Boardroom Advisory can bring in the brightest and the best, for just one meeting, a one-on-one discussion, or a series of meetings, to deal with the issues directly. Our Boardroom Advisers have the experience and recognition to give you unbiased peer-to-peer insight and advice without the long-term commitments typical with consultancies or the hiring of a non-executive director.

Coping with the current volatile economic, political and digital climate; Brexit, China and US trade relations, and the issues of data and cyber security, requires great leadership, new perspectives, new skills and uncomfortable conversations. Leadership teams have a lot to keep them awake at night. There is so much rapid change taking place and there are many new questions to ask, often with difficult solutions. With expert advice from our global LSB team, we can help you identify the right person for your needs.

WHAT ARE THE ISSUES KEEPING CEOS AWAKE AT NIGHT? The issues each business face vary tremendously, however through our network and studies of the business press, we have identified some broad and recurring themes.

The Global Situation• Global political uncertainty and trade - what you need to understand

better. • Terrorism and what you should be thinking about for your own

organisation.• Climate change and sustainability - a perspective on what is significant

and what you should be doing.

Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz was Minister of International Trade and Industry for 21 years from 1987-2008. Dubbed the ‘Iron Lady’, few people in Southeast Asia know more about global trade and industry. During her tenure, she has contributed significantly to the development of the country’s economy. Rafidah worked tirelessly to position and to

promote Malaysia as the most favoured destination for foreign direct investment. Many well-known global companies have set up manufacturing and related activities in Malaysia, establishing research and development facilities, as well as regional production and export hubs.

Rafidah now serves as the Chairman of AirAsia X, Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios and Megasteel and as an Adviser to the Sarawak Government on the Renewable Energy Corridor. She is well known for developing the communication and electronics industry. Under her leadership multi-national corporations such as Intel, Western Digital, Panasonic and Samsung set up manufacturing, research and development facilities in Malaysia. Malaysia has now become the 20th largest trading nation globally and the world’s largest exporter of semiconductors.

Rafidah is a source of inspiration for many entrepreneurs and small-medium enterprises. Quick, articulate and infinitely experienced, she encourages people to look beyond the product or service they sell, and consider macroeconomic factors, social influences and cultural norms. Many have benefited from her visionary outlook, ability to open opportunities and find new trading partners. Through her concerted efforts and passion in promoting Malaysia’s trade, many businesses have emerged from small-medium enterprises to large corporations with offices in the international market. She is much respected by her peers, and her candour is a breath of fresh air in the political arena.

Dr. Marijn Dekkers is one of Europe’s outstanding global business leaders. He was appointed Chairman of Unilever in 2016, after an extremely successful time as CEO of Bayer AG. Previously he served as CEO of Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. He is also Founder and Chairman of Novalis LifeSciences LLC, an investment and advisory

firm for the Life Science industry.

At Bayer, from 2010-2016, Dekkers started a major transformation program by revamping its innovation capability and changing the culture from a large old fashioned German chemical company into a highly innovative and more nimble Life Science company. This led to a stream of successful new product introductions which catapulted Bayer, for the first time in its history, to the number one most valuable company in the DAX. Dekkers earned a reputation for being bold and received numerous awards and accolades, including “most innovative international CEO”, “Manager of the Year” and “Business Person of the Year”.

At Thermo Fisher Scientific, he implemented a complete corporate reorganisation. Then as CEO from 2002, he strengthened the company’s core businesses by driving an innovation model supplemented by a number of acquisitions. This allowed the company to be a full solution provider to its customers and become the leading supplier of analytical instrumentation and consumables to the Life Science industry. Under his leadership, the market value of the company increased tenfold.

After his retirement from Bayer, Dekkers joined Unilever as chairman in 2016. Unilever is a leading consumer goods company whose products are used daily by 2.5 billion people around the world. Dekkers is helping the Board of Directors to keep the focus on what local consumers want and ensuring Unilever’s tremendous product range remains relevant and meaningful in people’s lives.

Lord Hogan-Howe’s stellar career began in 1979 when he joined the South Yorkshire Police Force. He became the most senior police officer in the UK, leading an organisation of nearly 50,000 people with a budget of £3.2billion. He is a world authority on planning and leading through internal and external crisis. His experience and insight into how to approach, motivate

and learn through crisis is helpful to organisations across all industries and cultures.

Upon his appointment as Commissioner for the Metropolitan Police in 2011, London, with a population of 8.4 million people, was still reeling from large scale rioting. At the same time, the Met police had lost half of the Management Board and £600 million from its budget. Hogan-Howe and his team motivated the police force, restored confidence to the community and delivered the London 2012 Olympic Games without incident.

Like many operating models that have evolved through time, traditional “ways of working” permeate the police force. Acknowledging and confronting new challenges that require a more innovative approach has been a feature of Hogan-Howe’s career. For example, faced with the rising level of fraud, data theft and other cybercrime, Hogan-Howe launched a unit in 2014 dedicated to countering online crime in London. Building new “fit for purpose” policing strategies and methods has transformed the ability to win against this new age crime.

In November 2017 Hogan-Howe was made a Life Peer, taking the title Lord Hogan-Howe of Sheffield in the County of South Yorkshire.

Hogan-Howe’s leadership skills and experiences are atypical of most large organisations. The police force is an organisation characterised by challenge. Hogan-Howe and his team were constantly looking for new strategies to promote diversity, counter prejudice and train people from all walks of life to assimilate and build relations with an often hostile audience. In a multicultural world, Hogan-Howe’s insight into workforce challenges is critical.

KEY AREAS FOR BOARDS • Leadership through crisis • Attracting, training and managing a diverse workforce• Learning powerful communication skills• Re-building communities besieged by crisis

Idris’ exemplary business and leadership skills were developed in his 23 years at Shell where he rose to become Vice President of Shell Retail International and Vice President Business Development Consultancy, based in the UK. In 2005, he was appointed as CEO of Malaysia Airlines to deal with their losses. He announced the airline’s business turnaround plan from a 9 month loss of US$400 million in 2005 to achieving a record profit of US$260 million in 2007. He is President of the IRC, a New York-based NGO with 25,000 staff in 40 countries suffering from war and disaster, and its consequences, around the world.

He brings an unusual combination of Transatlantic networks, diplomatic experience and practical leadership to this analysis of the world’s mega-trends, how they pose risks for economics and politics, and the right way to respond to promote stability and security as well as fairness and equity.

With governments in retreat, his thesis about the responsibility of the corporate and social sector to step up, and step up together, is more and more relevant. His emphasis on corporate social results, not just corporate social responsibility, is challenging and inspiring.

Sir Ivan Rogers is a former senior British civil servant, who was the Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the European Union from 2013-17. No one is better versed than Rogers in the complexities of Brexit, from both the point of view of the UK as well as the other 27 member states.

Rogers began his Whitehall career at the Treasury. He served as private secretary to Tony Blair during his time as Prime Minister, as well as Blair’s Director of EU Policy and Strategy. Rogers was also secretary to Kenneth Clarke, the former Chancellor, as well as Chief of Staff to the former EU Commissioner Sir Leon Brittan.

As one of the world’s leading authorities on the EU, Rogers is uniquely placed to help organisations cut through the rhetoric that surrounds Brexit. He came to the attention of the public by resigning when Prime Minister May triggered Article 50 because he was frustrated at those “afraid to speak the truth to those in power”. Business leaders need his unique and uncensored insight into what is really happening, what governments around the EU are really thinking and what businesses need to be aware of.

Rogers has built up incomparable contacts in the EU over the past 25 years, and is widely respected as Britain’s most experienced European negotiator. His expertise on government policy and its impact on international trade agreements is unparalleled. Rogers is an ideal sounding board and adviser for business leaders wanting to maintain and grow their UK and European market opportunities.

Roubini’s opinion is sought after by business, industry and political leaders needing to navigate and plan

around current and future economic policy. The IMF, the World Bank and numerous other prominent public and private institutions all draw upon his advice and expertise. He is a regular speaker at the World Economic Forum in Davos and the Global Citizen’s Forum.

Roubini has expert knowledge and insight into policies that might disrupt supply chains, upset currency valuations and restrict trade and foreign direct investment. With future growth ambitions tied to the U.S., Europe, China and the developing markets, Roubini’s insights on what we need to look out for are invaluable.
