Counselor
I teach perseverance to mean: keep trying, do your best and to never give up. Many students in Eastern take that to heart but if I had to choose only one student who exemplifies the character trait of perseverance, it would be Amani Smallwood.
Amani is in kindergarten. When she first entered Eastern, she was very quiet and kept to herself. She struggled in learning her sounds but she was always ready to do her best. She worked hard every day and never gave up or complained. Although, it was difficult for her, Amani kept working, even putting in extra practice with me. Today I am proud to say that due to her perseverance Amani is on grade level and continues to do her best in her classroom.
Michelle Rocha
Presented By Chris Hill, PE Teacher
Michelle has shown an incredible display of perseverance since the first day of class. Although she was born without one limb, she does not allow that to slow her down or hinder her attempts at any task given to her or her peers. From sit ups, push-ups, pull ups or flex arm hangs, to shooting a basketball, or any other activity, she has a “no quit” attitude about everything she faces. It is extremely refreshing to see a young person with such determination & perseverance. All too often, I have students looking for ways out of exercising. Michelle looks for ways to modify a task to make it work for her. To see her try makes me a believer in her abilities & understand that she doesn’t look for a way out, she is a doer! I am so proud of her on a daily basis. Her classmates recognize that she could use it as an excuse to not do something, however she is a champion in every sense of the word!

Jeremiah Johnson
Presented By Kathy Clark, Teacher
Jeremiah Johnson is my nominee for the Character Education Award for Perseverance. Jeremiah is in his second Microsoft IT Academy course. He was the first student to earn Excel Expert certification this semester. While he was able to easily achieve the certifications for the Word 2010 and Excel 2010, the expert-level
exams in Word 2010 and Excel 2010 required that he review areas of weakness and retest. Because of his perseverance, he was able to achieve the expert-level certifications after retesting. He was the first student this semester (and only the second in the history of SHS) to earn the Master Office Specialist certification.
