ear Friends,What a year 2011-2012 was! After three years of planning, in January 2012 we launched a year of celebration for our 100th

Anniversary. We hope you have received our special edition “Year in Review” newsletter which chronicled each month of our centennial year.The 100th Anniversary highlights how much we have to be thankful for this fiscal year. Here are a few highlights:Our programs remain second to none. Our whole-child approach, which includes quality standards that promote social, emotional and

cognitive development, ensures that our children are prepared for life as well as school. We are humbled by the realization of how many thousands of little ones have passed through our doors, leaving far better prepared for life than children who did not have the same opportunities. (Please see page 4 for a full description of our programs.)Our teaching staff completed workshops, special trainings, and participated in community outreach activities, working alongside

board members to promote LBDN’s programs. Our professional development commitment is just one of the ways we strive to provide a workplace environment that fosters motivated and satisfied individuals, promotes personal and professional growth, and ensures the best learning experiences for our children.Our 2011-2012 campaign for our Stepping Stones to Success Scholarship Program raised close to $100,000 in a drive led by Mayor Bob

and Nancy Foster. “We were very happy to do it,” Nancy Foster told attendees at a reception honoring the Fosters and acknowledging all donors to the campaign. “Anything that helps children is very important to me,” she added. We closed the books this past fiscal year in a strong position (see page 9). We find ourselves in good financial health due to the gener-

osity of many special 100th Anniversary Investors who raised the fundraising bar this year, as well as to the senior staff’s strategic appli-cation of sustainability principles, thoughtful planning, and conservative fiscal management.We have a wonderful board of directors with both commitment and vision for the future and a staff of dedicated professionals with

tremendous love for the children who enter our doors. We are proud of our history and heritage of service to Greater Long Beach, and cherish the support of our long-time friends like you.

Stepping Stones to Success Scholarship Campaign One of the Best!e’d like to THANK and CONGRATULATE our 2011-2012 Stepping Stones to Success co-chairs, Nancy and Bob Foster for their invaluable role in helping us raise close to $100,000. The Stepping Stones campaign was just the latest activity in a long history of the Nursery receiving Nancy and Bob’s support.

These funds will help to pay for student fees for families who might not otherwise be able to afford the quality care offered at the Nursery. A big thanks to Nancy and Bob and to all of our wonderful Stepping Stones contributors.

or more than a century, LBDN has graduated young children who, upon entering kindergarten, were well prepared to take full advan-tage of their school experience. Today, LBDN serves approximately 330 children annually, ages 6 weeks to 6 years. As a part of our commitment to follow best practices in the early childhood education field, we have developed specialized educational components

that allow us to better meet the specific needs of our children, families, and teachers. These programs include:

LBDN Programs Encourage Personal Growth and Development

FLBDN Programs Encourage Personal Growth and Development

Early Intervention Program (EIP):When developmental or behavioral issues are identified, LBDN’s

groundbreaking EIP facilitates an intervention response that involves our teachers, our consulting child psychologist and the family. On-site intervention specialists coordinate all EIP activities to ensure an integrated and holistic approach.

"Ready to Read" Early Literacy:The Ready to Read curriculum, beginning with even the very

youngest infants (6 weeks old), consists of at least two focused hours of activities each day in every classroom that integrate science, language arts, art, drama, story-telling, song time, puzzle play, dramatic play, and other activities that focus not only on language and literacy enhancement, but also on development of the children’s large and small motor skills. Literacy and language development activities are integrated in play activities throughout the day as well.

Math:Math is integrated informally throughout the day as children are

playing and doing everyday activities, such as cooking and sand/water play, as well as during more routine times such as lining up to go outside or serving themselves lunch. Math is also incorpo-rated more formally through activities that provide opportunities for children to sort objects according to attributes, create pat-terns, or graph their classmates’ responses to questions such as “what is your favorite color?”

Healthy Connections:Recognizing the important role early health services can play in a

child’s life, LBDN offers a range of services including screenings (hearing, vision, dental), parent workshops on health and nutrition issues, classroom health-related presentations designed for chil-dren and, weather permitting, daily outdoor play. LBDN is also committed to ongoing improvement in our nutrition program; our meals exceed USDA standards and are aligned with the recom-mendations of American Academy of Pediatrics.

Parent Engagement:We host regular workshops that teach parents about child devel-

opment, provide them with appropriate parenting techniques and educate them about the importance of their involvement with their children’s education. In addition, we have biannual parent/teacher conferences (more frequently, if needed) to be sure our parents are up-to-date on the status of the child’s development. We use evaluation and assessment tools designed to be used by parents and, which has allowed teachers to more objectively deal with parental concerns and has more effectively engaged parents in any necessary intervention strategies. Each site also has an active Parent Advisory Committee that gives parents the opportu-nity to get to know each other, support the Nursery with small fundraisers, and provide input on issues relating to their children.
