From the Housemasters StudyI could state the myriad achievements and activities of the great

boys of School House, but that would be a little trite. What I have

been truly pleased to witness and experience this term is the

harmony and warmth that has pervaded the house. If I could

work out how this is achieved I would be a millionaire but through

some form of alchemy the many parts of our small community

have created a successful whole. From the brilliant new boys to a

second house dog, we have had a great term. Enjoy a splendid

    Christmas, you all deserve it.

    MICHAELMAS TERM DECEMBER 2014

CompetitionsBeing a competitive bunch, the boys of

    School House have thrown themselves

headlong at every challenge that has been

put in their way this term. Never

forgetting, however, that it is the spirit of

the thing that matters most. At least, thats

what we tell ourselves when we dont win!

House SingingFresh into the new term in September, the

    House song competition returned for

another cracking year. After a shaky start, with attendance initially low, the tension

built as the day of the performance closed

in. Night after night, day after day, KC and

the Sunshine Band's Give It Up began to

    come together. We faced fierce

    competition from Heads House and

Abraham (to us no other houses really

matter). Led by Alfie Laurence, losing his

temper from time to time, the song began

to gel just in time for the competition at the

Dome with the boys pumped as always.

We may not have got 1st place, 9th in fact

but we were undoubtedly the best dressed

house. Where you see some houses

wearing school uniform with their tie

slightly twisted, our boys went all out,

ranging from pink tutus and hot pants to a

full green morph suit worn by our very

own Max Young. Congratulations to all the

boys for the efforts they put in and a

    deserved win over Abraham house.

    Alfie Lawrence

ChessWhat a year it has been so far for School House and its

chess. As captain, I was faced with the task of choosing

the team which I believed would lead us to victory in

the inter-house tournament. So far, the determination of

all our players has been exceptional, with individuals

such as Oliver Viner winning 2 out of his 3 matches, and

figures such as Alfie Lawrence and Fraser Embrey

helping out when needed. Although we are still yet towin a block fixture, I sense that it is only a matter of

time before our hard work in training pays off. The

juniors (captained by Max Young) had a minor setback

in the first week of matches due to organisational

issues, but really turned their game around later,

drawing with the rather impressive Upper 3rd team.

For the seniors on the other hand, it has been plain

sailing throughout, only losing 3 individual matches so

far, making School House a force to be reckoned with.

Hopefully, the conviction of all our School House chess

players will continue after the Christmas break, with

many more important matches coming our way.

Reflections of a School House New BoyMax Young, 4th form

coping with the exhausting task of caring for

the children, she somehow manages to give

sound advice to us and make sure our roomsarent complete pig-sties all of the time.

The tutors of School House guide each year

group through the pains and benefits of the

academic year. We have five tutors. Loosmore

the Bold, Smethurst the Strong, Nicholson the

Fierce, Savage the savage, Jenks the

foolhardy, and Baragwanath the wise. Mr

Loosmore, our 4th form tutor, has made sure

that we are secure and settled in the school,

providing our aspiring rugby players withsomething to aim for.

And last but not least, the wonderful house

dogs, Salty and Monsieur have made sure that

even when were facing the hardships and

challenges of school life, theyll still climb on

the sofa next to us, and give us a smile, while

also covering us in hair and slobber.

And so, to sum up my first impressions of

School House, its pretty damn great.

As I first crossed the threshold of School

House with my parents, I felt a looming sense

of dread, not wanting the holidays to come toan end; the prospect of going to a new school

was exciting yet also daunting. However, I

believe that School House has performed

excellently in settling in all the new 4th form

and making us feel at home. I am surprised

that I settled in so quickly, even though I had

    never boarded before.

Several factors have contributed massively to

the homely nature of School House, the first

being our housemaster, Mr Jamieson, who isskilled in the art of keeping us rowdy kids

from getting up to too much trouble, and

organising the simply spiffing house outings.

Mr Jamieson is aided by his deputy, Mr

Savage, whose unusual stories of his past

    amaze and awe.

School House would not be a house, however,

without our matron, Mrs Jamieson, and the two

adorable children, Grace and Luke. While

    House Drama (the good kind)

My Boy JackThe drama performed by School House boys this

term has been awe-inspiring. We begin this tale with

a performance by none other than one of our

esteemed actors: Noah Makower (U6th), who played

his rle of Major Sparks in the boarders play My Boy

Jack (directed by Mr. David Crichton). The cast also

included Fraser Embrey (U6th) who played McHugh

with an incredible Irish accent. It was a powerful

performance by all the boarders involved and

brought home the realities of war before we

celebrated the centenary anniversary of the end of

    the Great War.

Memoirs of a Mad ManContinuing this dramatic tale we find

ourselves at the most highly regarded

dramatic event of the year: the school play,

Memoirs of a Madman based on Gogols

book, Diary of a Madman. This year two

school house boys had rles: Fraser Embrey

and Alfie Laurence (U6th). The play was

received very well by all who came to watch it

    with almost unanimously positive reviews.

Fraser said that he enjoyed the

atmosphere of the play greatly and it

was clear that the audience were

enjoying it as much as we were, we all

put in a lot of effort. It was a resounding

success and this is in part due to theSchool House spirit.

LAMDAThere are a small number of boys in our fourth

form who are doing LAMDA: Oscar Davison,

Louis Tarvin (Grade 5) and Alex Hicks (Grade

5). They look hopeful to continue a strong

tradition of dramatic arts within the house.

Fraser Embrey is doing his Gold this year, the

final grade in his final year at the College.

House Warm UpEarlier this term Mr. Savage Deputy

Housemaster and resident thespian took the

entire house outside for a vocal warm up. All

60+ boys and staff stood on the School Houselawn at 08:30 saying risque tongue-twisters and

making distorted noises. It was quite enjoyable

and certainly helped get us ready for the day

    ahead.

    MICHAELMAS TERM DECEMBER 2014

    The House LibraryNoah Makower, U6th

This term has seen the belated start of a total revamping of the house library. For years

the more eclectic section of the library - positioned on the stairs down to the basement, has been fed by books left around the house and donated (dumped) by members of the

Upper 6th nearing their final days at the college. This system though proving successful

in terms of sheer quantity has caused the growth of an alarming clot of Jeffrey Archer

novels, all of which have now gone. The many charity and antique shops in and around

Kemptown proved very useful and moreover cheap in providing replacement and near

twenty books have been added so far.

Newly added titles which are particularly recommended include the

first two instalments of Anthony Powells Dance to the Music of

Time. Though long, it is a superb examination of the shifts

in manner, class and attitude that characterised the

    20th Century. Super-Cannes by J.G.Ballard is also

recommended; the dark underbelly of a

dormant society in which there is no poverty,

material pursuits rule all and no one is

expected to do anything is gradually exposed by

Ballards silken prose and effortless mastery of the

eeriness inherent to modernity. A Handful of Dust by Evelyn

Waugh, apart from simply being a jewel of 1920s social criticism

(and worryingly close to literary perfection) is also the best work of one of

the greatest ever English writers. Waugh deals hammer-blows with the flick of

the wrist making reading Handful of Dust difficult but entirely worthwhile. Other fiction

titles include the lighter side of the chattering classes activities, Much Obliged, Jeeves,

and The Child in Time and Atonement by Ian McEwan. Interesting non-fiction titles that

have been added include two volumes of Schotts Almanac (compendiums of the vital

facts, figures and events of any given year), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Places and a

    very heavy volume on poker.

Step aside Alfie Lawrence, theres a new dance talent in the

house. Oscar Davison is in the London Childrens Ballet

and he was part of a performance earlier this term at the

West End Peacock Theatre. He is also a drama scholar

and the only dance scholar in our house but we hope hes

the first of many. Oscar can often be found at PineappleStudios of a weekend, and were hoping his smooth

moves will rub off on the rest of the house at some point!

    U14s

As new boys to a college there was a lot of

pressure to keep up with the reputation of the

school and of course there will always be

pressure to perform. Yet these pressures are

offset by unfamiliarity and organisation. So it took

a little time for the teams to settle and for the

    performances to improve.

Losing the first two games of the season against

Cranleigh and Hurst was disappointing for the

As. However in the 8 following games momentum

built game by game, and the quality of the rugby

soared. Narrow losses against Dulwich and John

Fisher aside, the team found their feet as greater

organisation, fitness and skills developed. The

highlight was putting 50 points on Trinity whilst

playing on the Home Ground. The Bs team got off to a better start winning all

three of their first games before coming up

against strong sides from Eton and Dulwich ( yes

    - them again).

Then just when both teams seemed to have hit

their straps they were narrowly defeated by

sides from John Fisher. These results were

quickly forgotten following the fixtures at

Eastbourne. This proved to be a day to

remember as all U14 teams representing the

school won. Brighton as a whole scored over 500

points and conceded just 20. The best is yet to

    come.

    U14 As played 12, won 8.

    U15

The U15s have built on their strong

performance last year and the As

are rapidly developing into one of

the finest teams in the country at

their age group. An early season

    tournament at King Edward VI

    school in Southampton showed

their class where they ran up

    almost 150 points without

conceding a single try. More wins

    followed with some dazzling back

    play and victories against the

    perennially strong Dulwich and

    John Fisher sides.

The As have been well supported

by the Bs who have shown great

passion and maturity winning 8 of

their 11 matches with 3 narrow

    losses.

With the As undefeated in round 6

of the Natwest Cup this team has

    real potential.

    U15s As - played 19, won 17.

    U15s Bs played 11, won 8.

Whilst every boy who is playing in a team sport deserves congratulations for

putting their body on the line every Saturday, special mention must be made

to several boys whose contribution has made a significant difference to the

    score line.

The 1st XV have been represented by Toby Harries (U5th) and Elliot Hall

(U6th). Both these School House boys have utilised their speed on the pitchto score well worked tries. With only a few games left to play, the upcoming

VII's season for Brighton College looks promising.

Dan Kovalenko (L6th) has been a part of an undefeated 2nd XV this season.

As a second rower he has packed the scrum against powerhouses in the form

Dulwich, Eton and Trinity to come up victorious. The most significant win was

against Eastbourne with a result of 65-3.

The 3rd XV have a strong School House contingent with Alfie Laurence, Kei Yu

Lin, Sasha T and Yan S. The 3rd's have won 10 out of 12 of their games beating

Dulwich, Trinity and Hurstpierpoint to name a few.

Myles Burrows (U5th) has contributed to the success of the U16A's as scrum

half for the team. His efforts are greatly appreciated and we wish him luck

with his rugby for his next two years at the school.

It has been a great first term for me as the Tron of School

House and I have relished the opportunity to get to know

the boys better. I now know who the messiest and most

disorganised boys are (no naming and shaming!) butmore importantly those who show true commitment to the

house in all that they do. The 4thform has been absolutely

fantastic. They have slotted in with ease and have formed

strong bonds not only with each other but with the older

boys too. The L5th have been the most reliable group to

show up on time at our daily lunchtime roll call session,

highly commendable given how haphazard some of them

are! The U5th are a wonderfully sociable bunch and I

always enjoy their company in my office when they drop in

for a chat. The L6th of largely full boarders, representing sixnationalities is rather like the School House mafia, not to be messed

with! Some (not all) are notoriously erratic with their timekeeping- what they get up to,

nobody knows As for the U6, an eclectic mix of personalities; quirky, charming,

charismatic and diligent are just a few words I would use to describe the leaders of our

    house.

Thank you all for being such great fun. Have a relaxing holiday, a Merry Christmas and a
