As mentioned at our February Board meeting, the Master Board had a meeting with our attorney to discuss an offer that has been made on the property that Mainlands jointly owns, that is in front of Tons of Tile. We have been looking for an alternative location for our Mainlands Management Office that would enable us to own the land and building. The current location has been rented for far too long, and we have spent well over $ 1 million with nothing to show for it. The attorney outlined what steps each Unit will need to take in order to facilitate the sale (and subsequent purchase). This will require resident approval, and we hope to have something for your review and action within the next 30 – 45 days. Neither the sales contract nor the specifics for resident voting have been nailed down yet, so there is limited information to share. As things crystallize, your Board will provide more detailed information. We thank you, as always, for your interest and support. For those of you who missed the meeting, the Board ap-proved the funds to refinish the swimming pool. The time frame for this extensive project has yet to be determined, but we will provide our residents with as much notice as possible. We will also try to arrange for pool sharing with other Mainlands Units during the pool closure. We have also approved hiring a consulting firm to provide a Reserve Study. This will provide a number of benefits to Unit Five: a current inventory of existing fixed assets in Unit Five, including an estimate of remaining useful life and replace-ment cost; an assessment of where our reserves are in relation to anticipated future capital requirements. Unit Five has been very fortunate in having previous Boards taking a financially prudent approach to this issue. It has enabled us to undertake a number of projects – shuffle-board revitalization, sodding of lawns, Burma Ditch improvement, etc. – without needing to consider special assessments to pay for these improvements. continued from front page

With looming issues on sidewalks, the erosion on the lake between Units Five and Seven, Clubhouse updating and other projects, it is more imperative than other to insure our financial strength. I would encourage our residents to walk around Unit Five. The care and concern that our residents are showing for their environment – for the most part – is a very positive sight to see. It reinforces the positive aesthetic of Unit Five as well as helps maintain and elevate property values. A big thank you to all of the residents who remember to fill out and get approval for an Alteration Request, before pro-ceeding with any external work. Forms are available in the Clubhouse and the Management Office. If you are one of the few people not yet critical of the new stop sign placed at the corner of Mainlands Boulevard and 45th Street, you need to get a move on. At the February Board meeting, our Board approved the installation of a three-way stop sign set up at the corner of Mainlands and Mainlands by our Clubhouse. The next step in this process is to present it to the Master Board – probably at the March 3rd (tentative) meeting. If approved, it will replace (hopefully) the new stop sign at 45th. We are still looking for ways to enhance the safety of all Mainlands residents, both walking and driving (and biking, running and rollerblading, too). The curvature of the Boulevard, in conjunction with cars parked in driveways at the corner of inter-secting streets, can make turning onto Mainlands Boulevard an adventure worthy of a Disney World ride. For those of you who were unaware, we did have a pedes-trian struck by a car making a right turn from Mainlands heading towards Unit Six. This occurred this past October. Fortunately, Bruce is now able to walk the Boule-vard again.

Thank you for reading your Five’s Forum!

BEAR CREATIONS Kathy Bortscheller

Bear Creations has been a successful venture taken on by Unit Five. We create dressed bears for Cancer patients at St. Anthony Hospital in St. Petersburg. We supply them with bears every month, all year long. We also will give cancer bears to anyone in Mainlands, friends, or rela-tives that need a bear. Just give me a call.

BEAR CREATIONS will meet on March 23rd, (4th Monday in March). We will be tracing patterns and stuffing bears.

Thank you to all the volunteers who make this project a success! Any ques-tions call me at 217-9217.

PANCAKE BREAKFAST Larry Bassett

Our breakfast Saturday, Feb.15th, was non-stop cooking and serving. Unit Five’s volunteers worked

hard and served over 200 meals. As I stated last month, the “birds of snow” are here and obviously hungry for our pancakes.

Our next breakfast is scheduled for Sat-urday, March 21st. (Maybe we can have some green pancakes in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, you never know LOL).

Thanks to all who worked and enjoyed our efforts.

YOGA Kathy Bortscheller

There will be a Yoga class every Wednesday at the clubhouse from 2-3 pm. A mat and a blanket to roll up will be helpful for the exercising. We work on reducing stress levels, balance within our bodies, and slow movements. It really is a good workout, and not strenuous. A donation may be made, but there is no charge for the class.

Any questions call me at 217-9217.

SHUFFLEBOARD Pat Fabisiak

As of this writing we have four more games to play. Where did the time go? At the end of our season we will have a tour-nament at Pinellas Park Senior Center, scheduled for March 24 and 26. We play singles and doubles.

I truly appreciate all the help from our Unit Five Shuffleboard Team which makes my job easier. Special thanks to: Shirley and Wayne Wheeler, John Seward, James Fuentes, Mary Allmeyer, Mike Tehonica, Carol Zaborowski and JoAnn Fabrizio.

We will continue our practices on Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:00am until further notice.

May the luck of the Irish be with you all. Happy St. Patrick's Day!

WOMEN’S CLUB Leeanne Penick

On February 14, Valentine’s Day, the Unit Five Women’s Club were educated about the benefits of the cannabis and hemp plant to promote healthy liv-ing. Collette Florida, our speaker, talked to us about her vision “that everyone will have access to quality hemp infused products for the active adult and senior population”. We appreciate her candid comments on this controversial sub-ject. As usual “the lunch ladies” pre-pared for us an excellent lunch of chicken enchiladas, tossed salad, and brownies (no marijuana in the brownies).

Next month on Friday, March 13, the Club will be educated by a speaker from Memorial Gardens. The subject will be “Making preparations for the passing of a loved one.” They promised the in-formation would be enlightening, and not depressing. Besides, this is information all of us should know. Olive Garden will cater our lunch. See you soon!

PLATINUM BABES Judy Pustizzi

On Wednesday, March 18, 2020 our ladies will be enjoying lunch at Lanna Thai at 4871 Park Street N, St. Pete, at 11:30. Please join us for fellowship & hopefully good food. We try to get together every 3rd Wednesday, but holidays and restau-rant schedules may cause some date changes. Sign up sheets are on the bulle-tin board. Contact Co-Chairs: Priscilla Skalka 727 803 6728, or Judy Pustizzi 727 914 6288, for additional information or ride needs. Please sign up early.

Two men were sitting next to each other at a bar. After a while, one guy looks at the other and says, “I can’t help but think, from listening to you, that you’re from Ireland.” The other guy responds proudly, “Yes, that I am!”, The first guy says, “So am I! And where abouts from Ireland might you be?” The guy answers, “I’m from Dublin, I am.” The first guy responds, “Sure and begora, and so am I! And what street did you live on in Dublin?” The other guy says, “A lovely little area it was, I lived on McCleary Street in the old central part of town.” The first guy says, “It’s a small world, so did I! And to what school would you have been going?” The other guy answers, “Well now, I went to St. Mary’s of course.” The first guy gets really excited, and says, “And so did I. Tell me, what year did you graduate?” The other guy an-swers, “Well, now, I graduated in 1964.” The first guy exclaims, “The Good Lord must be smiling down upon us! I can hardly believe our good luck at winding up in the same bar tonight. Can you believe it, I graduated from St. Mary’s in 1964 my own self.” About this time, another guy walks into the bar, sits down, and orders a beer. The bar-tender walks over shaking his head & mutters, “It’s going to be a long night tonight.” The guy asks, “Why do you say that?”

“The Murphy twins are drunk again.”
