me, but I have not seen any-thing written about it. So thank you for your question. This needs to be brought up more in league meetings to keep it from becoming a bigger problem.

Representatives from the Bowl-ers to Veterans Link fanned out across the Washington, D.C. area this Veterans Day to participate in a variety of events to celebrate and honor our nation’s military veter-ans—from a breakfast at the White House, to a wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknowns, to a meet-ing with Veterans Administration Secretary Robert McDonald—the day was filled with programs and activities designed to raise the public consciousness of the service and sacrifice of America’s veterans.

November 11 began early for United States Bowling Congress Executive Director Chad Murphy and Chairman of the Board of Qu-bicaAMF Pat Ciniello. “We were proud to represent BVL and our great sport as guests at the White House breakfast honoring our na-tion’s veterans,” noted Ciniello.

Lisa Ciniello and Anita LaSpina represented BVL as part of the Presidential Color Guard, com-

BVL joins in National Veterans Day activitiesprised of members of the nation’s Veterans Service Organizations, at Arlington National Cemetery.

BVL Board President John La-Spina remarked, “Although every day is Veterans Day for us at BVL, this was a wonderful occasion to join together collectively as a na-tion to reflect and remember what our veterans have done for us. President Obama’s remarks reso-nated with our BVL group when he stated in his speech, ‘We can ac-knowledge that we can never truly repay our veterans for what they have done for us, but we can try…. We must honor their good work with our own.’”

BVL is a member of the National Veterans Day Organizing Commit-tee and, as such, earns the privi-lege and the opportunity to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Un-knowns. Murphy, along with BVL Board Members LaSpina (BOD President), Libbi Fletcher, and Karl

Kielich accompanied the wreath to the Tomb.

The day concluded with a re-ception at the Women In Mili-tary Service for America Memo-rial where BVL representatives met with VA Secretary McDon-ald. There, the Secretary was pre-sented with a facsimile check of more than $925,000, representing the amount of money the sport of bowling raised during the 2015-16 season to support recreational and therapeutic programs and ser-vices designed to boost the spirits of hospitalized veterans and help speed their recuperation.

“The Secretary’s interest in meet-ing with our BVL constituency clearly confirms his appreciation for our efforts. He never hesitates to illustrate his gratitude for our commitment to America’s veter-ans,” says LaSpina. “I explained to him that we are in this to win it; we have just begun to make our ‘16-‘17 year the best yet.”

VA Secretary Robert McDonald (fourth from right) accepts a $925,356.76 fac-simile check from BVL representatives during Veterans Day ceremonies held in the District and at Arlington National Cemetery.
