BOARD OF EDUCATION OF THE SPECIAL SERVICES SCHOOL DISTRICT AND THE INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY OF THE COUNTY OF BURLINGTON
REGULAR MEETING The Regular Meeting of the Board of Education of the Special Services School District and The Institute of Technology of The County of Burlington was held on Thursday evening, January 28, 2016, at the Rutgers Media Center, 2 Academy Dr., Westampton, NJ. Committee Meeting: Presentations: Todd Bonsall, Assistant Superintendent of Curr/Inst., introduced Joan Barbagiovanni, Principal of the BCSSSD Alternative High School and Bobbi Downs, Principal of the BCSSSD Alternative Middle School, who stated the school received an Honorable mention for “School of Character Award.” They also handed out information on the school's attendance rate, Mission, FAQ, Teen Dating Violence Information Session, etc. Susan MacDonald, BCITMedford, introduced the National Honor Society Students who showed a video that they won first place out of 78 entries, which featured their Principal, Mike Parker. Helen Scherer, BCSSSD presented a poster board “Creativity through Computers” from the Graphic Arts Design. James Brand, BCSSSD stated the School to Work students have worked since September over 5,000 hours earning $42,000. Dr. Manno, Superintendent reviewed the BCIT/BCSSSD newsletters stating 100% Dental Asst students passed the state test, BCIT Discovery Night is on February 23, 2016, BCIT Summer Camps will be accepting enrollments, BCSSSD Teacher Assistant Patricia Niehaus received State of NJ Teacher Assistant. Board Meeting: The Board meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. by President Robert Silcox, followed by the flag salute. Theresa Margiotta, Board Secretary, stated that this meeting was in accordance with the Open Public Meeting Act and that this was a public meeting. Public Comments: Holly VanLaarhoven, BCITMedford Student, read a statement requesting that the Board of Education reconsider the Transfer of the Teacher Assistant in the Veterinary Career Major Shop. Roberta Schultz, BCIT Parent, discussed her concerns over the investigation of an incident that occurred on the school bus on December 3, 2015 regarding her son being hit with a book. Her concerns were with the closing of the investigation and what type of investigation occurred. Dr. Manno stated that he would meet with her after the meeting to get her contact information and give her more directives according to our policies. If she was not satisfied after following the procedures her next step is to meet with the Superintendent of Schools. Board Comments: John Ferry: Apologized for being late. Stated over 20 years ago he attended BCIT Adult Education courses and thanked teachers for all they have done. Leon Jones: Thanked everyone, especially the National Honor Society students who did a great job on their video. Paula Lee: Glad to see everyone and thanked them for all they do. President Silcox: Great presentation, proud of the direction we are going, we have made great strides, thank you for all your work.
